Description
1890. First Edition. MARSHALL, Alfred. Principles of Economics. London: Macmillan, 1890. Thick octavo, original green cloth rebacked with original spine laid down. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $16,500.First edition of this foundational work on economics. Only Volume I (as here) was ever published, scarce in contemporary cloth. The founder of ""diagrammatic economics"" and the first to introduce simple graphs as a tool for explaining concepts such as the laws of supply and demand, Alfred Marshall was arguably the most important economist of the 19th century. However, although Marshall was known for sharing his ideas in lectures and in conversations and although the influence of those ideas could be observed in the work of pupils and contemporaries, ""no part of his work was published in any adequate form until the appearance of his Principles of Economics in 1890… When at length it saw the light, his Principles of Economics was readily accepted as the greatest economics treatise of his generation; and for more than 30 years most serious work on the subject was built on his foundations. By the end of 1928 some 40,000 copies of the book had been sold in English, it had been translated into many languages, and its influence had penetrated to all schools of economic thought in every part of the world"" (DNB). By Marshall's death, his students occupied over half of the economic chairs in the U.K. and he was considered to be the father of economics in England. ""More than anyone else, Marshall helped make economics a field of study in its own right"" (Pressman, 64). With 60 page publisher's catalogue dated 10/2/90 bound in at rear. Owner signature in pencil on half title.Only very minor wear to cloth extremities. A beautiful copy, most unusual in this condition.

Description
1774. First Edition. (JOHNSON, Samuel) . The Patriot. Addressed to the Electors of Great Britain. London: T. Cadell, 1774. Slim octavo, period-style half brown calf, red morocco spine label, marbled boards; pp. 33. $1100.First edition, one of only 500 copies, of Johnson's anonymously published political pamphlet supporting his friend Thrale, the Ministerial candidate for Southwark.""The decision to write these [political] pamphlets was perhaps the most purely surprising of Johnson's life. For at least ten years he had been on a pedestal as the great lexicographer and moralist, the lawgiver on letters and on experience, above every conceivable battle. Now, suddenly, he descended into the arena and began laying about him… Quite probably a large part of the motivation was sheer enjoyment, the love of a free-for-all. Controversy, after all, is quite enjoyable, to write as well as to tread… Certainly, if the pamphlets of the 1770s had never been written, we should lack some of his most vigorous and exhilarating prose… In 1774 came a third pamphlet [after The False Alarm of 1770 and Thoughts on Falkland's Islands of 1771], a straight piece of opposition-bashing"" (Wain, Samuel Johnson, 281-83). As issued without half title. This popular pamphlet went through three editions by the following year. Fleeman's 74.10P/1. Courtney & Smith, 117. With one manuscript correction to p. 24 (""just"" to ""first"").A fine copy, handsomely bound.

20/04/1838. Newly retired, he had sent his cotton from the Hermitage to be sold in New Orleans and had borrowed thousands of dollars against their prospective saleAlthough cotton was the sole cash crop of The Hermitage, cotton plants covered only 200 of the more than 1000 acres of the plantation. Production of any other crop was difficult due to the intense amount of labor needed to raise cotton. The perpetual process of planting, weeding then picking required by “king cotton” ruled the daily lives of the enslaved. Andrew Jackson knew he would have to cease depending on cotton for income eventually. The land was wearing out, the price of cotton was falling and the limited growing season made it a great risk.Maunsel White amassed a fortune running a cotton factory business in New Orleans, and became the owner of several plantations in southern Louisiana. White married Celestine de la Ronde, who hailed from a wealthy New Orleans family allied with military leader and U.S. president Andrew Jackson. On Celestine's death, White married her sister, Heloise. He ran Deer Range Plantation until his death in 1863.White had written to update Jackson on the sale of his cotton in New Orleans, and to make a generous offer to allow Jackson access to White’s own funds. Jackson's cotton had not yet sold. ""Messrs. Johnson Raibourne and Co. at Nashville hold about $4000. of my Funds due on 1st april, on acc't Sugar they sold for me, which you may use or any part thereof you may want, until your own Money can be sent to you.""Autograph letter signed, Nashville, April 20, 1838, to Col. Maunsel White. ""My dear sir, I came to Nashville yesterday in hopes to receive a letter from you in reply to mine by express mail on the subject of your funds in the hands of Messrs. Johnson and Rayburn and Co of Nashville used by me. Not receiving a reply, and least an inquiry might advise to you I have deposited in the Planters Bank of Tennessee the sum of $3103, including interest on the $3,087.26 for one month being the amount of your funds used by me. I hope this will meet your wishes. Should it not, please advise and justice, if not done, will be always accorded by me to you."" He adds a ps: ""The certificate of deposit [not present] on the other leaf - AJ."" Lightly silked.

