Bracciano: [Privately Printed by] Andreas Phaeus, 1626 to, 1630. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. An excellent copy. Bound in contemporary vellum, lacking ties (a few wormholes to the lower cover, small puncture and a little rumpling along the fore-edge of the upper cover.) Complete with the errata leaf and blanks F4, R6 & 4I6 (b3 bound after c2, few small tears, a some scattered toning and foxing, a few inconsequential blemishes). With an early German manuscript shelf label – “M.W.” (19th-century bookplate with coronet). Illustrated with an engraved allegorical frontispiece, fine engraved portrait of Paolo Giordano Orsini Duke of Bracciano with dedication, engraved vignette on printed title, & many fine engraved illustrations in the text (many full-page) depicting the author’s observations of sunspots, his observational platform (with his assistants busily working), his telescopes and helioscopes of his own design. Scheiner’s greatest work. This magnificent book, along with Hevelius’ lunar atlas, “Selenographia”, is one of the two most richly and superbly illustrated astronomy book published in the first half of the 17th century.  It describes and depicts Scheiner’s observations of sunspots and showcases his instruments, including his Keplerian telescope and his helioscope. In 1611, Scheiner constructed a telescope with which he began to make astronomical observations, and in March of that year, he detected the presence of spots on the sun.  Scheiner’s claim to the discovery of sun spots, independently of Galileo, was the origin of one of the most famous and heated controversies in the history of science.  This book contains the summation of Scheiner’s observations of the sun, the fruit of many years of observation and study.  He confirmed his method and criticized Galileo for failing to mention the inclination of the axis of rotation to the plane of the ecliptic. Yet he finally agreed with Galileo that sunspots are on the Sun's surface or in its atmosphere (rather than satellites), that they are often generated and perish there, and that the Sun is therefore not perfect. Scheiner further advocated a fluid heavens (against the Aristotelian solid spheres), and he pioneered new ways of representing the motions of spots across the Sun's face. Because shortly after the appearance of Rosa Ursina sunspot activity decreased drastically (the so-called Maunder Minimum, ca. 1645-1710), his work was not superseded until well into the eighteenth century. Scheiner was responsible for many advances and innovations in the design of telescopes and related instruments. Of great importance is Scheiner’s creation of a special helioscope, described here, the first Keplerian telescope in use, consisting of two convex lenses; it was also the first to use colored glass in the eyepiece (Kepler himself had only considered the telescope theoretically.) Scheiner is also known for having invented the pantograph and for establishing the retina as the seat of vision. The quality of the engravings in this book is exceptional.  Not only the complete instruments but also their component parts, lenses, fittings, etc. are depicted in these engravings. Rosa Ursina sive Sol was costly to produce. Scheiner originally sought the support of Cardinal Alessandro Orsini (1592-1626), who was close to the Jesuits, and after Alessandro’s death, that of his brother, Paolo Giordano II, Duke of Bracciano, a great patron of astronomy. Rosa Ursina sive Sol was thus published at Bracciano on the Duke’s private press, though over several years (1626-30) due to financial difficulties. The book, starting with its title, is replete with references to the Orsini family whose heraldry included the rose and the bear (orsus = ursus = bear). Given the strained relations with Paolo Giordano II, who was unwilling to pay for the book, these references to the Orsini family quickly became obsolete. Depicting the Astronomical Observatory and Methods of Observing Sunspots: On page 150 there is a remarkable, full-page engraving with two scenes of astronomers at work. The first shows a viewing terrace, outfitted with two obelisks and a number of figures using astronomical instruments, including a helioscope and a telescope. Three figures may be identified as Jesuits from their distinctive birettas. One is at the foot of the obelisk measuring the position of the reflected sunspot against a plumb line (at M) with a compass. The second image, an interior scene, shows Scheiner and his assistant at work in his study, which has astrolabes and a quadrant on the walls. This plate illustrates seven methods of observing sunspots: 1) the simplest and most natural way of observation is to let the Sun (at F) shine through a bare opening of a ball (at G) into a dark place where a paper is held perpendicularly and on which a figure is formed (at H). 2) another simple form of observation is to let the Sun (at Q) shine through a convex glass (at R) onto a chart (at S). 3) the simplest and most natural way of observation is with the naked eye (at P) when the Sun is at the horizon (at I). 4) observation of the Sun (at E) through a helioscope (at D). 5) observation of the Sun (at B) behind a cloud (at C) through a telescope (at A). 6) observation of the Sun (at I) by a reflection (at LN) by a plane mirror (at K). This is a method that Scheiner initially used at Ingolstadt. 7) observation of the Sun where its ray (V) through a helioscopic tube (at X) is projected onto paper in the circle Y contained in the perimeter cfdg. This method is described as ‘the most excellent, the most secure and the easiest’ method of observation which Scheiner used at Ingolstadt from 1612, as well as at Rome. The Christogram ‘IHS’ adopted by the Jesuits as their emblem, may be seen at the top of one of the obelisks, and the rose of the Orsini family may be found on the edge of the roundel and elsewhere. On the side of a stool on which a telescope and sundial rest, is the signature of the engraver, Daniel Widman. The quotation at the top of the image is from Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis historia II.112, where Eratosthenes’s estimate of the circumference of Earth is described as ‘an audacious venture, but achieved by such subtle reasoning that one is ashamed to be sceptical.'.

