Peter Lombard's Four Books of Sentences, a systematic compilation of theology, was the standard textbook of theology at medieval universities. As a subject of Christian exegesis it was second only to the Bible. “The book, which owed its success chiefly to its lucid arrangement, its comprehensiveness, and its absence of individuality, was commented on by nearly all theologians of repute and even versified[!]. It was finally superseded by the `Summa Theologiae’ of St. Thomas Aquinas...” (Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church).  This is the third of five incunable editions of Aquinas’ commentary on Lombard's fourth book, dealing with the sacraments.  Heinrich Quentell (or Quentel), a native of Strassburg, was the most prolific printer of fifteenth-century Cologne, producing scholastic texts, humanistic works, schoolbooks, and liturgy. His heirs continued printing nearly as energetically for almost 20 years after his death in 1501. This edition was one of the earliest productions of his first press, which he ran from 1478 to 1483, before a sojourn of four years in Antwerp. The first page of this edition is illustrated with Quentell’s splendid four-block woodcut border, the lower compartment of which shows the Three Magi. Following Barbarossa’s transport of the purported remains of Balthasar, Melchior and Caspar from Milan to Cologne in 1164, the Magi became associated with that city, and were referred to even outside Germany as the ”Three Kings of Cologne.” Thus Quentell’s use of the border in his first printed work, the two-volume Low-German Bible [1478], was a clear nod to his adopted city. The border was used again in 1479 and 1480, in this edition and two others, and for the 1481 reprint of the Bible, each time using the same four blocks. In this edition, the foot of the block on the gutter side was trimmed or damaged. The lower border shows the Three Wise Men, two kneeling, before the enthroned Virgin and Child, flanked by soldiers. A herald at right wears a shield with the arms of Cologne; his counterpart on the left bears a blank shield, intended to be filled in by the book’s owner. All are in medieval dress. The remaining border blocks show a delightful swirl of acanthus leaves and flowers, enclosing hunters with a hare and a hunting horn, dogs, monkeys, a peasant carrying geese in a basket, a richly clad lady, musicians and mummers. The scattered rubrication in this copy was supplied by the reader whose annotations appear occasionally in the margins; he rubricated the final table of questions (Z2v-Z8v) most consistently.  Eucharius Henner, or Eucharius Gallinarius (fl. 1475-1510), a humanist from Bretten, served as canon at Speyer (cf. CERL Thesaurus). Rosebud, South Dakota: United States Department of the Interior, 1936. Very good. Large three-ring binder with mylar sleeves holding 307 leaves with text and photos on versos only. Pages hold 320 black and white photographs inserted into corner mounts, all of which have typescript captions and measure from 2½" x 3½" to 2¾" x 4½". Generally very good or better with toned leaves and near fine photographs. This is an enormous and comprehensive report on the Rosebud Reservation and Yankton Sub Agency as of 1936. It was issued during the Dust Bowl era when Rosebud suffered severe ecological and economic devastation, exacerbated by the failure of homesteaders' farming practices. Black blizzards, such as the 1934 storm in Gregory County, left land near the Rosebud Reservation barren and unproductive, forcing a re-evaluation of land usage in the area. This report fully documents the progress made during an extremely difficult time. In addition, this expansive report clearly documents the substantial changes resulting from the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, which instituted a number of reforms aimed at restoring tribal self-determination, and assisting Lakota, Sioux, and related tribes in reorganizing their own governments, due to grinding poverty, and impact of the Great Depression on spurring conflicts between older and younger generations. Largely due to the efforts of Commissioner of Indian Affairs John Collier, this resulted in clear changes to agricultural practices, elevated the younger generation into tribal leadership roles over their elders, despite the claims of cultural renewal through New Deal program efforts. The report contains 54 pages of narrative text. There are also 42 pages of completed forms and other data, as well as seven pages of clothing patterns. We learn from a two page summation of activities and accomplishments that the total income from livestock products totaled $45,240 and that "even though the farm crops were almost a total failure, 12017 tons of hay was put up during the year." We also learn from the summation that the reservations had 25 active 4-H Clubs and that "642,492 acres of Indian land was leased to whites for $74,246." Early in the narrative is a statement regarding general policies: "The extension program was launched this year with the idea of stimulating and assisting the Indian people to make greater efforts to care for and support themselves . . . Cooperation has been the keynote of the work with the Indian groups as well as in the relationship with other divisions of the government service, and in contact with outside