Description
London: Printed for A. Millar, 1749. First edition. Very Good +. First edition of one of the great novels of the eighteenth century, which "established the tradition of the comic novel in English" (ODNB). Six volumes in three, twelvemo. lxii, [2, errata], 214; [ii], 324; [ii], 370; [ii], 312; [ii], 294; [ii], 304 pp. Complete, but for final blanks. Marginal chip to leaf C12 in volume six, not touching text. Bound in an unrestored, contemporary binding. Front joint cracked on volume one, holding by the cords. Lacking the rear free end paper in volume one. Minor chipping to the crowns, heaviest on volume three. Housed in three custom purple morocco pull-off boxes and chemises by Mounteney. A well-preserved, unrestored copy, Very Good+ This set has all the points to distinguish it from the virtually identical second edition which followed: vol. I, errata leaf after contents; vol. VI, B5 unsigned; and the following cancels, all signed with their respective volume numbers: vol. I, B9-10; vol. II, B4-5; vol. III, H8-10, M3, Q11; and vol. V, N8. This copy also has a cancel at vol. II, N12 (not called for in Rothschild). Provenance: Baron Carlingford (bookplate); Harold and Mildred Greenhill (bookplates); H. Bradley Martin (bookplate and sale, Sotheby's April 30, 1990, lot 2840); Irwin Silver (Sotheby's April 26, 2005, making $9,000). One of the earliest and most successful examples of the British novel, particularly the comedic genre. All 2,000 copies of the first printing were subscribed prior to the official release, prompting two more printings in 1749. Tom Jones was a bestseller in its day and has never gone out of print; it continues to inspire and amuse new generations of readers. Very Good +.

Description
2 p.l., 385, [1] pp. Small 8vo, disbound (some pale dampstaining & browning), uncut. The Hague: A. de Hondt, 1723. The uncommon sale catalogue of the library of Dalmann; this is one of the “meritorious catalogues recommended by J.G. Schelhorn.”–Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 225. Taylor states that he was tempted to include all the catalogues from Schelhorn’s list found in his Anleitung, including the Dalmann, to his own list of catalogues of private libraries recommended for reference use (pp. 223-66 in Book Catalogues). This was a large library of 3634 lots (1426 lots of folios, 1305 lots of quartos, and 903 lots of octavos and smaller format books). There are an unusual number of 16th-century Spanish books, what appears to be a wonderful set of De Bry, early books in Greek, fine architectural books of the 16th and 17th century, and some rather good incunabula. Manuscripts are included. Very good copy. ❧ Loh, VI, p. 129.

New York: Basic Books, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. xiii, 507pp. Tan cloth with blue spine lettering. Review copy with publisher's slip laid in. Fine in Near Fine unclipped dust jacket, a little curled along top edge and lightly worn at head, back flap creased. A lovely copy of the American sociologist's prescient work that popularized the now ubiquitous term "post-industrial society." Description
France, 1920. Very Good. Clever and charming homemade cards for no particular occasion. N.d., circa 1920s. The two cards, made of folded light blue mottled stationary, are 13 by 17.5 when closed, and the entire pasted decoration is on the closed front page. The one with the children playing uses five different cut-outs, all cut neatly, with the largest image of two girls pulling a long fabric being used as a jump rope, while a separate cut-out has a girl suspended in air above. To the side of one of the girls is a teddy bear. Another cut-out features a girl on a toy horse. The other card has only two cut outs, and the larger one is almost the entirety of an illustration. The card maker was not making her own picture so much. The only augmentation is a small cut-out in a corner of a cat eating from a bowl. The larger image has a caption: "le tablier solide", its point being that the waitress, with her huge stack of plates precariously swaying in her arms, appears to have no place to put them down, with the table nearby is already covered. A chef who looks like a boy is laughing at her predicament as he is drying a pan. The card maker added no writing to the card. The two cards were done by the same person, clearly, who had an affection for cats, and given the caption in French, we assume was a French child. The paper has faded and become a washed out yellow around the perimeter and in the case of the waitress card, over much of its top page. There are flattened creases on the card backs.

Description
(Mansfield Centre): (M. Martino), [2000]. Reprint. As New, still in shrinkwrap. Reprint of the 1948 edition. Cloth; xii, 104 pages. Farquhar has assembled the most complete private library on the mountain regions of the Far West. From this collection he has selected 25 titles of major importance, either in their value as source material or in their rarity, concerning Yosemite, the Big Trees, and the High Sierra. The annotations, many of which are based on original research, go far beyond a mere tabulation of facts, for they bring to light numerous historical vignettes the author has gathered in many years studying and writing about the Sierra.
