Description
Augsburg: Weh, 1655. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to., (4) ff., 128 pp., with four folding plates; lightly toned. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, with title written in ink on spine in a neat hand. Ownership inscription on title-page, some careful underlining and annotations in a neat contemporary hand; lightly toned. Excellent.Rare edition and a fine copy of Galgemayr's very influential text describing the construction & use of two instruments, a proportional compass and a lineal compass for the measurement of volumes and surfaces. The former, closely resembling Galileo's proportional compass, was a popular calculating device used throughout the 17th C. The work was first published in 1615 and re-printed in 1626, 1633, and 1654 with modifications. All editions, however, are very rare owing to the book's practical utility. The copy offered here is enriched by annotations that indicate that it was used as a workbook. These are unusually careful and neat, and a few contain calculations that do not appear derived from the exercises; possibly they are calculations for actual (e.g. real life) situations for which the chapters are being consulted as a model or guide. Together with Uttenhofer's Circinus geometricus (see below), the work provides a vivid picture of a developing technology that ultimately became the modern hand-held calculating machine. * I. Zinner Astronomische Literatur 5046 & 5025 (1626 ed.); Instrumente p. 568; Poggendorf II. 1163; Kiely, Surveying Instruments, p. 226. II. Berlin Kat. 1716 (1633 ed.). The work is bound with an incomplete copy of: UTTENHOFER, K. Circinus Geometricus, zu Teutsch Mess-Circkel, nemlich: Ein Geometrisch Instrument, durch welches ...einen Acker, Wissmat oder Wald abzumessen.... Geschutz zu richten... etliche... Sonnen Uhrn zu machen. Nurenburg, Simon Halbmayr, 1626. 4to., (8) ff., 136 (e.g. 138) pp., (l) ff., including t-p with elaborately engraved architectural border (signed Hauer), 2 folding-plates, [7 of 10] full-page engraved plates [printing error left 3 pages blank], 60 woodcut illustrations in text and numerous tables.

Description
Driftless, WI: Perishable Press, 1973. First edition. One of only 50 copies printed on Shadwell and signed by the artist. "The cover is six vertical scraps of variegated Shadwell randomly zig-zagged together with the text block sewed to one end of the blank side. The cover is then folded under and around the text block with a real fishing fly affixed to the cover. . . . Needless to say this is/was a bibliographer's nightmare about which many letters were received." Hamady 63. Printers' Choice, 68. In our experience, the rarest publication of the Perishable Press. Very fine copy. 4to, cloth & paper wrappers with original print on verso, real fishing fly on front cover. Very fine copy.

Description
London: Printed by Gye & Balne, Gracechurch Street, for the Author, Published by Lackington, Allen & Co, [1814]. FIRST EDITION. 222 x 137 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 1/4"). lvi, [57]-350, [1] leaf (errata). Excellent retrospective half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, spine panels with leafy gilt centerpiece, red morocco label. Engraved title page with vignette of gentlemen playing cards, throwing dice, and watching a horse race. With two folding tables (one divided into two charts) mounted on tabs at rear of volume. Title page faintly foxed, leaves a little yellowed with age, but A FINE COPY, clean and fresh internally, the folding plates without tears, and the sympathetic binding unworn. This is an extremely pleasing copy of a work that introduces the principles of probability to a general audience, including fundamental concepts, real-world decision-making, and, in particular, applications in gambling, with chapters devoted to cards, dice, lotteries, and horse-racing. To teach these concepts, the author presents a series of 90 gambling problems and their solutions, demonstrating how one can calculate the odds of winning instead of relying on mere luck. Rouse also takes a cautionary stance in his introduction, noting that "a knowledge of calculations is likely to prevent, or, at least, to lessen, the final fatal consequences of gaming, which arise more from the inequality of chances or skill in the players, than from any thing intrinsic in any species of play." Although the present work is influenced by earlier treatises, such as Abraham de Moivre's "Doctrine of Chances" (1718), Rouse's work is more accessible and practical, aimed at readers with an interest in probability without requiring advanced mathematical knowledge..