Philadelphia, 1831. No binding. Fine. Map of the United States. Entered according to Act of Congress in the Clerks Office of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, October 10th, 1831. [Philadelphia], 1831. Folding map on four sheets joined. Folding into original covers, 8vo (binding size: 9 5/8 x 6 1/2 in.), red half morocco over marbled paper boards, upper cover with gilt-lettered title label (corner and edges worn). The map and covers now apart and separately mounted for display. Historical BackgroundFirst edition, and the first wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first ""original"" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834.ReferenceKarrow 1-1473; Ristow p309.ConditionOriginal full color, the palette rich and bright. One 5-inch repaired tear at left (into Arkansas), some cracking and more minor tears at folds. Some overall browning of the sheet. In good condition.

New title and final pages were supplied to buyers of the 1848 set, and binders were instructed to rebind the work into a single set of six volumes bound separately, plus an index volume of persons and places. Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood, T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1819. Volume 1 with half-title, frontispiece, engraved title vignette, 3 plates and 18 pages publisher’s advertisements; Volume 2 with half-title, engraved title vignette and 3 plates; Volume 3 with half-title, engraved title vignette, 3 plates, 1 text engraving and 1 page publisher’s advertisements. Grey cloth-backed boards with paper spine labels; some light occasional interior spotting. Uncut; ownership inscription to fly-leaf of volume 1. Second edition, although there is some confusion; apparently the title page to the first edition is printed with “second edition.” The title to this edition states “third edition,” though sources often list it as the second edition. Written under the pseudonym Peter Morris, this book apparently stirred up a bit of a scandal when it was published, as it satirized many of Edinburgh’s prominent figures of the day. Lockhart (1794-1845) was a biographer and novelist who was perhaps best known for his massive seven-volume biography of his father in law, Sir Walter Scott. He was contributing editor for the highly controversial Blackwood’s magazine and was involved in many projects with its publisher, William Blackwood, publisher of the present work. Description
11/09/1833. Scott, who spoke French, admits that France provided the U.S. Army systems: “Our system is founded on that of France originally published in 1791”Scott fought on the Niagara frontier in the War of 1812, was captured by the British in that campaign during the Battle of Queenston Heights in 1813, but was released in a prisoner exchange. In March 1814 Scott was brevetted brigadier general. In July 1814, Scott commanded the First Brigade of the American army in the Niagara campaign, winning the Battle of Chippewa decisively on July 5, 1814.. He was wounded during the American defeat at the Battle of Lundy's Lane (july 25), along with the American commander, Major General Jacob Brown and the British/Canadian commander, Lieutenant General Gordon Drummond. As the American army retreated across the Niagara, Scott commanded the American forces at Fort Erie, another American victory. Scott's success on the Niagara, combined with American naval victories at Lake Champlain and Lake Erie, guaranteed a stalemate on the northern frontier. Scott's wounds from Lundy's Lane were so severe that he did not serve on active duty for the remainder of the war. But his successes had made him a national hero.Scott remained in military service after the war, studying tactics in Europe and taking a deep interest in maintaining a well-trained and disciplined U.S. Army. He earned the nickname of ""Old Fuss and Feathers"" for his insistence of military appearance and discipline. In his own campaigns, General Scott preferred to use a core of U.S. Army Regulars rather than volunteers whenever possible. In 1841, he became commanding general of the United States Army, and served in that capacity until 1861.Scott’s interest in tactics and instruction led to his supervising the preparation of the first standard drill regulations for the Army. He served as president of Board of Tactics in 1815 three times. He visited Europe to study French military methods in 1815/1816, and translated several military manuals of Napoleon into English. He wrote the standard army manual in 1825, entitled “Infantry tactics, or, rules for the exercise and manoeuvres of the United States infantry”. Scott again visited Europe in 1828, and in 1830 published  “Abstract of Infantry Tactics.” In 1835, he published his most complete and significant work on American tactics - the authoritative “Infantry Tactics”.Roger ap Catesby Jones served with Scott in the War of 1812. He had caught the eye of General Jacob Brown, who brought Jones into his staff as his assistant adjutant general prior to his 1814 Niagara campaign. As Brown’s adjutant, it was Jones’s responsibility to collect and retain records, determine and detail casualties, manage correspondence, work with or supervise the other adjutants, and see to it that significant information and statistics were reported back to the War Department in Washington. In his capacity as adjutant to the commanding general, he came to know Scott, and the men began a lifetime friendship.Jones fought conspicuously on July 5, 1814 in the victory at Chippewa, and was personally commended by Brown for his performance at the Battle of Lundy's Lane on July 25. For these, he won a brevet promotion to major. He next served at the defense of Fort Erie on August 14, and received commendation from General Edmund Gaines. A month later, on September 17, he was involved in the sortie from Fort Erie, and performed so well he was given a brevet promotion to lieutenant colonel. Meanwhile, Jones prepared and sent reports of killed and wounded in the Niagara campaign to the War Department in Washington. He retained the originals of the reports and some copies for his own records as Adjutant General in the field. You know that our system is founded on that of France originally published in 1791, from which time down to 1831 it had undergone not a single change. In 1815, after the war, Brown had Jones join him as aide-de-camp and adjutant general. In 1818 Jones became a brevet colonel and then accompanied Brown on a tour of the Northwest defenses. In March 1825 he was appointed Adjutant General of the U.S. Army, a post he held for a record 27 years until his death. He was brevetted brigadier general in June 1832, and major general in May 1848.As the Army's overall chief of staff during that period, Jones was responsible for recruiting, training and administration. He worked with the Army's commanding general, which until 1828 was Brown. After a period of contention with Brown's successor, the top general's post was assumed by Jones's trusted friend and colleague Winfield Scott, who had fought with him in Canada, and they worked closely together to maintain the autonomy of the Army from bureaucratic intrigues. The Jones era is remembered for the reforms he introduced that modernized the Army. He died on July 15, 1852. President Fillmore was among the notables to attend his funeral.Autograph letter signed, New York, September 11, 1833, to Jones, as he prepared to write his magnum opus, “Infantry Tactics”. ""Have you the charge of the remaining copies of The Infantry Tactics, or the means for saying how many copies are on hand for this distribution? I suppose the edition of 1825 to be nearly exhausted, and that a new one will, in a year or less, be required. You know that our system is founded on that of France originally published in 1791, from which time down to 1831 it had undergone not a single change. In the latter year, however, a new & much improved edition was published under the auspices of Marshal Soult. I have a copy & and think of translating it for the government. Not a principle or a word of command has been changed. The great improvements consist in the suppression of some evolutions, the addition of others, & more perfect details. The work has been rendered admirable in all its parts, and should be translated by one & the same hand. In the translation it will be easy to embody the changes which our peculiar organization render necessary. I shall address the Secretary on the subject after hearing from you in reply to the question put above. In the meantime please say nothing of my purpose."" Jones has docketed and signed this on the verso. With its free franked envelope by Scott included.Scott was already contemplating a new work in this letter, but clearly felt that to get the bureaucrats to sanction paying for one, he would need to show that copies of the earlier edition, published in 1825, were gone. His argument must have worked, as in 1835 his famous “Infantry Tactics” was indeed published. This letter was part of the Roger Jones papers we have acquired, and has never before been offered for sale.

