Description
His journey led him further northwest than any other English traveler had been before With the plate of the Tobacco plant Octavo. 8 ½ x 5 inches. Pp. [24], xvi, [17]-543, [1]. Complete with 2 folding maps and 5 engraved plates. Handsomly rebound in three-quarter black leather over marbled boards. Five raised bands on spine, blind embossed decoration and gilt lettering. One map hand colored. Early owner's signature at top of tile page. A fine and exceptionally clean copy with minor toning to the first two leaves. Second edition. Very scarce. This edition contains the two leaves of "Address to the Public" and the elusive, uncalled for, plate of the Tobacco plant. A classic narrative, unrivalled in the literature of early native American travel. Carver set out from Boston in 1766 to explore the territory beyond the Mississippi and to find a north-west passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. His 7,000 mile journey led him further northwest than any other English traveler had been before the Revolution. The work contains one of the earliest descriptions of what is now Minnesota and Wisconsin and the name "Oregon" appears in print here for the first time. Carver made important contributions to the mapping of the region and the knowledge of its natural history. His findings contributed to the geographical knowledge of the country and influenced Mackenzie and Lewis and Clark. Indian life and customs are described with great detail, particularly their methods of warfare. Included are short vocabularies of the Chippeway and Naudowessie languages. The folding maps include one of all of North America, and another showing, in detail, the headwaters of the Mississippi and the surrounding country, including lakes Michigan and Superior, and the land as far west as the Dakotas. [Graff: 622; Howes I: C-215; Howes II: C-218; Sabin: 11184; Streeter: 1772].

Kyūrō Gafu 九老画譜 Baitei Ki 梅亭紀 Ōmiya Shinbei 近江屋新兵, publisher Kansei 寛政 11 [1799] 26.2 x 18.6cm volume string-bound Japanese style, fukuro-toji with yellow wrappers and printed paper title label. The publisher is noted as Kyoto's Omiya Shinbei 近江屋新兵. In reference to the title, one of the artist Baitei’s pen names was Kyūrō Sanjin 九老九老山人. Resembles the copy 'c' in Mitchell for the presence of 64 single page original woodblock prints in sumi (a greater number of images than the first edition with poems, the poems being omitted and images added in all subsequent editions, including this one), yellow wrappers, the 2 page preface and Ryuga afterword with the date of 1797, but it has a colophon dating it to 1799 [Kansei 11]. See Mitchell pp 403. Baitei 梅亭紀 (1734-1810) was one of the most eminent of Buson’s students and this book is probably his finest - dynamic, fresh and understated all at the same time. Dirt staining to wrappers with a medallion pattern and printed paper title label. Another very interesting and seemingly early variant edition of this expanded inventory of 64 illustrations. In very good condition and good printing. An unusual work in the marketplace at this time.

Description
c1994. Handwritten working lyrics by Joey Ramone for the Steel Reserve commercial jingle "High Gravity Lager," 2pp (8 ½” x 11”), unsigned, in blue and black ballpoint on the versos only of two scrap pages with late 1993 dates (a Ramones interview request from Ray Gun Magazine and an order form from Eggbert Records). On the right side of the first sheet, Ramone adds a phone number and pens a few lines to the Adios Amigos song "She Dreams of Rainbows." Some light creasing and toning to the edges. Ex. Daniel Rey with a letter from him. "High Gravity Lager" was one of three commercial jingles the Ramones were commissioned to write for the Steel Brewing Company and their Steel Reserve lager, alongside "Gimme My Steel Reserve" and "Fill My Cup." These 1994 commissions arrived during the Ramones' final years as a touring band, a period when punk's original iconoclasts navigated the contradictions between their anti-commercial ethos and economic survival. Writing on verso of discarded ephemeral materials represents common creative practice across artistic disciplines where the urgency of composition occurs opportunistically on whatever materials are at hand when inspiration strikes. By the mid-1990s, the Ramones occupied a paradoxical cultural position: acknowledged as foundational figures whose minimalist aesthetic and three-chord template had shaped punk, hardcore, and alternative music, yet commercially operating through the same pragmatic strategies that sustained independent musicians. The manuscript's inclusion of lines to "She Dreams of Rainbows" from Adios Amigos (1995) complicates simple distinctions between artistic and commercial work.

