Description
東京 (Tokyo): 風俗絵卷図画刊行会 (Fuzoku Emaki Gazu Kankokai), 1916. Limited edition. Softcover. g+ to vg+. Large quartos. Unpaginated. String-bound decorative black paper wrappers, with blue-green deocrative illustrations of trees on the covers. White silk labels on the front covers. Finely printed in color woodblock prints, this limited edition, reproduces the content (both images and text) of the original Moko Shurai Ekotoba hand scrolls. These historic scrolls were painted on the comission of the samurai Takezaki Suenaga (竹崎 季長, 1246–1314), by an unknown artist, to commemorate the defeat of the Mongol army during their two attempted invasions of Japan, in 1274 and 1281. Among the recounting of these contemporary events, the images depict in striking detailed views and bright colors, the heroics of the Japanese warriors and Suenaga in particular. The images at the end of the final volume seem to depict the famous typhoons, which wiped out the Mongol fleet in both the first and second invasions, called "kamikaze" (divine wind), the origin of the now infamous term. The final leaf of the shows a detailed map. The volumes were edited by the Japanes artist and printmaker Beisen Kubota (1874-1937). Text in Japanese. Wrappers with some light rubbing to extremities, and some minor to light scratches to the covers. Labels with some light smudges and/or water staining. Some stains to the edges of book blocks. Interiors with some sporadic minor to light water stains and smudges. Images mostly unaffaected, still relativly clean and bright. Wrappers in good+ very good-, interiors in very good- to very good+.
