A very rare set of the woodblock-printed Sutra of the Heap of Jewels (Skt. Mahāratnakūṭa Sūtra, T. 0310) from northern Vietnam, here in 21 volumes (our set lacks Vols. 1, 13, & 20). We identify only one other surviving copy, in the Institute of Sino-Nôm Studies in Hanoi (Viện nghiên cứu Hán Nôm AC.666/1-24). We do not know if that set is complete. “The Mahāratnakūṭa Sūtra is not a single Buddhist work, but a large collection of forty-nine works [which] in its present Chinese form was compiled in the T’ang dynasty by Bodhiruci, a South Indian Brahman and illustrious Tripiṭaka master who arrived in China in 693” (K. Priscilla Pedersen, “Notes on the Ratnakūṭa Collection,” Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies 3.2 (1980), p. 60). In 1926, the first year of the Bảo Đại reign, a meeting was held among the high-ranking monks of modern-day Hanoi to continue a project left behind in 1917 by the deceased abbot of the Linh Quang Tự 靈光寺 temple, which was to carve a set of woodblocks for printing the Mahāratnakūṭa Sūtra, or the Sutra of the Heap of Jewels. Led by Bhikṣu Thông Mệnh 通命 of the Đào Xuyên tự 桃川寺 temple and Bhikṣu Thanh Thứ 清恕 of the Linh Sóc tự 靈朔寺 temple, the project was very much a product of its time. Rather than merely reprinting the Sutra as it was already known to Vietnamese Buddhists, the monks were delighted to discover — and incorporate into their edition — two further versions of the text, one being from the Japanese Buddhist Canon held at the colonial Bác cổ trường 博古場 (i.e., l’École française d’Extrême-Orient) in Hanoi, the other being a Chinese copy brought by Bhikṣu Tâm Trí 心智. The three versions — referred to as the “southern version” (nam bổn 南本), the “northern version” (bắc bổn 北本), and the “Japanese version” (nhật bổn 日本) — were carefully compared and collated by the editors, whose notes at the end of each chapter list all textual variants down to the page and line numbers (Preface transcribed in Phạm Lê Huy, “Nihon no kanyaku Daizōkyō” 日本の漢訳大蔵経, Riterashī shi kenkyū リテラシー史研究 14 (2021), p. 97). The resulting edition of the Sutra of the Heap of Jewels, despite the traditional-seeming xylographic form and the use of Sinographs (which were being quickly replaced by the Latin-based quốc ngữ after the abolition of the civil service exams in 1919), is therefore a product of its time, enabled by the forces of colonial modernity and partaking in the Buddhist revival movements that were to unfold, over the next few decades, across the Asiatic world. The carving of the 1300 woodblocks for this Sutra was an expensive affair, and the final volume ends by listing the names, affiliations, and contributions of over 100 donors (mostly monks and nuns of various temples) who had contributed to its making. Their donations ranged from 300 Indochinese piastre (from Bhikṣu Tâm Trí himself) to one piastre, the contribution of many nuns placed at the end of the list. The woodblocks were kept — and might still be kept — at the Linh Quang Tự temple in Hanoi, which based on a recent count, preserves about 2600 woodblocks to this day (Nguyễn Tuấn Cường et al., “Buddhist Print Culture in Nineteenth-Century Northern Vietnam,” Journal of Vietnamese Studies 13.3 (2018), pp. 74–75). Finally, a note on Vietnamese books in general. Despite the country’s long history of Buddhist and Confucian learning, woodblock-printed books published within Vietnam are far fewer in number than their Chinese or Japanese counterparts. This scarcity was due to the high cost of domestic production. According to the estimate of Kathlene Baldanza, as late as the 19th century, “the labor cost of printing in Vietnam was five to ten times higher than in China. Even ink and brushes were more expensive to produce in Vietnam.” Extensive international trade between northern Vietnam and southern China — where plentiful numbers of books were printed at very low costs — meant that “it was generally cheaper to purchase books from China than to buy them locally” (“Publishing, Book Culture, and Reading Practices in Vietnam,” Journal of Vietnamese Studies 13.3 (2018), pp. 10–11). Beyond the limited cases of official and temple-based publishing, Vietnamese publishers were pushed toward niche genres such as Sino-Vietnamese dictionaries, ritual