[No Place]: [No Publisher], 1970. 4.25" x 5.5", single-sided handbill flyer. Good, horizontally creased, missing triangular chips at corners, wrinkled, toned. No other copies located in commerce or in institutional collections such as University of Washington's Vietnam War Era Ephemera Collection. A scarce piece of propaganda from the American anti-Vietnam War movement, demanding the freeing of the protestors that would become famous as The Seattle Seven. On February 17, 1970 the Seattle Liberation Front organized a protest of about 2,000 people against the imprisonment of the Chicago Seven including Black Panther Bobby Seale, converging on the Seattle federal courthouse. About 200 protestors chanting "Free Bobby!" attacked the building with rocks and paint and were reputedly tear-gassed by Seattle Police. Eight protestors would later be indicted: Jeff Dowd, Michael Abeles, Joe Kelly, Michael Lerner, Susan Stern, Roger Lippman, Chip Marshall, and Michael Justesen. Jutesen skipped town and was never found, so the group became known as The Seattle Seven. Most of the charges would eventually be dropped.Jeff Dowd, though, would become a film producer and later gain cult fame as an inspiration for "The Dude" in The Coen Brothers' 1998 film The Big Lebowski. Hence The Dude's lines, "Ever heard of the Seattle Seven? That was me. Well, me and six other guys." One was actually a lady, but otherwise the reference was quite real.

First Edition of the proceedings of the first international symposium on space medicine, summarizing research done in the United States from the end of World War II to November 1951. During this time the United States was starting to develop its space program, which had begun with the U.S.'s acquisition of German rocket technology and specialists after the defeat of the Nazis in 1945. One of the leaders of the U.S. space program was Wernher von Braun, the recipient of this copy, who had helped design the V-2 rocket in Nazi Germany; after coming to the United States, von Braun served as director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and was the chief architect of the Saturn V rocket that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon in 1969. Von Braun participated in the symposium, contributing a paper on "The return of a winged rocket vehicle from a satellite orbit to the Earth" (pp. 432-440); the paper consisted of a partial excerpt from von Braun's Das Marsprojekt (1952). Bound in original wraps, plain variation (that is, without the vignette that appears on most copies). Edition limited to 2500 copies on Alfa Mousse Navarre, this copy not numbered. INSCRIBED BY DE CHIRICO on front blank "A Monsieur Rudder, hommage de..." Published in the "Collection Bifur" series. Original glue fails to completely hold the wraps to the text block. Some very light toning at edges of preliminary leaves. De Chirico's seminal novel in its first edition, with a gift inscription from the author. The text is regarded as a monument of surrealistic prose, successfully translating the visual and emotional landscape of De Chirico's paintings into narrative form. John Ashbery calls the book "the finest work of Surrealist fiction," noting that de Chirico "invented for the occasion a new style and a new kind of novel… his language, like his painting, is invisible: a transparent but dense medium containing objects that are more real than reality.

Lancaster, Pa: Garden Seed Co. of America, 1944. Very good. 8½” x 5½”. Stapled pictorial self-wrappers. Pp. 40. Very good: small chip to lower edge of front wrap, a bit of soiling and tiny corner chip to rear; scattered faint small stains. This is a rare and lovely almanac holding a wealth of information aimed at female farmers for the year of 1945. Printed in black and white and splashes of red, the book's cover reveals “3 Famous Women” (Martha Washington, Clara Burton and Jane Addams), sketches of Joan of Arc and the everyday woman, feeding the chickens and spinning the yarn. One page is devoted to each month, providing the phases of the moon, “historical events,” predictions for the weather and the best dates for planting. Scattered throughout are helpful hints and tips on first aid, “care of woolens,” dream interpretation, “flag etiquette” and “Seven Rules for Naming the Baby.” It printed the winners of last year's “Prize Recipe Contest,” a few exhortations for prayer and one to “Buy U.S. War Bonds.” There are also countless entertaining ads, many of them illustrated, for jewelry, cash prize contests, beauty regimens and love spells, “Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound” for “Women in Your 40's,” piano lessons, life insurance, a “Windmill Weather Forecaster” and the “Keys to Power,” “revealed at last.” Not recorded in OCLC, which shows only the Farm Woman's Almanac for 1946, at the Henry Ford Museum.

Author Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz situates New York slam poetry in the history of oral tradition in poetry throughout history and around the world, with particular attention to the three major 20th century arts movements that helped set the stage for it: the Harlem Renaissance, the Beats, and hip hop. Aptowicz explores the birth of slam at the Nuyorican Poets' Café and the genre's explosive growth as the media responded with events like Lollapalooza and MTV's Unplugged. The book expands the canvas by examining the connections between academia and slammers, especially the poets of color, the youth slammers, and the burgeoning hip hop poetry scene. Interviews with key players like Chicago's Marc Smith and San Francisco's Gary Mex Glazner help tell this fascinating story from the inside.(Publisher).
