Description
1930. Signed. REAGAN, Ronald. Eureka College Yearbooks. Eureka, Illinois: Junior Class, 1930-31. Two volumes. Quarto, original pattern blue and burgundy cloth, silver motifs to front boards. $12,500.A pair of yearbooks from Eureka College for 1930 and 1931, featuring images of and commentary on a young Ronald Reagan, inscribed by him in the 1931 book next to a picture of him with the football team, ""Best of luck & success to the Roommate. Remembering the stock of glassware. Yours in the bond, 'Dutch.'""The Prism was the name of Eureka's class yearbook, with these two issues covering Reagan's freshman and sophomore year. Reagan has signed the navy 1931 issue on page 67 beside an image of himself on the football team, reading: ""Best of luck & success to the Roommate. Remembering the stock of glassware. Yours in the bond, 'Dutch.'"" Beneath the image, the page reads, ""Reagan advanced from last year's second squad to the first team this year. He never gives up when the odds are against him. 'Dutch' made his letter easily this season and should be a mainstay next year."" There are several other images of Reagan throughout the 1931 issue, on pages 45 (class photo), 89 (Tau Kappa Epsilon portrait), 114 (in a play ""The Dover Road""), 118 (on The Prism staff as part of the Features team), and 139 (a Tau Kappa Epsilon group photo). It is fitting that there is a photograph of Reagan as a football player and acting in a play, as he would go on to work as a sports announcer and a Hollywood actor soon after graduation. The burgundy colored 1930 issue of The Prism also features the freshman Reagan, on pages 51 (class photo) and 63 (on the football team). The freshman footballer is described: ""Although 'Dutch' failed to get much competition this season, he has the determination and fight which will finally win out, if he sticks to football throughout his college career. He was shifted about on the second string from end to tackle, doing his best wherever he was put. Another thing to Reagan's credit is that he was regular at all practices, a thing which is pleasing to any coach."" Owner signatures. With commencement program laid into 1930 volume. In addition to Reagan's inscription, the 1931 volume contains many other inscriptions from Reagan's college classmates. Both have expected wear from use and shelf wear, with bumped corners and spine edges. Light soiling and scratching to the covers. Minor toning and soiling to internal pages. Boldly signed by Reagan.

Description
France: np, 1480. First edition. Framed. Very Good. STUNNING FULL-PAGE MINIATURE OF SAINT BARNABAS FROM A 15TH-CENTURY BOOK OF HOURS. The full-page miniature on vellum, with fine detail and rich color, depicts the prophet dressed in a blue robe with a gold cape, (presumably) in the act of preaching with (as he is usually shown) a book cradled in his left hand. He stands before columns and arches revealing a mountainous landscape and blue sky in the distance. The image is framed by gold pillars and with “Sancte Barnaba” written in gold on a blue background in the base. Saint Barnabas, “son of consolation... stands first on the list of prophets and teachers of the church at Antioch” (Easton’s Bible Dictionary). The reverse, with one large two-line decorated initial, contains the end of the text dedicated to Saint Matthias, with the heading for Saint Barnabas. Judging from the style, the leaf appears to be from a French Book of Hours, c.1480. Beautifully matted and framed under UV-protecting museum glass. Leaf size: 4.25x5.75 in (108x148mm); framed: 11.25x13.25 in. “Sancte Barnaba” at the base partially obscured by smudge; a few very minor spots of soiling. A beautiful, colorful leaf with sharp detail in outstanding condition.

Description
Moss' Empress, Ltd.. No binding. About Fine. [London: Moss' Empress, Ltd., ca. 1950] Vintage original 10 x 15" (25 x 38 cm.) British theatre poster. Two punch holes near top of poster on either side of the word "MOSS", about fine. Show Boat Express was an all-male female impersonator/drag company revue which appeared at music halls in the UK. As a 1951-dated poster for a performance of the revue at the Tivoli Theatre has referenced, this poster is likely from about the same period. Headliners Bartlett & Ross and Ford & Sheen were well-established drag performers who had been at work in the UK since the 1930s. Ford & Sheen were a British double act of drag artists, popular in variety shows and pantomimes between the 1930s-70s. They met when Sheen joined the cast of the all-male revue Splinters, and in 1936 the pair decided to team up as female impersonators in variety shows. They quickly became successful as glamorous drag queens. According to writer Roy Busby, "their rather old-fashioned cross-talk act, perfectly timed and polished by constant repetition, [contrasted with] the brasher style of modern drag acts. In the old tradition, they [took] their bow at the finale as well-groomed males." They toured widely during the Second World War, and the years following, with shows such as Showboat Express, Forces in Skirts, and Misleading Ladies. Over the years they became best known for appearing in pantomimes as "ugly sisters", which they continued to do until the 1970s. (Wikipedia)

