Description
N.P.: Reproduction Section First Marine Division, 1945. Good -. 6” x 4”. Stapled wrappers. Pp. 25. Good minus: lacking rear wrapper, front wrapper heavily worn and soiled. This is a densely packed little guidebook to North China, issued to Marines entering the country around September 1945. The purpose of the book is contained in a brief note from the First Marine Division's Commanding Officer, Major General D. Peck: “We are entering China. This small booklet is issued to you in order that you may know a few facts about the country, and the region where we will be stationed. Read it carefully. Keep in mind that the U.S. Marine Corps for nearly 100 years has earned and enjoyed a good reputation with the Chinese. Your country and your corps are proud of that reputation. The uniform we wear is respected. Let us increase that respect by exemplary conduct and actions in keeping with Marine tradition.” The book has 16 illustrations and a brief history of China and China-U.S. relations. There's a seven-page phrase list and 24 short discussions on topics such as hiring a rickshaw, food, and the dangers of opium. OCLC locates three copies.
