Description
Hundreds of drawings & some text. Nine scrolls (all roughly 260 x 4500 mm.) & one notebook. Japan: late Edo. Japanese shrines and temples require constant maintenance, restoration, and rebuilding. These nine scrolls and one notebook are concerned with the architectural aesthetics of shrines and temples and the highly specialized construction techniques used to construct them, including the complex joinery methods, which did not require the use of nails, glue, or fasteners. As constant reminders in the texts in the scrolls tell us, the crafts illustrated here were to be carefully guarded and passed on to future generations in great secrecy. Apprenticeships could last as long as ten years. Some of the master joiners are named. The drawings in the scrolls are exceptionally detailed, oftentimes in extreme close-up depictions, showing many of the methods of joining, the desired proportions accompanied by measurements, names of individual parts of the materials used in construction, and the problems in building and maintaining a shrine or temple. These nine scrolls contain hundreds of drawings of plans for all aspects of shrines and temples; each is focused on a different topic. These include the many varieties of traditional shrine gates (torii 鳥居), oftentimes with measurements, references to known gates and their creators, and idealized gates with ratios. There are also examples and styles of hafu 破風 (decorative bargeboards or gable end boards), including kara hafu (undulating or cusped gables), irimoya (hip-and-gable), and mukuri hafu (curved gables). The concept of kiwari 木割, the proportional system used to determine the dimensions of building components based on their relationship to other components, is also discussed in one of the scrolls, along with the methods of measuring and cutting wood to achieve a harmonious structure. Many drawings also illustrate the components of taruki 垂木, rafters used to help support a roof in traditional Japanese wooden construction. One scroll illustrates an idealized temple building, with succeeding detailed drawings of its components, measurements, and ratios, along with many illustrations of ornaments. Other scrolls are concerned with the ornamental aspects of shrines and temples, all illustrated in great detail, again with measurements and ratios. One scroll deals with decorative windows, screens, wooden sliding doors, and shelves, in many styles. Another scroll discusses and illustrates a Nōh performing stage and ancillary buildings constructed in August 1774 for Matsudaira Chikuzen no kami (in Kaga fiefdom?). These nine scrolls are accompanied by a manuscript notebook (37 leaves, 8vo, 247 x 173 mm.), which discusses and illustrates gegyo 懸魚, decorative wooden boards or pendants traditionally attached under the roof gables, found on Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and castles. At the ends of four scrolls, it is indicated that they were copied in 1811 and 1819. In fine condition; all preserved in an old wooden box.

Description
London: Macmillan and Co, 1874. First edition. Near Fine. Two volumes, octavo. Signed by the author in black ink to front blank of volume 1. Bound in handsome modern half calf gilt over marbled boards to stylem with twin red morocco spine labels. Wood-engraved portrait frontispiece, 52 plates, 2 lithographic maps, one folding. Scattered foxing, small repaired closed tear to inner margin of large folding map (as usual). A Near Fine copy. A work that is noticeably scarced signed or inscribed. We have only been able to trace one other such example appearing in auction records. A key work of 19th-century African exploration and the suppression of the slave trade in the Nile Basin, "the Khedive Isma'il appointed Baker to a four-year term as governor-general of the equatorial Nile basin, with the rank of pasha and major-general in the Ottoman army. It was the most senior post a European ever received under an Egyptian administration. According to the khedive's firman, Baker's duties included annexing the equatorial Nile basin, establishing Egyptian authority over the region south of Gondokoro [modern-day South Sudan], suppressing the slave trade, introducing cotton cultivation, organizing a network of trading stations throughout the annexed territories, and opening the great lakes near the equator to navigation" (ODNB). "While most of the narrative involves travel and military adventure, there are several episodes of sport as well. Baker's troops bagged crocodile and hippopotamus, depicted in several fascinating engravings. South of Regiaf, the author bagged a pair of elephants, and attempted to collect a few more by using both Hale's rockets and the company's fieldpiece. Later, in Unyoro, he hunted antelope and lion while natives drove the game toward a series of nets" (Czech). Blackmer 66. Czech (Africa) p. 11. Howgego I B10. Ibrahim-Hilmy I p. 49. Near Fine.

Description
Los Angeles: Black Business Directory, Inc, 1970. ii,66pp. Square quarto. Original illustrated peach wrappers printed in black, stapled. Minor edge wear and rubbing, uneven toning to wrappers. Text toned but clean. Very good. A rare business directory intended for use by the African-American community of Los Angeles at the outset of the 1970s. The cover touts the directory's series motto: "Most Complete & First of Its Kind." The directory itself contains listings for a wide variety of businesses, presented alphabetically by business type, ranging from "Accountants" to "Youth Organizations & Centers." As with most other directories, the listings are interspersed with advertisements for a plethora of local Black-owned or managed businesses, including First City Savings, Clarke's Furniture, Vermont Volkswagen, Friendly Chrysler-Plymouth, Lewis Bakery and Soul Deli, Triple AAA Building Maintenance Service, Foreman Driving School, Magnificent Bros. Hair Styling Salon, Kelsey's Termite and Pest Control, Leo's Plastic Slip Covers, Willie Greene's Travel Service, Medallion Printers & Lithographers, and numerous others. The advertisements are often illustrated with portraits of the managers or proprietors of the businesses. The penultimate page of the directory is reserved for a listing of "Supporting White Business." There is also a full-page ad for the publication itself, which touts its advantages and purpose: "Black Business Directory -- Contains over 5,000 competitive Black Businesses in over 250 categories. Purpose -- to stimulate minority employment by exposing minority businesses, services, and products." All four of the directories that we know of in this series are rare. OCLC reports just three copies of the first volume published for the summer of 1969, at the New York Public Library, the Bancroft Library, and the University of Southern California; and just two copies of the second volume, published in the Winter of 1969-70, at NYPL and the Bancroft. The present work is only the second copy of the Summer 1970 edition that we have ever seen or of which we are aware, with no institutional copies reported in OCLC. No copies of the Winter 1970-71 or Summer 1971 editions exist, as far as we know, though they were likely produced, as the Winter of 1971 edition is reported at three institutions -- the University of Southern California, the Bancroft, and Yale.
