Description
New York: Published by the Author, 1865. FIRST EDITION. With 27 fine hand-colored lithographic mounted on guards, all by C.F. Tholey after Elliot and J. Wolf with the exception of 2 hand-colored plates of eggs after W.S. Morgan, all printed by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia. Contemporary half green morocco, edges and corners worn; interior excellent. First edition of one of the most important ornithological works printed in America. “Next only to Audubon’s, the Elliot works are the most valuable American bird plates” (Bennett). This second of Elliot’s three works printed in the United States focuses on the then-known species of grouse, who mostly inhabit temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern hemisphere. The text includes synonyms, data on the geographical distribution and the habits of the birds, and descriptions of their different plumage. Elliot’s later works were printed in Europe, though some retained a New York imprint. Elliot (1835-1915) was a founder of both the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the American Ornithologist Union. He was a curator of z oology at the Field Museum in Chicago. Anker/Copenhagen, 128; Ayer/Zimmer, p. 205; Bennett, p. 19; Fine Bird Books, p. 74; Nissen, IVB, 293; Wood, p. 331.

Description
London: Adam and Charles Black, 1905. Edition de Luxe. Near Fine. Number 181 of 500 numbered copies, signed by the artist's brother, John Greenaway. Large quarto (10 1/2 x 8 1/8 inches; 267 x 206 mm.). xix, [1], 300, [1], [3, blank] pp. Color frontispiece and fifty-three color plates after Kate Greenaway, with descriptive tissue guards, and numerous black and white illustrations, including thirty-four half-tone plates. Publisher's white cloth over beveled boards, front cover and spine lettered in gilt and decoratively stamped in blind in a geometric and floral design. Top edge gilt. Color pictorial endpapers. A near fine copy. All 500 copies of the Edition de Luxe have original Kate Greenaway artwork bound in. The first ten copies have watercolors bound in, and beginning with copy No. 11, each copy has an original pencil sketch. This example has an exceptional original pencil sketch by Kate Greenaway depicting a young girl, standing facing left, wearing a long dress with an empire waist, big puffy sleeves, and a wide sash with a bow at the back. At upper right, are detailed sketches of her arms, wearing long fingerless gloves, resting on a surface. "Victorian-era children's book artist and author Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) began her career during the early 1870s illustrating greeting cards," (NYPL) but she soon turned her successful brush towards book illustration. "Like fellow illustrators Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott, Greenaway sought to publish innovative children's works of the highest quality. Her focus on depictions of children, however, set her illustrations apart from those of her contemporaries. Greenaway's work is cherished today for its unaffected, pastoral imagery" (NYPL). Her romantic conception of childhood was based in part on her own experiences. Famous critic John Ruskin was known to be a huge admirer of her art. Schuster & Engen 226. Thomson 400. Near Fine.

Description
London: T. Birt, 1828. First edition. Single sheet measuring 250 x 185mm and printed in two columns to recto. Some edgewear to margins not affecting text; a bit of foxing and toning largely confined to margins. A scarce and delicate survivor, OCLC documents only one example (at the National Library of Scotland). The present is the only example on the market. The Dandy Wife is narrated by a man who aimed "to choose me out a loving wife" at the age of twenty-one, but whose experience becomes a warning to "all young men of high renown": "If you want a tidy wife, Beware of a boarding school." What unfolds is a satire of how the marriage economy is affected when women have access to knowledge -- intellectual and physical -- and how by meeting a man's superficial expectations a woman can fulfill her own more pressing needs. Thinking that a boarding school girl will have the innocence, submissiveness, and domestic skill he desires, the narrator selects a wife from among their ranks. Thinking only of what he can obtain from such a bargain, he is unprepared for what an educated woman brings into his house. The Dandy Wife he describes understands the commodity value of her own beauty and material adornment, and that these are her key means for acquiring wealth of her own. "She takes one-half of what I earn, In drinking gin and tea; Besides such frills and furbelows My Dandy Wife does wear...Her sleeves upon her dandy gown, Oh! Lack, they're such a size, You'd think they were two balloons that in the air would rise." Aside from staying on par with fashion trends, her clothing assists her in avoiding domestic tasks she abhors. She refuses to do laundry more than monthly, and through ridiculous cooking failures she rapidly establishes that the kitchen is not a showcase for her skillset. Accustomed to a life of learning, she is not trained to conduct domestic business. By the ballad's end, it becomes clear that the Dandy Wife was savvier in managing a marriage than her husband was. For not only does her superior intellect help her carve out a more satisfying role, but she also has physical knowledge that predates him: "The day that I was married, I thought I'd got a charming maid, But I was much deceived...For scarce five months we'd married been, When she had a darling son.