Description
1968. King Jr., Martin Luther. Conscience for Change published in 1968 presents a series of lectures delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Toronto during the final year of his life. The lectures form part of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Massey Lectures series and address several central political and moral questions of the late 1960s including the struggle for civil rights in the United States, the growing opposition to the Vietnam War, the role of youth activism, and the philosophy of nonviolent social transformation. Delivered in 1967 and published shortly before King's assassination in April 1968, the lectures provide insight into his evolving political thought during the later phase of the Civil Rights Movement. King Jr., Martin Luther. Conscience for Change: Massey Lectures, 1967. Toronto: CBC Publications, 1968. First edition, second printing. The volume contains five lectures originally broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in which King examines the moral foundations of nonviolent protest and the broader struggle for racial equality. The lectures also articulate King's increasingly public opposition to the Vietnam War and his criticism of arguments used to justify American military involvement. The text presents King's reflections on the responsibilities of younger generations within social movements and the ethical obligations of democratic societies confronting injustice. The Massey Lectures series brought prominent intellectual and political voices to Canadian audiences, and King's participation reflected the international significance of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. By the time these lectures were delivered, King had expanded his activism beyond the fight against segregation to include criticism of militarism and economic inequality. The publication therefore captures a late stage in King's intellectual development, when his public statements increasingly connected civil rights, peace activism, and global questions of social justice. Paperback volume measuring approximately 8 × 5 inches. 46 pages. Original printed wrappers. Light handling wear with a previous owner's name on the inside front cover. Very good condition overall and a concise printed record of King's late reflections on civil rights, war, and nonviolent change.

Description
1969. Archive of anti-Vietnam War organizing literature documenting systems of grassroots protest coordination, student mobilization, and peace coalition activism in Ohio between 1969 and 1971. The material documents how antiwar organizations, student groups, clergy, labor activists, and peace coalitions coordinated demonstrations, conferences, transportation logistics, and public outreach campaigns opposing United States military involvement in Vietnam. Produced during the peak years of mass antiwar protest, the archive reveals the operational mechanisms through which decentralized coalitions organized national moratoriums, strategy meetings, marches, and political education efforts linking opposition to the war with broader concerns regarding racial inequality, militarism, labor activism, and civil liberties. The material provides primary-source evidence for the study of antiwar movement infrastructure, protest communication networks, and coalition-building within the late 1960s and early 1970s American peace movement. Archive consists of three pieces of antiwar protest literature produced in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, including one broadside, one flyer, and one newspaper-format circular. [1] Vietnam Moratorium Committee / Ohio Peace Action Committee. "What Can You Do?" Columbus: [1969]. Mimeographed flyer promoting participation in the October 15 National Moratorium against the Vietnam War. The text encourages Americans to "devote the day to working for peace" and includes instructions for organizing demonstrations, educational events, and local participation. Directed in part toward students, the flyer urges readers not to be deterred by "dictatorial threats of low grades by a professor." Endorsers include Mayor John Lindsay, Senator Eugene McCarthy, and the United Auto Workers, illustrating the broad coalition supporting the moratorium movement. [2] Cleveland Area Peace Action Council. "Call to a National Anti-War Conference." Cleveland: [1970]. Printed circular announcing a July 4-5 strategy conference at Case Western Reserve University intended to "unify the anti-war movement." The text criticizes the Nixon administration's continuation and escalation of the war while emphasizing the disproportionate burden borne by Black communities and working-class Americans. The document is endorsed by more than twenty organizers including clergy, labor activists, GI counselors, and community organizers. [3] Cleveland Area Peace Action Coalition. "End the War, Stop the Bombing - April 22." Cleveland: [1970]. Illustrated protest flyer featuring a dramatic woodcut-style image of American bombers and advancing infantry. Produced in response to intensified U.S. bombing campaigns in Indochina, the text declares, "There is no moratorium on the daily killing of 300 Indochinese," and includes transportation details for Cleveland participants traveling to demonstrations in New York City. Together, these materials document the logistical and organizational dimensions of the antiwar movement beyond highly publicized national demonstrations, preserving evidence of the local coalition work required to sustain mass protest activity during the Vietnam War era. Particularly notable is the archive's emphasis on interconnected activism, linking opposition to the war with labor organizing, racial justice concerns, student activism, and critiques of state violence. The documents additionally illustrate the broad ideological range of antiwar coalitions during the Nixon years, encompassing students, trade unionists, religious leaders, veterans' advocates, and civil rights organizers. Minor handling wear, folds, and age toning consistent with use in activist distribution; overall very good condition. A concise but historically significant archive of grassroots antiwar organizing and protest infrastructure during the Vietnam War period.

