Description
Philadelphia & Chicago: P.W. Ziegler & Co, 1898. Good.. [136]pp., in various paginations, plus forty plates and four blank subscription leaves. Original quarter sheep and stamped cloth. Spine somewhat worn, boards slightly scuffed; corners bumped, minor edge wear. Text block cracked and loosening. Contemporary ownership inscriptions in front endpapers. Light tanning and dust soiling. Attractive salesman's sample for this contemporary, nationalistic account of the Spanish-American War in both Cuba and the Philippines by Henry F. Keenan. Keenan was a Indianapolis journalist and novelist, perhaps most known for his anti-capitalist novel, The Money-Makers (1885). The complete edition of the present work is substantially more pro-American in its account of our conflict with Spain in the late 19th century. This sample represents two binding options -- embossed quarter sheep and cloth on the front board, and illustrated, stamped cloth on the rear. The front endpapers illustrate deluxe full and half morocco options. Although the subscription leaves are blank, a female owner, Maud Evans of Fairfax, Vermont, has inscribed her name twice in the front end leaves. A nice example of the genre, containing a good number of the illustrations.