Description
Strasbourg: [Jean François Le Roux], 1789. Folio broadsheet (525 x 432 mm). Double column, French text on top and German text below, divided into four quadrilaterals by a horizontal thick and thin rule and a vertical woodcut of an ivy-entwined pole, woodcut arms of Strasbourg at top. The texts signed “Albert, Ex Commission.” Deckle edges, formerly folded, tiny tear at fold juncture, folds slightly browned, and darkened on verso. *** A broadside invitation to the citizens of Strasbourg to share with the Secretariat of the Police Commissariat their views on how best to set up workhouses, euphemistically called ateliers, as part of the campaign to eliminate beggars. Four months after the storming of the Bastille — echoed a week later in Strasbourg, where on July 21st the Hotel de Ville was sacked — the authorities launched a democratic appeal to the citizenry to help them deal with the age-old problem of homelessness and vagrancy. Revolutionary events notwithstanding, little had changed in the 25 years since Séguier de Saint-Brisson had published his plea against the prison mentality of the law-and-order establishment. The author of this broadside (one Albert, a member of an anti-poverty Commission) makes the usual clichéd distinction between the “good” poor, hard-working or infirm, and those professional beggars who are steeped in vice. The plan outlined is firmly one of poorhouses, where the arrested homeless are to be imprisoned and enslaved; the commission asks the public simply to help brainstorm their implementation. It had evidently become clear by this time that large-scale poorhouses did not work well, and the trend was now toward smaller local establishments. The loyal citizens of Strasbourg, and clerics in particular, since they have experience in charitable work, are asked to advise on the details: where the ateliers should be set up, how they should be administered, what kind of work should be assigned to the inhabitants, and what their relationship should be with existing charitable institutions. I locate no other copies of the broadside, but the text was published at the same time in a 6-page quarto pamphlet, in the same typeface and with the same woodcut arms; the printer “Johann Franz Le Roux” is identified in its colophon. (The copy at the University of Tübingen is digitized.) Le Roux, printer for the King, the Bishopric, and the City, was 89 years old at the time; he died a few months later (cf. the website  Maisons de Strasbourg). Not in Garnier, Essai de bibliographie charitable, which lists 3 pieces relating to Strasbourg, from 1803, 1836 and 1842 (no. 1487-1489).

Description
1787. Interesting Treatise on Maritime Law Praised by Joseph Story Targa, Carlo [1614-1700]. Ponderazioni Sopra la Contrattazione Marittima. Genoa: Dagli Eredi di Adamo Scionico, 1787. [viii], 259 pp. Quarto (8" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary tree calf, blind rules to boards, lettering piece and gilt ornaments to spine, edges rouged. Light rubbing to extremities with minor wear to corners, a few minor scuffs to boards, hinges cracked. Light toning to text, internally clean. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown. A handsome copy. $500. * An enlarged later edition of an interesting treatise on maritime law, contracts and insurance. The main text is followed by a critical edition of the Rhodian Sea Law (in Greek with a parallel Latin text), which was compiled between 600-800 CE, and the complete text of the Florentine insurance statutes, which were enacted in 1529. Joseph Story held this work in high regard: "We had almost forgotten to speak of Targa, who, in his Reflections on Maritime Contracts, has drawn from the civil and canon law, the Consolato del Mare, the usages of maritime nations, and preceding writers, the most useful learning on all the subjects of maritime law except insurance; and has adapted his work to practice by collecting the forms of the various contracts, with hints for their proper application. He is generally esteemed as an industrious and correct author; but his fame seems lost in the superior blaze of his illustrious countryman.": "Literature of the Maritime Law" (1818) reprinted in The Miscellaneous Writings of Joseph Story, ed. William W. Story 111-112. OCLC locates 4 copies of this edition, 2 in the United States, both in law libraries (University of Michigan, University of Virginia). Not in Kress or Goldsmiths.' This edition not in the British Museum Catalogue.

Asheville: Dennis Stamey, 1971. First Edition. Staplebound. Good. 6p. Good. Bound with one staple, pages folded, presumably from mailing, with some faint stains and handling wear, underlining to the final article about the "Death of ufology." A collection of short articles in the Fortean vein, with one discussing a Mothman sighting in North Carolina. In the final article, Stamey predicts the death of ufology with the ultraterrestrial hypothesis, criticizing John A. Keel's conclusions in Operation Trojan Horse by stating, "the final answer is still not going to be found in the simplicity of occult bugaboos using earth as a chess board." From the collection of ufologist Tom Benson. [Eberhart 9755].

The first issue of this newsletter was published in the summer of 2010 around the same time as the movement's main journal ("Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal") moved its production location to Lake Worth, Florida and began releasing on a quarterly schedule. This new (shorter) newsletter was then intended to be released as a regular update in between the main journal's new quarterly release schedule. Announcement at the top of this work states: "CHANGES AT THE EARTH FIRST! JOURNAL: Here, before you is the first issue of Earth First! News, the newsletter of the radical environmental movement. The frontlines of environmental struggles and ecological defense from around the world, we bring you a compendium of the most vital direct action, resistance and environmental news. The EF! Journal collective is currently compiling and editing the newsletter, although we intend to share these responsibilities with other EF! collectives in future editions. If you want to contribute, e-mail us at: [email protected], and we will plug you in. Forthcoming this November is the 30th Anniversary Edition of the Earth First! Journal!!! Also on the horizon, the first quarterly issue of the EF! Journal in March of next year—a bound publication of strategy and analysis. Until then, enjoy the introduction of EF! News, a developing project to be released on pace with the harvest calendar; and, check out daily reports with live links and videos at: www.newswire.earthfirstjournal.org. The newsletter can also be downloaded as a PDF for print and distribution from the newswire. Donations are needed to keep these projects going, so please send your contribution of any amount to Earth First! Journal, PO Box 3023, Tucson, AZ 85702. Thank you to everyone who has sent contributions already! If we can send you future issues via e-mail, let us know so that we can reduce our costs. And without further ado..." Section headings of this newsletter: Frontlines (pages 1-2), In the Streets (p3), Death Toll of the Energy Empire (p4), Greenwashing Expose: Losing the Boreal Forest (p5), Eco-Prisoner Birthdates and Updates in Summer/Fall (p6), Barebones (p7), Updates (p7), Earth First! Toolbox (p8), Earth First Directory (p8), Announcements (p8). An announcement in bold at the bottom of page 8 near the mailing address box reads: "Celebrating 30 Years of Earth First! Look out for the November 2010 anniversary issue..." Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980. The group set themselves apart from other environmental groups of the time with their focus on non-hierarchical structures, organic methods of organization and growth, and especially with their utilization of direct action tactics and sabotage (or "monkey wrenching" – inspired by Edward Abbey's novel) in defense of wilderness.