organizations. Help has been given to churches, schools when requested and to other branches of the service. Federated Womens' Clubs have assisted on extension projects and the home extension agent has helped with club programs. All the above organizations and all branches of the Federal service represented at the Agency are working for better conditions among the Indians. More can be accomplished through cooperation, with sympathetic understanding of each other's program, than by each group working separately. All in all the extension workers aim is to 'Help the Indians to Help Themselves.' Progress can be reported in this respect. Training and use of Indian leaders as has been practiced on this jurisdiction, together with a return of weather normally, should greatly accelerate this progress." The photographs are exceptionally detailed and correspond to the narrative reports. They are laid out in the following 14 categories: horses, cattle, goats, poultry, hay, community buildings, wells, rehabilitation (of animals and dwellings), fairs and exhibits, gardens, arts and crafts, yard improvement, clothing and 4-H Club. Each section has numerous photos, all with detailed captions. These photos and instructions show 4-H members learning how to transplant crops, build irrigation ditches, and improve irrigation similar to the contemporary CCC projects, and also modernize farming methods to cope with the impacts of the 1930's dust bowl conditions. Approximately 150 photographs depict the native populace and many show buildings, dwellings and living conditions. Every aspect of local life and culture is shown in these photographs, which of particular interest include extended notes and photographs depicting the efforts for Native American women, such as the Bdiheca Woman's Club encouraging sewing, buying eye glasses, and engaged with WPA woodwork and clothing projects. W.J. Bradley reports on the 4H program that "this is the first project of this kind to be undertaken either Indian or White boys off a reservation. Every individual that worked in cooperation with the boys and myself realized that the project was in the beginning and they wanted it to be a success. Our motto was as follows: Anything that is worth doing at all is worth doing well." Massive, heavily detailed, and full of research opportunity. OCLC locates nothing similar.

Very good, with some small creases and tears, light soiling, markings in pen and pencil, and old tape to paper strips on Sept. 26, 1959 telegram. Overall, an excellent little trove of Hemingway’s telegrams. Housed in a custom navy clamshell box, with spine lettered in gilt, and a navy folder. These telegrams were written by Hemingway to his fourth and final wife, Mary, just two years before he committed suicide in 1961. In the telegrams, he checks in with his wife from Paris, Málaga, and Havana, and signs them affectionately, as “Papa” and “Big Kitten.” In the longest telegram (~30 words), Hemingway mentions Chuck Atkinson, his longtime friend from Idaho, who was with Hemingway the day before he died. Ernest and Mary were married from 1946 until Ernest’s death in 1961. After his death, Mary became his literary executor and was responsible for publishing important posthumous works like A Moveable Feast (1964) and Islands in the Stream (1970).. Very Good.

Much of the inspiration for this novel and its 1954 sequel Sweet Thursday were drawn from the author's own life; Steinbeck was born in Monterey County, grew up knowing fishermen and other laborers, and was close friends with a marine biologist, Ed Ricketts, who worked on the real Cannery Row and served as the inspiration for the character Doc. . London: Printed by M.F. [Miles Flesher], 1645. FIRST EDITION. Two separate titles, both within ruled border, table of contents and errata, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, front cover a bit stained, interior generally excellent with minor browning. Inscriptions from 4 possible early hands on the first title, and though most are crossed-out, abbreviated, or illegible, the name “Griffith” can be read. A Latin phrase “servivir deo regnare est” in a contemporary hand also on the title page. Housed in a clamshell box. First edition, rare on the market. A body of divinitie was published while Ussher was in residence in Wales. Essentially a Calivinist catechism, the book explains every major tenet of the religion. However, he basically claimed that he did not author this book. In a letter dated May 13, 1645, after the book was published, Ussher expressed his disapproval to the publisher, John Downame (Downham), describing A body of divinitie as “so imperfect a thing copied verbatim out of others, and in divers places dissonant from my own judgment, may not by any means be owned by me.” Despite Ussher’s disavowal of the text, numerous editions followed with the last printed in 1677. Ussher (1581-1656) was highly regarded in his day as a churchman and as a scholar. In 1625, he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh, the highest position in the Irish Anglican Church. He was also vice-chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin, and a member of King James’ Privy Council in Ireland. He opposed any concessions or graces given to the “papists” in his native Ireland preceding and during the English Civil War.