The lecture was republished in the United States in the April 1937 issue of Harpers Magazine, and again in a volume of essays published by Methuen in London and Doubleday in New York. Wells had a vision for ". . .a sort of mental clearing house for the mind, a depot where knowledge and ideas are received, sorted, summarized, digested, clarified and compared," and believed that technological advances such as microfilm could be utilized towards this end so that "any student, in any part of the world, would be able to sit with his projector in his own study at his or her convenience to examine any book, any document, in an exact replica." Aspects of Wells's vision were eventually realized on the Internet through the Wikipedia in ways that Wells could not have imagined. W. Boyd Raward, "H.G. Wells's Idea of a World Brain: A Critical Reassment," Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 50 (1999) 557-573. .

Description
New York: H.H. Randall, 1855. First edition. Printed self wraps, stitched at spine. Measuring 220 x 140mm and complete in 64 pages. Some rubbing along spine, and scattered foxing to preliminary and terminal leaves; toned throughout, else clean. A scarce piece sensationalizing the tragic affairs and subsequent suicides of Sarah and Maria Williams, OCLC reports fewer than twenty copies with libraries, with this being the only example on the market. We've been unable to determine whether the tragic story of the Williams twins is, in fact, historically true. What is clear whether the narrative is fiction or non-fiction, is that the damage caused to women and their lives as a result of their social positions and sex had a wide audience and attracted a variety of readers -- some who hoped to judge the parties involved, some who sought the experience of empathy and catharsis, some with prurient fantasies, and some who simply wanted a thrill. According to this story, Sarah and Maria Williams were firstborn daughters to a loving and prosperous middle-class New York family and that like any "perfect victims," they combined "sincerity, kindness, and judgement" with "the bloom of loveliness, grace, and innocence." Chaste and well behaved in their boarding-school days, their lives took a turn at twenty. During their father's extended absence on business, Maria began receiving visits from Mr. Knight, an insidious but well-recommended brother of an old schoolmate. Seduced by him into a fraudulent marriage, Maria is ultimately separated from her family and forced into sex work for his profit. Rising eventually to "a high position among those of her kind...as a prostitute of superior grade," Maria operated on her own and refused to return to the Williams household despite Sarah's urgining; being degraded by her old neighbors and parents when she could be respected by her own was too much to bear. Sarah's insistence on maintaining a relationship with her twin and visiting her disreputable home led to her own reputation being cast into doubt. And when Sarah's intended eventually fell for, engaged in keeping, and ultimately got pregnant Maria, all participants in the affair ended their own lives. In many ways, the sensationalized stories of these twins reveal how no woman is safe and how no woman can rely on her chastity to protect her socially. Though Maria and Sarah were identical and took opposite paths, their violent ends wind up being identical and equally scandalous.