Description
Wiesbaden: Fluxus, 1962. This copy purportedly belonging to Editorial Committee member Jackson Mac Low, with his pencil annotation to final page, adding Hadeishi Nobuyuki to the Japanese issue. Faint vertical crease to textured olive wrappers (as though folded for mailing); contents now loose from staples—nonetheless, a better than very good copy of a scarce document; with only single OCLC record located in North America (Princeton).. First Edition. Square octavo booklet (4 pages) published by George Maciunas to be distributed during the debut concert tour of Fluxus artists in Germany—featuring George Brecht, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, Nam June Paik, Benjamin Patterson, Emmett Williams, and Wolf Vostell. In addition to reproducing the dictionary definition of "flux" that famously inspired Maciunas towards the collective name—"a flowing or fluid discharge from the bowels..."—the booklet offers proposed tables of contents for seven regionally-themed Fluxus Yearboxes, including some surprise names (such as Theodor Adorno for the German & Scandinavian installment). This being the first state of the brochure, printed to orange sheets. (Silverman < 541.I, ff).

Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1931. First Edition. “1st edition” stated on the copyright page (the essential point) and reprints without “1st edition” stated are frequently offered as 1st editions. Former owner’s inscription to the endpaper, and a bookplate, else fine in a dustjacket, that is unclipped but with no printed price (as issued), the red on the spine faded to yellow, else very good, an agonizingly scarce 1st edition in a dustjacket. George Washington had his spies during the Revolution, among them Enoch Crosby. And Abraham Lincoln had his spies during the Civil War, led by Allan Pinkerton. But, in 1917, it was Herbert Yardley who showed President Wilson that American military codes were easy to break, and Wilson allowed him to build a modern organization of cryptographers and secret agents in New York, veiled and officially detached from the government, and to recruit 165 men and women to work it (mathematicians, crossword puzzle paladins, linguists, chess masters, archeologists, chemists, interpreters, etc.). The Navy called it MI–8. Yardley’s team called it The Black Chamber, and, beyond breaking codes, they captured foreign spies, dispatched pretty women to seduce the men of adversary governments out of their secrets, broke into safes, forged diplomatic seals, and their chemists made, among other things, invisible ink visible. In 1921 they broke the Japanese diplomatic code and read the dispatches sent to Japanese officials at the Naval Conference that settled fleet size after WWI. In the 1920s The Black Chamber reached its peak of skill, inventiveness, ingenuity, and success, but in 1929 Herbert Hoover’s Secretary of State (Henry Stimson) closed them down saying, “Gentlemen do not read each other’s mail” (what an idiot). Yardley, out of a job and, because The Black Chamber was not official, he didn’t have a pension. He examined the laws surrounding state secrets and determined that he could write a book on code breaking generally, and could reference his bureau and their cases, and be pretty indiscrete about it, if he was careful about a few names and some specifics. This is his book. It caused 19 nations to change their codes. In 1933 Franklin Roosevelt became President and his Government wrote a new espionage act to prevent another book like this one, then resurrected the cypher bureau under William Friedman, and when the U. S. entered W. W. II, set them up at Arlington Hall. In a great success, Genevieve Grotjan cracked the Japanese military code. In a great failure the U. S. got manipulated by Russians imbedded in The Manhattan Project. But once the war was over, Friedman sliced up Soviet espionage in the cold war with Venona and Boris. In 1952 the bureau was folded into the N. S. A. My wife told me that our phones were spying on us. “Nonsense” she said. She laughed. I laughed. Siri laughed. Alexa laughed.
