Description
Okayama, 1925. Very good.. [15]pp. Old fold lines, minor wear. With original envelope. Lengthy letter written by Mrs. C. Burnell Olds to a friend and donor back in Connecticut, Mrs. Nathan S. Bronson. Okayama is located to the west of Osaka and Kyoto, in the southern portion of the country; Mrs. Olds was born to a missionary family stationed in Japan, and had worked in that country since 1903. In her letter, Olds relates her current round of activities, the ways in which Mrs. Bronson's funds have been of great use, and the other activities she observes and participates in within the local community. She opens recounting a visit to the True Beauty Girls' School, to which Mrs. Bronson has donated. She writes, "The fact that an American woman was willing to give to a non-Christian school way over here in Japan has made a great impression here in Okayama." She goes on to discuss the building of a new church by some "earnest young men," briefly noting that they still need money to furnish the church. "We are very anxious to start some kind of social work here -- if possible to open an amusement hall where young men can come to have a good time in a good way -- with good women. There is no such place in our city, and how many evil resorts there are." She relates further activities, an endless stream of clubs and activities and teaching efforts for the Lord, closing with family news. An interesting missive, chock full of information on a local missionary's efforts in 1920s Japan.

Description
London: T. Bensley, 1795. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Scarce. This edition is printed in Greek and Latin. Bion ( onos) was an ancient Greek bucolic poet from Smyrna, probably active at the end of the second or beginning of the first century BC. He is named in the Suda as one of three canonical bucolic poets alongside Theocritus and Moschus. One long poem about Adonis and seventeen shorter fragments of his poetry survive. Moschus (Moschou) was an ancient Greek bucolic poet and student of the Alexandrian grammarian Aristarchus of Samothrace. He was born at Syracuse and flourished about 150 BC. Aside from his poetry, he was known for his grammatical work, nothing of which survives. Theocritus (early third century BCE), born in Syracuse and also active on Cos and at Alexandria, was the inventor of the bucolic genre. Like his contemporary Callimachus, Theocritus was a learned poet who followed the aesthetic, developed a generation earlier by Philitas of Cos (LCL 508), of refashioning traditional literary forms in original ways through tightly organized and highly polished work on a small scale (thus the traditional generic title Idylls: "little forms")[Wikipedia]. The editor, George Hamilton Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen (1784-1860), was a writer on Greek classical architecture and a future British Prime Minister. The book was described as: "A beautiful and correct edition, by the late Gilbert Wakefield, and printed with great care and delicacy by Bensley, but without accents, for which omission it has been much censured, and for which reason it never sold. The work is commended by foreign critics." [Thomas Frognall Dibdin] Bound in red leather with a faded spine with rubbing to gilt titling. Bumping and soiling to covers. All edges gilt. Red dentelles with gilt ornament design. Hinges are slightly cracked but text block is firm. Browning and spotting to front and particularly the rear endpapers with darker browning along margins of hinges. Tear to front free endpaper.Text pages are generally clean with light aging to margins. Very good condition. Measures 6.5 x 9.5 inches. Pages: (8) + 33 + (82). POE/072123.

Description
Secacus NJ: Citadel Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1985). First Edition. Hardcover. 0806509767 . [minimal shelfwear, a tiny trace of foxing to top of text block; jacket lightly rubbed, minor edgewear, soft vertical crease at bottom of front panel]. (B&W photographs) "A complete account of Howard Hughes's career as a film mogul," a spotty track record that includes such classics as HELL'S ANGELS, SCARFACE and THE OUTLAW (all of which are discussed at some length) and such turkeys as MAD WEDNESDAY (aka THE SIN OF HAROLD DIDDLEBOCK), VENDETTA and THE CONQUEROR. (Come to think of it, I should have included THE OUTLAW with the turkeys, too.) About a third of the book is devoted to Hughes's stewardship (if that's the right word) of RKO Studios, which he ran from 1948 until 1955, selling it off after having pretty much delivered it to death's doorstep. The book concludes with a brief chapter called "Hollywood Afterlife," which discusses Hughes's post-RKO years and also a few of the cinematic depictions of the increasingly reclusive (and wacko) mogul. .