Contemporary manuscript note at p. 39. Some scattered foxing due to the quality of the paper, all in all a good, genuine copy. Rare first edition, dedicated by the author to John Acton (1736-1811), commander of the navy of the Kingdom of Naples, of this work dealing with gambling from every possible angle: mathematical, statistical, ethical, economical, legal, psychological, and social. In 1790, at the age of twenty-five, Francesco Bernardino Cicala published in Naples the Saggio filosofico e critico sulli giuochi di azzardo, echoing in its title another work on the same subject by P.R. Montmort (Essai d'analyses sure les jeux de hazard, Paris, 1708). The treatise is not a mere examination of mathematical operations, but a series of insights on gambling interpreted in the context of human action and from a historical perspective. The author does not hide his personal involvement, having personally known the gambling tables. His personal experience acquires, however, through introspective analyses a public dimension. Indeed, the self-inquiry broadens to include groups, social classes and the entire nation. Gambling is investigated not only as an individual issue, but also in its collective dimension. The spreading of gambling is seen as a political problem to be dealt with through the critical lenses of the rationalist culture of the Enlightenment. The Saggio consists of two sections, each comprising eight chapters: Human Sensibility, The Passion for the Game, Moral Effects, Consequences, Vicious Habits, Address to the Beautiful Sex, Time, its Use and Abuse, Physical Effects, Origins, Subject of Disputes, Matter of Calculation, Political Aims, Theory of Justice, Legislation, Law of Proscription, Linguet on Examination. In addition to the usual classical and Christian authors, quotations from French, German and English thinkers are particularly numerous in the work: J. De la Bruyère, F. de la Rochefoucauld, H. Grotius, Cl.-A. Helvetius, S. Pufendorf, Ch.-L. Montesquieu, D. Diderot, F.-M. Voltaire, J.J. Rousseau, P.L. Maupertuis, É. Condillac, J. Locke, and W. Balckstone. Significant are also the references to Italian Enlightenment philosophers like A. Genovesi, G. Filangieri and C. Beccaria, remembered for his article on gambling published in the journal "Il Caffè". In describing the physical effects of gambling, Cicala achieves a remarkable effectiveness by using with confidence his medical knowledge of the functioning of the human organism. Ethical-philosophical reflections, on the other hand, intersect with mathematical theories and the calculus of probability. Cicala is well aware of the latest scientific-mathematical achievements in this field, and quotes Montmort, Bernoulli and Moivre. Cicala also does not forget the role of women in gambling, providing an in-depth analysis of individual male and female behaviors. For Cicala gambling concerns both sexes, but he feels the need to directly addresses the female audience traditionally excluded from the debate of ideas. Concluding his analysis, Cicala also assesses the positive and recreational aspects of gambling if practiced in moderation, considering gambling as permissible when it creates healthy conditions of recreation and sociability that are positive both for the individual and the community (cf. E. Filieri, Francesco Bernardino Cicala 1765-1815, tra passione e ragione: il gioco d'azzardo nella pubblica armonia, in: "Il Canone e la Biblioteca, costruzioni e decostruzioni della tradizione letteraria italiana", A. Quondam, ed., Rome, 2002, II, pp. 353-360). When he wrote the present work, Cicala was a young man of 25, living in Naples at a time when gambling was a defining moment in society life. He had been for years very sensitive to both social gatherings and the passion for gambling. When he wrote the essay he had long avoided the now hated gambling tables: for him they had become only places to stay away from, because they evoked in him atmospheres and memories of a pathology that were still too vivid in his memory. It is precisely this pathology and the states of mind associated with it that Cicala analyzes in detail, with a particular attention to the interpersonal and social fallout of the gambler's behaviors. Cicala is at the same time a man of his time and a forerunner of a knowledge that was not yet widespread scientific patrimony at his time. His interpretation of the compulsion for gambling is no more in moralistic terms, but rather in the broader framework of ethics, medicine and psychic introspection. Francesco Bernardino Cicala, born in Lecce in 1765, began writing at a very young age. At 20 he had already composed two tragedies, Marcantonio in Egitto (which remained unpublished) and