Description
Leiden: Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevier, 1648. First edition. Hardcover. Nearly Fine. Quarto. [asterisk]4 2[asterisk]2 [alpha]-3[chi]4 3[omicron]2 (= 256 leaves). [12], 500pp. (pp. 16, 251, 404, 420, 494 misprinted 18, 241, 204, 220, 492, respectively). Woodcut printer’s device with motto “Non solus” (Rahir M.7) at title, woodcut head- and tailpieces, lettrines, printed marginalia. Contemporary limp vellum, finely tooled in gilt, paneled covers with central wreaths and triple-fillet borders, a.e.g. and gauffered. Ties perished, vellum lightly soiled, minor wear in upper spine compartment, else a fine, wide-margined copy in an elegant retrospective binding harkening back to the Renaissance, likely intended for presentation. Text in modern Greek of the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism and the Liturgy of the Fathers of Dordrecht, finely printed in three sizes of Greek type, one for the main text, a somewhat smaller one for the biblical quotations and and the smallest for the marginal notes. Prepared chiefly by Guy or Guido de Brès, a noble evangelist and martyr of the Reformed Church of the Netherlands, the Confession de foi des églises réformées wallones et flamandes des Pays-Bas was adopted at various synods between 1571 and 1619, and again at The Hague in 1651. A duodecimo edition of the Belgic Confession in Latin and classical Greek was edited by Jacobus Revius and published by Elsevier in 1623. The present translation is a testament to the efforts of various Greek theologians including Kyrillos Lukaros and Metrophanos to make rapprochements between the Eastern and Protestant churches. The Cephalonia-born Greek Archimandrite Hierotheos Abbatios (ca.1599- ca.1664) matriculated at Leiden University at the end of 1644 and was commissioned the following year by the States General to translate the most important documents of the Dutch Reformation into modern Greek. These works “... do not seem to have circulated in the Levant; and their main importance was that they persuaded the French Huguenots, incorrectly, that the Greeks as a whole rejected the doctrine of Trans-substantiation.” (S. Runciman, The English Historical Review, vol. 83, no. 326, p. 174). An unusual Elzevier production, being printed entirely in Greek. Provenance: From the library of the famous Dutch litterateur Rijklof Michäel van Goens (1748-1810), with his manuscript entry on the title- page. An avid book collector, Van Goens was appointed Professor Extraordinary of Ancient Literature at the University of Utrecht in 1766. As a member of the party of the Stadtholder William V, he became a member of the city council that same year, and in the following years he was one of the major critics of the Dutch support to the Americans. Later entry of “V. di Ravelli Londres Mars 1913”. References: Berghman, Impressions Elzeviriennes, 151. Copinger 1549. Legrand, Bibliographie hellénique, 2:40-46. Rahir 634. K. Description
New York: Great American Tea Company, 1886. Near fine. Original chromolithograph advertising poster, 22 x 32 inches. A stunning print with exceptionally rich color, archivally backed. Professional restoration to edges and a few small spots on the printed area. Near fine. "Ten minutes for refreshments!" was the well-known cry of railroad conductors across the United States before dining cars became common on trains. Hungry and thirsty passengers would rush off the train and into the depot, where they scrambled to order and then bolt down their lunch under the watchful eye of conductor determined to keep the train on schedule. In this advertising print for the Great American Tea Company, the conductor stands in the doorway with pocket watch in hand, calming observing the chaos as customers (all white men served by Black waiters) frantically consume their food and beverages, some leaving smashed crockery in their wake as they rush to re-board the train. Coffee is dispensed from urns advertising the company's Sultana Coffee and its baking powder, and a giant sign on the wall reads "The Teas & Coffee used in this establishment are from the Great American Tea Co." Founded in New York City in 1859, the Great American Tea Company made its name using a direct-to-consumer sales approach that enabled them to offer quality tea at lower prices than found in retail shops. After a period of success selling mail-order to clubs, they began opening their own storefronts, which were sumptuously decorated in a Chinese-inspired style. In 1870, the company was renamed The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (better known today as A&P) in honor of the newly completed transcontinental railroad, but retained the Great American Tea Company name on its products (thus the appearance of the older name in this 1886 print). The company was a major force in American advertising in the late 19th century, using periodicals, circulars, trade cards, and premiums to spread their name. This scarce poster is one of the finest examples of their effective and popular campaigns.

London: Purnell Book Services, Ltd, 1973. Second Edition, Book Club Edition. 207 x 135 mm. (8 1/4 x 5 1/4). 447 pp. STRIKING OLIVE CRUSHED MOROCCO, INLAID AND ONLAID, BY PAUL DELRUE (signed in ink and dated 1973 on front flyleaf), covers and smooth spine with wraparound design composed of the word "ELGAR" in maril onlay of multicolor leathers near foot of boards, and above it a swath of flying birds inlaid in russet leather, RUSSET MOROCCO DOUBLURES with flight of birds onlaid in black morocco, and quotes from Elgar blind-stamped in majuscules, marbled free endpapers, all edges gilt. In a green cloth solander box with paper medallion portrait of Elgar on front cover and brown leather title label on spine. With 20 black & white photographs, including a frontispiece portrait. As new. First printed in 1955, this definitive biography of the self-taught musician described by DNB as "certainly the greatest composer to arise in England since the death of Purcell in 1695" is offered here in a very creative binding by a modern British master. The son of a music shop owner, Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) showed an early talent for music, playing piano in the great houses where his father went to tune the instruments. Elgar scholar Percy Young (1912-2004) traces Elgar's growth as musician and composer from his early career in Worcestershire through his triumphs in London, including his appointment to the Order of Merit (the "O. M." of the title) by King George V--he was the first musician to be so honored. Saying that his music represents "the essence of 'Englishness,'" DNB notes that "his ceremonial music has become part of the national heritage, while his lighter pieces appeal to a public which might not care as much for his symphonies and oratorios." It was the English countryside that most inspired him, and binder Paul Delrue has paid tribute to that, both with the maril onlays in muted colors that evoke a pastoral landscape and with the quotes he has tooled on the doublures: "My idea is there is music in the air, music all around me / I do all my composing in the open / at home all I have to do is write it down" and "This is what I hear all day / the trees are singing my music / or I have sung theirs." Delrue (1944-2024) was a long-standing Fellow of Designer Bookbinders and a founding member and Patron of the Society of Bookbinders, practicing his craft in Wales for nearly 60 years. In the words of Dominic Riley, Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, "He may have produced more artistic bindings than any other of his contemporaries, and his work is cherished by discerning collectors everywhere.".