Description
Providence: Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design, 1969. Minor rubbing to illustrated wrappers; near fine. An uncommon work to feature Warhol's signature.. First Edition. Octavo. Catalogue from the landmark exhibition Raid the Icebox 1, conceived by Dominique de Menil and the Director of the RISD Museum of Art, Daniel Robbins, as the first in a series of artist-curated shows that pulled from the invisible collections housed in the Museum's vaults. Andy Warhol’s iteration would be the only such show realized; premiering at the Institute for the Arts, Rice University (Houston, Oct. 29, 1969 - Jan. 4, 1970), before traveling to the Isaac Delgado Museum (New Orleans, Jan. 17 - Feb. 15, 1970) and concluding at RISD (Apr. 23 - Jun. 30, 1970). The well-designed catalogue, featuring texts from de Menil, Robbins, and David Bourdon, documents 404 of the exhibited objects; further illustrated after Warhol's atmospheric Polaroids. This copy remarkably INSCRIBED to title page by both Warhol and Robbins to Eleanor Freed—an art critic for The Houston Post and local patron—likely at the exhibition's Houston premiere, at which Warhol was present.

New York: The Platt & Munk Co., Inc., Publishers, 1930. Cloth. Near fine. Lois L. LENSKI. Lois L. LENSKI, illustrator. Second issue. 8vo; [22]pp; red cloth over board, color pictorial onlay featuring a train on a track and black lettering; "Never Grow Old Series" list before half-title includes nine titles ending with The Little Engine That Could and a two-line statement on the front paste-down begins with "No. 358 Made in U.S.A."; both b&w and color illustrations throughout; rubbed corners, minimal shelf wear, lacking its dust jacket; near fine. This is a wonderful children's book whose famous line "I think I can, I think I can" has been beloved and encouragement to its readers for generations. This book has a very complicated edition issue history. We have used several sources and found that Zielinski's online "Children's Picturebook Collecting" is helpful for modern titles. Our research indicates that this copy is the first one to have a dust jacket (lacking on this example) and a paste-down on the front cloth board. The earlier editions in the "Never Grow Old Series" had a presentation box and no dust jacket, a paste-down image on the front blue board, and a black cloth spine. The points listed above in the book description are important in the identification of the edition. The book also has a long and complicated history in regard to authorship. Platt and Munk published it under the pseudonym, Watty Piper, for author Arnold Munk (1888-1957), one of the publishing company's owners.

Description
Vienne (Vienna): M. Auer, 1855. Very good. First edition in French (translated and published in the same year as the original Russian); 10 1/2 x 7; pp. 1-25, [7]; green wraps, printed and ruled in black; illustrated with three plates by Jos. Stoufs; lacking portrait frontis, else complete; tiny, white label to upper left corner; faint, discolored spot to margin of front wrap; small chips to tips of spine and slight curling to corners; scattered foxing, mostly to margins and verso of plates; in about very good- condition. Published anonymously, the booklet was allegedly written by Count Dmitrii Nikolaevich Bludov, alt. Dimitri Bloudoff (1785 - 1864) - a Russian noble, imperial official, and a member of the inner circle of Emperor Nicholas I. Over time, Bludov served as Minister of Justice, Minister of the Interior, Chairman of the State Council, and President of the Academy of Sciences. He was also a historian, author, founder of the Arzamas Literary Society, close friend of Turgenev, Karamzin, and Zhukovskii, and legal advisor to Nicholas, writing many of his speeches, editing the Code of Laws of the Russian Empire in 1841-1842, drafting a new Criminal Code in 1845, and presiding over the court that condemned the Decembrists to death. The book gave the official version of Emperor Nicholas' death, i.e. pneumonia resulting from an untreated cold, touting his unwavering Christian values and refuting the circulating speculations that the ruler had committed suicide, while the Crimean War was raging.