manuals, or morality books. Regardless of genre, woodblock-printed books from Vietnam are very difficult to find today outside a few major collections, such as the Institute of Sino-Nôm Studies in Hanoi and l’École française d’Extrême-Orient in Paris. We will not focus on the massive destruction of the nation’s cultural heritage during its long war of independence in the post World War II period. First edition of this very rare Vietnamese edition of the story of Maudgalyāyana. The journey of Maudgalyāyana (rendered in Chinese as mulian 目連), one of the Buddha’s earliest disciples, into the most abysmal and gruesome of Buddhist hells in his quest to rescue the soul of his mother was perhaps the single most important story in Chinese popular Buddhism since medieval times. The detailed depictions of tortures inflicted upon sinners relayed in Maudgalyāyana’s story made Buddhist cosmology and morality vividly graspable to the laity, and since the 12th century at the latest, staged performances of his underworld travel have accompanied the Ghost Festival held at the full moon of the seventh month, attended by masses of people across social strata. These theatrical retellings of Maudgalyāyana’s travels remained highly popular until the early 20th century and are still sometimes staged today. The tale’s popularity and influence since medieval times had been so immense that David Johnson, a historian of Chinese popular culture, writes that “among the tens of thousands of Chinese operas, none had deeper religious significance, or was watched with greater excitement, or was integrated into a more complex ritual matrix, than [Maudgalyāyana]” (“Actions Speak Louder than Words: The Cultural Significance of Chinese Ritual Opera,” in Ritual Opera, Operatic Ritual, IEAS Publications: 1989, p. 2). Unsurprisingly, then, there was wide dissemination of Maudgalyāyana narratives and rituals not only in China but throughout East Asia in local and vernacular retellings of his story in a large range of religious and literary genres. Our copy of Penitence at the Compassionate Ritual Grounds of Maudgalyāyana, printed in northern Vietnam in 1928, is one such example. It opens with two illustrations from the canonical narrative of Maudgalyāyana: the assembly of disciples attentively surrounding the Buddha, and Maudgalyāyana entering Avīci Hell riding a cloud, holding the Buddha’s magical staff. The book itself is simultaneously a narrative account of Maudgalyāyana’s travels and a Buddhist ritual of penitence, opening as it does with prayers of refuge and devotion to “Shakyamuni, the benevolent father” (Thích-ca từ phụ 釋迦慈父, an interesting appellation). The prayer sections also make use of the placeholding name giáp mỗ 甲某, which during ritual readings of the text was probably to be replaced with one’s own name. Despite sharing the same title as a canonical Buddhist scripture (T. 1909) composed in the Liang dynasty, a comparison of contents suggests that ours is a related but substantially different text. The first Preface makes it clear that this text is indeed based on an original in the “northern country” — i.e., China — and an earlier, domestic edition was made possible by the secular and ritual offerings of the monk Trí Giác 智覺. For some time, the woodblocks had been stored in the Trác điền temple 卓田寺 in Bình Lục 平陸, Hà Nam province, and did not circulate widely. As a result, a reprint was made in Tự Đức 9 (1856) by a monk named Thanh Tuyền Bhikṣu 清泉比丘. His Preface, also dated 1856, is found in the first volume. By the 1920s, however, there was another problem: there were too many variants of the text in circulation, which became a source of confusion. The monk Thanh Hưởng 清亨, using the earlier woodblocks stored at the Anh quang temple 英光寺 (Quần phương hạ 羣芳下 commune, Nam Định province) and with the guidance of Phổ Tụ 普聚, collated various editions in circulation and created a new edition. This editorial history might explain why our copy does not correspond to known Chinese versions of the text, as it probably has incorporated local Vietnamese elements. The woodblocks were carved by two craftsmen (named Phó Dung 付瑢 and Phó Huênh 付轟) from the Liễu choàng xã 柳幢社, with monetary offerings from monks and laypeople across many temples