Description
London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1829. FIRST EDITION. With 29 hand-colored engraved plates (numbered 1-18 18a, 18b, 19-27). Contemporary cloth, rebacked; boards worn and sunned, interior clean and bright. First edition. Seeing that Thomas Bateman’s classic dermatology work Delineations of cutaneous diseases (1817) was too expensive for most students, Thomson published this Atlas of delineations of cutaneous eruptions which reproduced many of the illustrations from Bateman’s work on a smaller scale. Bateman’s atlas was notable for the fine colored plates, and Thomson does a fine job in re-creating many of those plates plus adding his own additional illustrations. On the rear paste-down is a manuscript index of the plates. Thomson (1778-1849) was a Scottish physician and a pioneer in dermatology. He was appointed professor of materia medica and therapeutics at the newly founded University of London where he conducted a clinic for skin diseases, the first clinic of its kind to be established at a teaching hospital.

Description
1937 9" x 7" Type 1 black and white photo. Photo of New York Giants (L to R) Carl Hubbell, Cliff Melton, and Dick Bartell, in the dugout after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies to secure the pennant. Fine photo. Overall, a beautiful photo, capturing a significant moment in Hubbell's career. In 1937, the New York Giants won the National League pennant, but would go on to lose in the World Series against the New York Yankees in five games. This photo is taken after the Giants' pennant-clinching game against the Phillies, in which Carl Hubbell allowed only five hits and led his team to a 2-1 victory. Hubbell was a Hall of Fame pitcher who spent his entire career with the Giants. He won NL MVP honors twice (1933, 1936) and was selected for nine All-Star games. His most memorable moment in the league came when he struck out five all-time great hitters - Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin - in a row in the 1934 All-Star Game. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. Also featured in the photo are Dick Bartell and Cliff Melton - Bartell earned two All-Star selections in his career (1933, 1937), while Melton was selected as an All-star in 1942. . Photograph.

Description
Dallas, TX: Dallas Historical Society Hall of State, 1986. Second printing. Spiral bound. VG (cover sunned all else excellent). Purple plastic spiral binding with monochrome illustration on cover. 96 pp. Bw illustrations. Ephemera laid-in. Designed for history teachers of students in grades 4-7 and for museum educators, this teacher's manual interprets art and objects in the Hall of State (Dallas) within the context of the Texas history curriculum. Although the guide focuses specifically on Texas history and the Hall of State, it can be used as a model for museum and school educators in other states. The manual is based on positive findings from a 1982-83 research project in which a collaboration of school and museum educators demonstrated that children learn to a significant degree during a museum field-study experience when it is planned as an integral part of a curriculum unit. Following an abstract of the research project, an interpretative narrative explains the architecture and murals in the Hall of State. Pre- and post-visit learning activities, correlating with "State Board of Education Rules for Curriculum," include a number of reproducible games, crossword puzzles, data retrieval worksheets, and fact sheets. Five interdisciplinary lesson plans for students in grades 4-5 focus on vocabulary development, map skills, data retrieval, oral language development, and interpretation of visual images. Instructional activities for grade 7 focus on symbols, people in Texas history, geographic areas, events that influence the course of history, and heroes and heroines. Three reproducible student handouts, "Texarcana Smith in the Temple of Mysteries, ""Archaeological Dig Discovery Game," and "Lone Star Trivia," are followed by an answer key and bibliography.

[nice clean copy, minimal shelfwear to book; jacket shows just a touch of edgewear, tiny chip at top of spine, small scratch mid-spine]. Novel set in the Japanese-occuped Philippines during World War II. "In this powerful, fast-moving novel of the Philippines, from Pearl Harbor to the return of the Americans, [the author] has dealt with a whole society, created a world in a fashion achieved by few American novelists. [The narrative involves] battles, love affairs, torture chambers, orgies, political machinations, [and] marches through the jungle -- each of these reflect[ing] in one way or another the central struggle in the Philippines and the basic conflict that attends the human condition." Appel had gathered background information for this book while stationed in the Philippines as a special assistant to the U.S. High Commissioner immediately after the end of the war. The book later served as the basis for the 1963 film CRY OF BATTLE, directed by Irving Lerner and starring Van Heflin and Rita Moreno. (Somebody once called Appel "the best hard-boiled writer you've never heard of" -- oh, wait, that somebody was me.) .

Tolkien's The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. Unfinished Tales features 18 full-color paintings from critically acclaimed Tolkien artists, Alan Lee, John Howe, and Ted Nasmith, which reveal the three Ages of Middle-earth like never before. Unfinished Tales is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and provides those who have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with a whole collection of background and new stories. The book concentrates on the realm of Middle-earth and comprises such elements as The Quest of Erebor, Gandalf's lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End; the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand; and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan. Unfinished Tales also contains the only story about the long ages of Numenor before its downfall, and all that is known about such matters as the Five Wizards, the Palantiri and the legend of Amroth. The tales were edited by Christopher Tolkien, who provides a short commentary on each story, helping the reader to fill in the gaps and put each story into the context of the rest of his father's writings. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, this jacketed hardcover of Unfinished Tales includes 18 gorgeous paintings depicting scenes from the First, Second, and Third Ages of Middle-earth from critically acclaimed Tolkien artists, Alan Lee, John Howe, and Ted Nasmith.