Bellevue, Washington: Epic Ink Books, 2011. An Elite Gathering of 150 Exceptional Guitars CARTER, Walter. MORGAN, Greg, PEDEN, John, and PROZZO, Marco, photographers. The Guitar Collection. An Elite Gathering of 150 Exceptional Guitars. Bellevue, Washington: Epic Ink Books, 2011. Limited to 1,500 copies of which this is number 420 of 500 copies of the Double-Neck '05 Edition with a signed John John Peden photograph of Paul Reed Smith's PRS Double-Neck Dragon 2005 (see pp. 474-477). Landscape folio (11 x 22 3/4 inches; 279 x 578 mm.). 511,[1, blank] pp. More than 670 full-color images. Full black leather over boards. Together with The Guitar Collection: Stories. Quarto (11 x 8 1/2 inches; 280 x 216 mm.). 192 pp. More than 180 full-color images. Housed in a special custom 'guitar-style' case. Full black leather with two satin nickel catches and burgundy fleece-lining. Also included is a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the publisher Andrew S. Mayer. Near as new. A spectacular and highly specialized production, The Guitar Collection occupies a very unusual niche in the market: part luxury press book, part photographic art object, part museum-level guitar reference, and part memorabilia piece tied to some of the most important collections in rock history. The limitation of 1,500 copies was split evenly (500 copies each) into three editions: The Solidbody '54 Edition; The Double-neck '05 Edition & The Flat-Top '43 Edition. Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, and Keith Richards are but a few of the guitar legends who agreed to have their guitars included in this high-end limited edition book. The collection also features guitars from heralded institutions including Experience Music Project, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Hard Rock International, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. To capture each guitar "on location," a group of three preeminent photographers traveled to over 40 locations in North America and the UK. Walter Carter is the former historian for Gibson Guitar Corporation and the author of ten books on guitars, including Gibson Guitars: 100 Years of an American Icon and Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, he has also written a how-to for co-writing songs and a biography of the Oak Ridge Boys. "For the first time ever, the world's most elite guitars are presented together in this collector's limited edition. Years in the making, and featuring high-definition, state-of-the-art original digital photography throughout, The Guitar Collection is part music documentary and part photographic odyssey. Because of the size and volume of pages, the leather-bound Guitar Collection had to be printed by one of the few companies in the world capable of making a book this size. The sleek custom-made leather case that houses this epic book is secured with satin nickel latches, while its interior is lined with luxury fabric. Also housed within the case is a richly produced companion book, The Guitar Collection: Stories, a certificate of authenticity, and one of three museum-quality prints signed by photographer John Peden. Reviews: "The Guitar Collection is, without a doubt, the most beautiful and visually engrossing guitar expose I've ever seen. For guitar lovers it is the Sistine Chapel of its ilk and almost as big."- Slash "The Guitar Collection is, indeed, the single most sumptuous source of guitar glamour to have ever been conceived. It's an overwhelming compendium, so dazzling in its scope that you might have to lie down after paging through it." - Billy Gibbons, ZZ Top "The Guitar Collection book is, literally, by far the 'Heavy Weight' of all guitar books. It tips the scales on content, size, and beautiful photos, and has a coolness, never before experienced by the true guitar collector." - Rick Nielsen, Cheap Trick "...The Guitar Collection is a revelation...one of the most stunning guitar books ever." - Guitar Aficionado "...huge, luscious images of the most iconic guitars ever....a truly epic read." - Premier Guitar "...just viewing The Guitar Collection is a pleasure." - Robb Report "...a remarkable new book just published by Epic Ink, a small house in Washington State with its own reputation for creating beautiful things." - Worth magazine "...a mammoth and meticulously crafted dual book collection." - Publishers Weekly "This book is grand not only in size but also in content." - Fretboard Journal.com.

Description
Leipzig: Engelmann, 1872. First Edition.. Later half cloth and boards.. Very good; some toning.. 8vo, c, 523, [1 - errata] pp. + 10 lithographic plates. Zollner rec'd. an appointment as prof. at Leipzig. He is best known for his skill at designing instruments, e.g., his photometer. In addition to this, however, his theoretical work based on observations was wide ranging and prescient. One of his best books is offered here. In it Zollner marshalled what was known about comets and added his own conclusions (correct) about the elements of the nucleus of a comet vaporizing as it approached the sun. In conjunction with presenting his own conclusions Zollner undertakes a minute exegesis of the extant theories of the formation of comets and cosmological implications of their existence. The text follows a path that leads from Kant to Gauss and to contemporaries like Riemann; it incorporates observational data available from an incredible variety of sources. DSB XIV, 627 - ' 29.