Description
New York: The Polar Publishing Co., 1911 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition. Small quarto. xx, [2], 604pp. Frontis portrait, 49 photographs, text illustrations. Index. Brown pictorial cloth. Some scattered foxing, contemporary owner's signature on blank flyleaf, slight rubbing to spine ends and corners, else a fine copy. Cook's original purpose in exploring the region west of Greenland was ostensibly to organize a hunting expedition. Just north of Etah, Cook decided that conditions were good enough for an assault on the North Pole, and set out on his journey over the sea ice with two Eskimo companions, two sledges and 26 dogs. Cook is one of the most controversial figures in the history of polar exploration. His supporters claim that he was the hero of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, the first to climb Mt. McKinley, and the first to stand at the North Pole (allegedly only four days before Robert Peary). Others insist that Cook faked his claims to both Mt. McKinley and the North Pole, and continued a career of deceit by using the mail to defraud investors in a Texas oil promotion, for which he was convicted and spent five years in federal prison. The endless controversy and debate continues over what Cook's true accomplishments were. [Ricks: p.70; Smith: 1976; Wickersham: 4904 (later printing)]..

Description
Staunton, Virginia: John C. Virdin Company, 1936. Wraps. Brass Clasps. Near Fine. A wide selection of chandeliers, overhead lighting fixtures generally, sconces, indoor and outdoor, many Art Deco, but also more ornate styles that can be loosely described as Victorian, and the primary material besides the light bulbs various metals, sometimes painted, sometimes hammered, sometimes sculpted and shaped, but also glass the design often actualized by molding the glass into striking shapes. The lighting fixtures here, which we would peg as middle-of-the-road for the time, were generally destined for middle class homes and apartment buildings. The clientele were not furnishing mansions and Fifth Avenue penthouses with these fixtures, other than they might draw upon the catalogue for servant's quarters, lesser rooms, and the like. 4to. 28.5 by 22.5 cm. 53, [3] pp. Profusely illustrated, with color illustrations dominating 19 pages. In fact, the first 53 pages feature illustrations, and after the first page, these are of inventory items. The illustrations generally look as if they were drawn, but they are derived from photographs and thus are a sort of hybrid one sees in many a catalogue from the period. and all the other 53 first pages with illustrations. The general pattern is with the color images, there are three to five fixtures shown in a single frame, the fixtures arranged symmetrically, often a larger fixture at the center. The black and white images, on the other hand, will have just one fixture in a frame, but there are three to six frames on the page. One other distinction between the color versus b/w fixture representations -- the color ones tend to be larger. This changes in the latter part of the catalogue where the frames are dispensed with entirely for the non-color renderings. With many of these pages, there are nine fixtures shown also. One other distinction between the color versus b/w fixture representations -- the color ones tend to be larger. There are also enough color examples to allow the catalogue user to imagine how the similar fixtures shown in b/w will look when seen in person. Cover has minor wear, including a few tiny dings and/or closed tears, entirely trivial. The interior is clean.

Braunschweig & New-York: Henry Litolff's Verlag [PN 2300], 1870. Octavo. Original publisher's elaborately blindstamped dark green cloth boards with portrait of composer in relief, spine decorative spine with titling gilt. [i] (title), 2 (cast list and contents), 3-176 pp. Printer's note to foot of p. 2: "Stich und Druck von Henry Litolff's Verlag in Braunschweig." Contents and sung text in French, German, and English. Headers (caption titles) and stage directions in French and German only. Handstamp "Cauderes J. Bordeaux Allees de Tourny 50" to front endpaper. Binding slightly worn, bumped and shaken; Occasional wear and foxing; titled frayed at edges; some leaves partly detached. A later edition. Date according to WorldCat. WeV C.10. Jähns 306 (p. 392). "Th. Hell" is a pseudonym of Carl Winkler (Jähns p. 383). "In accepting a commission from Covent Garden in London, Weber virtually guaranteed that his last opera, Oberon, would stand apart in many ways from his earlier efforts. Behind J.R. Planché's libretto... lay a tradition of English opera more closely allied to 18th-century popular theatre than to contemporary continental opera, a concept of theatre orientated more towards visual spectacle than the musical realization of action and conflict... The main developments take place primarily in spoken dialogue... Obvious parallels with Die Zauberflöte point up further ties to the 18th century: the disposition of the four principal characters into two pairs of lovers, heroic (Rezia and Huon) and comic (Fatima and Sherasmin) respectively; exotic settings (Baghdad and Tunis); magical effects and scene transformations; a magic instrument (Oberon's horn) that on more than one occasion saves the principal characters from harm; and the Enlightenment theme of human perseverance in the face of severe trials." Paul Corneilson et al in Grove Music Online.