Gli Arsacidi, which was successfully performed in Naples, replicated in various Italian cities and first published in 1789. His tragedies also include Merope, La dinastia degli Eraclidi, Meride, Erode (remained unpublished), and Ermione, first performed in 1797 and published in 1798. Admitted, at only 22, to the Academy of Arcadia under the name Melindo Alitreo, at 27 he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Letters in Naples. He was also a member of the Accademia del Buon Gusto in Palermo and the Accademia dei Pastori Ereini-Imerei. Most of his poems and tragedies were published in the two volumes of the Opere (Lecce, 1814). In 1799 Cicala joined the Republic of Naples. When the Bourbons returned, he was imprisoned for two years, then forced to flee outside the kingdom. Returning home with the arrival of the Napoleonids, he settled in Lecce, where he died in 1815. Germany, early 13th century. 273 x 193 mm. (10 3/4 x 7 1/2"). Single column, 31 lines, text in two sizes in a gothic hand. Rubrics in red, several one- and two-line initials in red, and two larger initials in red. A few lines with neumes, later notations in the margins (now quite faded). ◆Vellum a bit soiled and creased as expected, fading to four or five lines where the spine was placed, several notches along one edge, other imperfections due to its reuse as binding scrap, but still an excellent specimen that is almost entirely legible. Written in a neat and attractive hand, this sizable leaf from a Missal remains mostly quite legible, with all its rubrication intact, despite having been used as part of a binding. A few lines also show musical notation from the earliest generation of neumes. They are described as "in campo aperto," which means literally "in an open field," because they and they alone occupy the space (or "field") above the text. They are also described as adiastematic because they appear in a straight line, whereas later diastematic neumes reflect changes in pitch by being placed in a higher or lower vertical position above the text. At the time the present leaf was written out, the neumes here simply served as an "aide memoire" to the singer, who had already learned the melody orally..

Very good. Flexible leather binder containing 29 black and white, 8" x 10" photographs inserted back-to-back in clear sleeves. Stamped in gilt on the cover with the name of the owner/recipient, James Stubbers, as well as the Hiram Walker name and logo. Each photo has a typed caption. Fine condition. Hiram Walker & Sons was founded in Windsor, Ontario, by American entrepreneur Hiram Walker, who focused on creating, branding, and marketing an uncommonly smooth and palatable whisky. His signature product, Hiram Walker's Club Whisky, proved extremely popular in both Canada and the United States, and by 1882 the company was offering 27 varieties of whisky. In 1889, after the U.S. Congress passed legislation requiring the country of origin to be shown on all labels, the brand was re-named Canadian Club. Today Hiram Walker is "one of the three largest distilleries in the world, exporting products to over 150 countries. Through growth and expansion, the company now consists of three Canadian distilleries and four American marketing subsidiaries, as well as a bottling facility, a glass company, and a distillery. It owns 11 Scottish distilling plants and has holdings in France, Mexico, Argentina, and Spain" (Source: referenceforbusiness website). This album, which dates from about 1950, offers an informative visual tour of the company's operations in Peoria, Illinois (described in a caption as the "World's largest and most modern beverage distillery") and emphasizes their focus on quality. The photographs show the on-site grain elevator, inspection of corn prior to acceptance, milling machines, pressure cookers ("retain desired volatile flavors of the grain"), yeast selection process, fermentation tanks, stills ("different stills are used in producing 13 base whiskies"), oak barrel assembly and charring process, blending tanks, filtration pads, percolator for creating flavoring extracts, research laboratories, and more. Several images show a group of sales executives who seem to be taking a tour, and in one they are doing taste tests on Canadian Club, as well as Hiram Walker vodka, gin, peppermint schnaaps, and creme de cacao. The recipient of this album, James Charles Stubbers (1929-2004) worked as a Hiram Walker sales executive before joining his father in Kennedy-Stubbers Distributing, a Missouri-based liquor wholesaler that maintained close ties to Hiram Walker & Sons. Stubbers may be one of the executives shown in the album, but we have not located a photograph of him for comparison.