and communes (listed towards the end of the second volume). The carving began in Bảo Đại 1 (1926) and concluded two years later, in 1928; the completed woodblocks were kept at the Anh quang temple. Despite the country’s long history of Buddhist and Confucian learning, woodblock-printed books published within Vietnam itself are far fewer in number today than their Chinese or Japanese counterparts. This scarcity of extant Vietnamese books is due to a variety of factors, including the cost of local printing, a humid climate that makes preservation difficult, as well as the country’s recent, war-torn past. Outside of Buddhist texts kept by individual temples in Vietnam (whose collections are difficult to access), the bulk of these books are now kept at a handful of institutions such as the Institute of Sino-Nôm Studies in Hanoi and l’École française d’Extrême-Orient in Paris. The catalogue of these collections shows two items with the same title as ours (Viện nghiên cứu Hán nôm AC.607 and AC.647), but there is insufficient detail to determine their editions. We find no Vietnamese woodblock-printed copy by this title on WorldCat. Very good set. Final three leaves of the second volume are carefully repaired. Wang (ca. 1552-1638 or 1549-1631) wrote in the Preface to our book (dated 1607, Wanli 35; in trans.): Physicians call pediatrics the “mute specialty” on account of its difficulty. They are referring to the fact that children cannot explain their own illness and suffering. They use the words of the Yellow Emperor to say, “I cannot examine them. Children are in a separate category. They are to be nursed at home.” I alone say that this is not the case. Now, small children have not experienced the shock of the seven emotions and six desires, their organs have not been soaked in the eight delicacies and five flavors. When you give them medicine, you can easily see its effect. It is like the fact that a stomach full of fat meat and fine grain is hard to exhaust, but one with an inferior meal in it is easy to get results. How can this be called hard? However, books from past and present address this specialty cannot be taken as good. For example, the Mirror of [Preserving Life and] Mind [保生]心鑑 is overgrown with weeds, and Categorized Essentials [of the Pediatric Specialty] [幼科]類萃 is cursory, the New Book [?] 新書 contains ancient material but nothing modern, and [Yingtong] baiwen [嬰童]百問 [A Hundred Questions on the Infants and Children] leaves out 10,000 things for every one thing it contains. These books all circulate in our day, but none of them can serve as a standard for pediatrics. For that reason, I have edited the present compilation, placing special focus on clarifying the subject of smallpox [?]. The book is largely a formulary but also contains theoretical pieces, such as the initial essay, “Comprehensive discourse on diagnosis and treatment.” Topics covered are ailments afflicting newborns, problems of the liver, “vigilance,” “epilepsy,” “wind stroke,” “lolling of the head,” “clenched jaw,” “eyes,” “urinary blockage,” “diarrhea,” “residual urination,” “clear urine and turbid relief,” “hernia,” “yin swellings,” “yin ulcers,” “fever,” “slow speech,” “sweating,” “belching qi,” “sores,” and “smallpox” (underlined in the table of contents by a reader of our book), including “prevention,” “the great method,” “first fevers,” “emergence of the shape [of pox],” “when pox have broken out,” etc. There are many more categories besides these; the book is very comprehensive. Wang Kentang was born into a family of officials, with his father at one time holding the post of Vice Minister of the Board of Punishments. Wang read widely, but after his mother fell ill, he began to study medicine. He passed the highest-level civil service examination in 1589 and was assigned to the Hanlin Academy. After he was demoted in a political incident, he retired on account of illness, and dedicated himself once more to medicine. He both authored books and practiced medicine, being credited with successfully surgically removing a tumor on the side of a patient’s eye socket. His book Standard for Diagnosis and Treatment included material from the great works of medicine from the Ming period and earlier. Fine set; slightly worn wrappers.
