Description
Hardcover. Good. Two commercially produced blank volumes (Gilson Adjustable Album; 1897). Oblong small thick quartos. String-tied uniformly bound on thick cloth boards with "Photographs" in gilt on top boards. Boards stained and mottled but sound and near good; images are mostly near fine with a little silvering at the edges of a few, some modest fading, and some waviness. The two volumes contain 168 larger format images (plus two additionally laid in) each measuring approximately 6.5" x 4.25" inserted into the albums card frames. Many of them are captioned in the negative with dates ranging from 1907-1912, but it seems there could be some images both earlier and later. After a few images of a college graduation, possibly at Princeton, and a few images in Weehawken, New Jersey (including one at the Alexander Hamilton Monument), the vast majority seem to be of a family living or vacationing in Maine which shows various towns and other places including Portland, Lake Webb in Weld, New Vineyard Basin, West Mills, a country fair at Philips, Old Orchard Beach after a fire, Temple, Redington, Wilton Notch, Clear Water Pond, Rangeley Lakes, and Lake Welokennabacook. Additionally there are a few photos taken in Concord and Boston, Massachusetts. Other than bucolic scenery in both summer and in snowy winter, there are several images of trotting horses racing, of women shooting rifles in Farmington, several slightly awkwardly staged portraits of people who were likely family members of the photographer, and a few images near the end of the Half Moon and many other ships the Naval Parade in the Hudson-Fulton Celebration in New York in 1909. Interesting by an enthusiastic amateur, in larger than usual sizes.

Description
Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1927. First Edition. First printing. Inscribed on front endpaper: "Mrs. Annabel Morris Buchanan from the author with sincere good wishes," signed "Ned Adams," datemarked Columbia, SC, 1934. Small octavo (20cm). Black cloth spine over orange-tan cloth-covered boards (hardcover); dustjacket (in pieces) laid-in; xvii,117pp. A tight, clean copy, tightly bound and textually unmarked; Very Good or better. The jacket, completely disarticulated but substantially complete, is laid-in in four pieces. Adams' well-received first book, a collection of dialect stories set among the African-American residents of the Congaree River region of South Carolina. Like pretty much all work in this mode, best intentions aside, Adams's stories are deeply problematic: his use of dialect is cringeworthy to a sensitive modern reader, but in his time and place Adams was an oddity - a well-to-do white physician from an old South Carolina family who was genuinely sympathetic to the plight of southern Blacks, and was heralded by Americans of both European and African descent as a champion of Southern folk culture and civil rights. This copy with an interesting association: presented by the author to Virginia folklorist Annabel Morris Buchanan, founder of the seminal White Top Music Festival in Southwest Virginia which, though it spanned only a decade (1931-1939) was a memorable and important early attempt to recognize and preserve southern Appalachian folk culture. The association - between two "advanced" thinkers whose approaches to cultural preservation (in two separate but oddly interlinked realms), though inarguably well-meaning, might now be looked upon as anachronistic - strikes us as a fruitful starting point for inquiry.

Description
Los Angeles: The Ward Ritchie Press, 1954. Pamphlet. 26p., illustrated with a frontis facsimile of a surviving title page, the reprint in hand is softbound, an 8x5.5 inch pamphlet in blue-grey wraps, staple-fastened. Front cover has mild pressure-lines, both covers have a hint of sunning, an otherwise excellent exemplar: sound, clean, unmarked. Many remedies offered make sense to us herbalist new-agers, but here's an exception: for "Erysipelas. Sprinkle the face with the fresh blood of a black hen and tie to the neck a twig of broom. Tried and tested." Jose de La Rosa was the probable pressman responsible for this Sonoma production. The author, a Spaniard, is unknown. La Rosa's dedicatee would be general Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who preserved Zamorano's press, first located on the Monterey Peninsula, until it was again confiscated by a hostile Mexican government.
