Description
Amsterdam, 1717. No Binding. Near Fine. Each 23 x 18 1/2 in. Superb original color; excellent condition; each sheet museum-mounted & framed. A superb pair in fine original color. "This beautiful map . . . is probably the most detailed delineation of the coastline from the Carolinas to Labrador drawn in the 17th century. It appears primarily as a separate, but also is included in a few Visscher atlases. . . . The cartography of the Atlantic seacoast is exceptional for the period . . . " On the Map fig. 28. This was also the first, Dutch map of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions that broke from the Jansson-Visscher prototype. As can be seen in the improved shapes of Long Island and other areas, it incorporated English sources. Present on the map is the Eastham Cut, the strait bisecting Cape Cod that began to appear on English charts of the late 17th century. Notable also is the remarkable miniaturization of its engraving of place names. The adjoining sheet of the Canadian maritime area is a very precisely engraved map that includes all of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Grand Banks. Burden II, 731 State 3; McCorkle 689.8 (dating the map 1715).

Description
Manilla, Philippine Islands, 1898. Very good. The Bounding Billow. Published in the Interests of American Men-O’-Warsmen. Volume I, issue 5. Edited by L. S. Young. Printed by H. B. Glover aboard the U. S. Flagship Olympia on captured Spanish paper. Manila, Philippine Islands, June 1898. 16 pages. 6.5” x 8”. Uncut sheet. The front cover features a colorful patriotic vignette with a U.S. flag, a Naval Jack, National Eagle, the Liberty Bell, gun barrels, and olive branches with text reading, “The Battle of Manila Bay. / ‘We Came! We Saw! We Conquered!’ / ‘Twas for Cuba and our honor, to avenge our heroes slain, / That victory wreathed our banner when we fought the ships of Spain.” Horizontal fold and a few splits along some of the uncut folds. The rear cover features a map of Manila Bay that was made by crew member L.C. Passano, "who, with indomitable energy and a couple of sail needles, made it after a number of failures. . . . Without a doubt it is the first thing of the kind done on a man-o'-war, and taking into consideration the difficulties under which our artist labored, it can pose as a work of art." Contents include eyewitness accounts of the battle and several poems. . On 1 May 1898, Admiral George Dewey completely destroyed the Spanish fleet that was defending Manila, and the 1st California Infantry and the 2nd Oregon Infantry Regiments occupied the city after ‘fighting’ a pre-arranged, choreographed ‘battle’ that allowed the Spanish Army to maintain a semblance of honor. Subsequently, some Filipinos declared themselves independent in January of 1899, but later that April, the United States proclaimed sovereignty of the islands. Over the following year, U. S. forces fought and subdued the Philippine rebels, after which William Howard Taft was appointed to serve as governor. At the time of listing, no other examples are for sale in the trade. OCLC shows 16 examples in institutional collections. The Rare Book Hub reports that only six examples have been sold at auction and estimates this pamphlet’s current market value at $995. .

Description
Sofia: Stopansko Razvitie, 1947. First edition; 8 x 10 3/4; pp. [7], 8-17, [47]; original beige wraps with red title; several spots to front cover and some age-toning; closed cut to tail of spine; internally clean; illustrated with full-page and in-line monochrome photographs; few words underlined in pencil; overall very good. Published on June 18, 1947 by the Bulgarian Ministry of Arts and Information - the book was a tribute to Georgi Dimitrov on his 65th birthday. He led the Comintern from 1934 to 1943 and was the first Communist leader of Bulgaria from 1946 to 1949. In 1926, fleeing a death sentence for leading an uprising against Alexander Tsankov (then Prime Minister of Bulgaria and leader of the Democratic Alliance), Dimitrov settled in Germany. He was arrested in Berlin in 1933 for allegedly conspiring to set the Reichstag on fire. His infamous Leipzig Trial followed, in which his self-defense, calm demeanor, and eventual release were regarded as legendary in Communist Bulgaria. The commemorative book contains an 11-page biographical feature followed by 47 glossy pages of photographs, including many with various dignitaries such as Joseph Stalin, Mikhail Kalinin, Maxim Gorky, Viacheslav Molotov, and Kliment Voroshilov. There are also facsimiles of documents from the famous trial. No copies in OCLC or the trade.
