Description
New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1929. First Edition. Wrappers. Raw proof of the 1st edition. Printed on proofing paper (7 7/8” X 6 1/2”) on 1 side of the page (rectos) only, and hand bound by the publisher (HB) in brown paper wrappers tied with snips of shoelace (all original). Small control numbers “8476” neatly inked on spine and fly-title, else very good (unrepaired). Need we say primary? Need we say unique? Ok. Literally so for both. Cloth case. A one–off, preceding every other surviving setting in type, and a real movie book, produced with haste, in house, for Jesse Lasky (Famous Players) who was anxious to secure the film rights. On the eve of the depression, and past his prime, Lasky wavered, and then declined, keeping this copy as a souvenir of the opportunity. Dodsworth was ultimately purchased by Sam Goldwyn after he saw the 1934 play scripted by Sidney Howard with Howard’s understated realism. M. G. M. prized it highly, so they gave it back to Howard for a screenplay, and the screenplay, in turn, to a just emerging William Wyler, with his notorious multiple retakes, directing Walter Huston as the world weary Sam Dodsworth, surrounded by supporting performances from Ruth Chatterton, Mary Astor, David Niven, Paul Lukas and Maria Ouspanskaya. The seriously adult film was released 2 years later to lasting acclaim, and Wyler, Huston, Ouspanskaya, and the picture itself, were all nominated for Oscars. Our humble book is the precursor of it all, a drab and plain object, but unique, and with great charm, and authenticity, preceding (and not to be confused with, or compared to) any other prepublication issue, the only recorded ones being those 500 (900?) copies of the regular book hardbound in orange cloth as an advance issue, which is still a common item, as are the 49,500 copies of the 1st edition in dark blue cloth and dustjacket.

Description
Rome: Nella stamperia di Vitale Mascardi, 1640. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. 4to (240 x 165 mm). Pagination: [48], 1-376, [144]pp. Signatures: [dagger](8); 2[dagger]-5[dagger](4); A-AAA(4); *(4); a-p(4); q(6). Engraved title by C. Bloemaert after A. Camassei. 14 full-page engraved illustrations of mythological and muse-en-page subjects by C. Bloemart, G. F. Greuter and Fabia della Cornia, they reproduce drawings by A. and L. Magalotti, C. Massimi, F. Zuccaro and other well-known artists of the period. The portrait of the author (signed: Nic. Pucci, inv.) and the last engraving (p. 357), showing the god of love astride a horse in the sky, shooting his arrows into humans below, are after drawings by Nicolas Poussin. Woodcut ornamental chapter initials and tail-pieces. Edited by Federico Ubaldini. Near contemporary vellum, spine title gilt, edges stained blue; (a few text and illustration leaves remargined, some light browning). Modern armorial bookplate of Bibliotheque I.G. Schorsch on the front pastedown. First edition of the medieval verse work the Documenti d’Amore, literally “Documents of Love” but also rendered as the “Laws of Courtesy” or “Lessons of Love,” probably composed sometime between the years 1309 and 1313. Francesco da Barberino, Florentine lawyer and episcopal notary, wrote this tripartite work consisting of the allegorical poem in his native Italian, its literal Latin translation, and Latin glosses to teach good form within the “laws of love.” There are at least two extant medieval manuscripts of Barberino’s verse work and commentary. Barberino’s aim with this work was to collect and harmonize many diverse and discordant documents on love and expound on their ethical principles, as well as share common pitfalls (vices) in relationships in order to elevate the rewards of virtuous love. Barberino endeavored to reach the success of Justinian and Gratian as they were to Roman law and Canon law respectively. Notably, in a footnote in the Documenti d’Amore, Barberino made probably the earliest known reference to Giotto’s frescoes in the Arena Chapel when he spoke of the vice Envy. It is possible that Barberino saw the chapel in Padua before he left for notary work at the papal palace in Avignon and the Provencal courts in 1308. The Documenti seems to have been largely finished before his return to Italy in 1312, thus much of the commentary was written during Barberino’s time as a legal curate travelling through medieval royal courts of Southern France. This Rome edition was edited by Federico Ubaldini and included a life of the author, brief summary of the canzones, and a rich glossary of Barberino’s vocabulary. The Documenti d’Amore had long remained unprinted until this edition brought it to light in 1640. Ubaldini consulted the original manuscripts of the Documenti and was fascinated by the author’s accomplished miniatures. This edition incorporates 15 full-page muse-en-page scenes that are highly skilled works by famous Baroque artists and printmakers of Europe, including Bloemaert, Greuter, and after Poussin. This is a fascinating commentary on fourteenth century love and values and social chivalry, highly significant for the history of Italian culture. Landwehr 136. Praz, pp. 83-84 and 265.

Description
San Antonio, Tx: Incarnate Word, 1934. Good.. [4]pp. Folio. Previously folded, with some separation at fore-edge from central horizontal fold. Chipping at edges, affecting some text at corners and fore-edge. Browned, and a somewhat brittle. A scarce diatribe against the secular Mexican government, issued by Leopoldo Ruiz, the Archbishop of Morelia, from the safety of the Catholic University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio during late 1934. The text demonstrates the ongoing tensions and conflict between religious and government authorities in Mexico following the Cristero War in the late 1920s, the period of greatest violence between the two sides after the adoption of the Constitution of 1917. Ruiz was Pope Pius XI's direct representative in negotiations with the Mexican government to resolve their disagreements, but such was the animus of the parties that he was exiled in 1932, after which he settled in San Antonio, whence he published this screed addressed to the "bishopry, clergy, and Catholics of Mexico," in which accused the government of "revolutionary Socialism" that obligated the dutiful opposition of the Church. A very scarce San Antonio Spanish-language imprint; OCLC locates only a pair of microfiched copies of this text at Emory and BYU, with the origin of the original unclear.

Description
Athens: The University of Georgia Press, (2000). Oblong quarto, green cloth (hardcover), xxiv, 127 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Crackers in the Glade is a visually stunning account of bygone days in the Everglades. The largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the United States, the Everglades hold a unique place among all the world’s wetlands. Through his writings and illustrations, fisherman, guide, and self-taught artist Rob Storter transports us to the remote, half-wild frontier of southwest Florida in the early part of the twentieth century. There, the events of a day could range from a hurricane to a face-to-face encounter with a panther to the arrival of the latest packet from Key West. As Storter recalls his travels through the great swamp and its estuaries, he imparts an old-timer’s grasp of the fantastic array of plant and animal life the Everglades once supported. Looking back over a life closely linked to the water, he chronicles how mechanized methods eclipsed the more sustainable approach of fishing as the livelihood of locals who were attuned to natural cycles and worked by necessity on a small scale. Crackers in the Glade is also a story of family and community, of daily joys and setbacks. Here, Marilea Storter’s recollections, some of which are included in the book, add depth and detail. By turns the family doctor, cook, teacher, and moral anchor, Marilea held husband Rob and their children together through tough times when the best house they had was a tent and medical care consisted of castor oil and prayers. Rob Storter knew the Everglades before commercial fishing, real estate development, drainage projects, and tourism changed the region forever. Through his illustrations we can celebrate its wonders; through his writings we can contemplate the mixed benefits of progress and the responsibilities of stewardship.