A scarce account of the events surrounding the death of William Milton, described as "a useful, hard-working, law-abiding citizen...a devoted husband and loving father...sympathetic to his neighbors' problems...what people call a good man" who was also "a Negro and so marked out for that special torture that American society visits upon men and women who are colored." On July 14, 1948, Milton was killed by Brooklyn Patrolman Peter Kilcommons in the hallway of his own building. Milton and three friends ran from police after being thrown out of a Williamsburg bar by a racist bartender named Charles Kennefick who "didn't want Negroes around." Kilcommons chased Milton to his front door, then shot him once in the back and twice in the chest in front of about ten witnesses, including Milton's wife Irene and their son, Eugene Milton. Eugene describes the incident in a heartbreaking passage: "I saw Daddy drop as the first bullet hit him.... I saw Daddy drop and then stagger inside. Kilcommons and O'Neil were shooting at him as he went in." There are also further accounts of the shooting recorded here from young neighbors. The text also includes the measures sought by the Committee for Justice in the Milton Case. The Committee argued for the dismissal and indictment of Kilcommons and O'Neil, the dismissal of Police Commissioner Wallander, financial support for Irene Milton, and for continued support of Milton's brother, Joseph, who was with William in the bar on the fateful night. Joseph was charged with felonious assault on the bartender Kennefick after William was killed, likely as a cover for the police in William's killing. Shields argues a motive for the arrest and beating of Joseph Milton: "The cops were trying to make him confess that William and himself had started the fight. The cops thought that such a 'confession' would give them an 'out' for the killing." A possible motive for the killing of William Milton also emerged after his murder. Milton was a member of the Communist Party and a community activist in New York who was often critical of the police violence he encountered in the city. He would also bring copies of The Daily Worker to his neighbors, and was instrumental in organizing a renter's strike in a nearby building. Milton was especially vocal in his criticism of police following the killing of two African-American men by a police officer named Joseph Romeika in Freeport, Long Island. Four young African-American siblings named Ferguson - Charles, Joseph, Alonzo, and Richard - three of whom were U.S. Army veterans were refused coffee by a white manager of a diner. After they vigorously protested, the manager called the police on the brothers. They left but were soon confronted by Romeika, a rookie police officer. Romeika lined the men up and after two of the brothers protested, Romeika kicked them in the groin and shot them, an eerily-similar situation to the one that eventually led to Milton's murder. The author of the present work, Art Shields, was a legendary labor journalist who had previously written about the Sacco & Vanzetti case and would spend his career on the side of unions and laborers, notably miners. He was highly critical of police actions such as the one recorded here, which he described "as brutal a homicide as if the cops had been working for Heinrich Himmler, the Nazi Gestapo leader, instead of for Police Commissioner Arthur Wallander of New York." The Introduction was written by Simon W. Gerson, one of the foremost leaders of the Communist Party in the United States and editor of The Daily Worker, who writes passionately about the murder of Milton: "Yes, William Milton lived under Jim Crow right here in New York. In fact, he died from Jim Crow. He was lynched, my friends, lynched. What matter is it if a man is lynched by a hempen rope from a Georgia cottonwood-tree or lynched by a police revolver in the trigger-happy hands of a Brooklyn cop?" The penultimate page of the pamphlet contains a group photograph which includes Gerson, along with a Brooklyn councilman, Mrs. Joseph Milton, Irene Milton, and Eugene Milton "at Madison Sq. Garden Rally" presumably in support of the Committee for Justice in the Milton Case. An important story that still resonates today about police crimes against the African-American population.

Carl Magnus Torsten Armfelt, the son of Count and Countess Armfelt of Finland and Sweden, was an American citizen living in Hawaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. He was picked up by military officers the following day and interned for 20 months. After Armfelt and several other detainees filed a lawsuit in 1946, Secretary of War Robert S. Patterson insisted that the 617 interned Hawaiian residents were held because the evidence of their disloyalty made them a security risk. Far from being detained on the erroneous assumption that he was an enemy alien, said Patterson, Armfelt was interned on the basis of FBI information that he was "a fanatical follower of Hitler, that he was outspokenly contemptuous of the principles of democracy and of the president and constitution of the United States, and that he was a bitter anti-Semitic, an advocate of Nazism in this country, an intimate of Axis diplomats and their families, and a member of the Swedish Nazi party." In 1954, the man who hated democracy struck a pose as its defender. He founded the Patrick Henry Congress as a pressure group to build public support for a preemptive nuclear strike on the Soviet Union. The membership dues were $1 a month after an initial $5 join-up fee, but subscriptions seem to have been underwhelming: Armfelt filed for bankruptcy in 1955. The country's elected leaders formally rejected the possibility of a first-strike on the U.S.S.R., though recently-declassified documents make it clear that many generals were highly sympathetic to the arguments put forth in this pamphlet. A preemptive strike on Russia and/or China was secretly on the table throughout the late '40s and '50s. Rare Cold War ephemera with just one OCLC listing.
