The four volumes housed in two burnt orange morocco-backed cloth clamshell boxes with gilt lettering on the backs. Red and blue initials, ONE FULL-PAGE AND EIGHT HALF-PAGE WOOD ENGRAVINGS, AND 267 VERY PLEASING WOOD-ENGRAVED BORDERS (frequently inhabited) AND TAILPIECES BY ERIC GILL (each border design repeated two to five times, so that nearly every page is thus adorned). Chanticleer 63; Gill 281. Spines softly sunned--though uncharacteristically very minor and uniform in the fading; otherwise faultless. AN EXEMPLARY COPY, PRISTINE INTERNALLY. This is as fine a copy as one could hope to find of one of the best examples in modern fine press work of the successful collaboration of text, decoration, and typography. With the "Four Gospels" of 1931 and "Troilus and Criseyde" of 1927, it is one of the three greatest Golden Cockerel Press books, and according to Cave & Mason, its "naughty, amusing" engravings make it one of the five "foremost English illustrated books of the 20th century." It was produced at the zenith of the decade-long collaboration between Golden Cockerel Press director and book designer Robert Gibbings (1889-1958) and artist Eric Gill (1882-1940) which, in the words of Gill biographer Fiona McCarthy, "resulted in some of the classic examples of specialist book production of that period," works that "have a forcefulness and clarity which still excites one." While some squeamish critics deemed Gill's racy engravings inappropriate, the bawdy Chaucer would no doubt have been delighted with them and found them most apt. Colin Franklin astutely observed that the "Gill/Gibbings version [of 'Canterbury Tales'] tackled the problems of illustrating Chaucer IN ALL HIS MOODS. [emphasis in original]." Cave & Mason report that its publication was "regarded as a literary event" and was widely reported and well received by the press. The book was very profitable, grossing some £14,000 for the Press. It is to be expected that a major production from a major press like the Golden Cockerel "Tales" would in many cases be very well treated by owners down through the years, but copies now are almost never found in the immaculate condition seen here..

Phillip Ramey is an American composer and writer and was one of Paul Bowles' closest friends towards the end of the author's life. Ramey was for many years the annotator and program editor at the New York Philharmonic and has written the liner notes to hundreds of recordings, as well as a biography of the composer Irving Fine. His Horn Concerto was commissioned by the NY Philharmonic to celebrate their 150th anniversary. Ramey continues to compose and write and is in the process of overseeing the recording of his piano works. Ramey was first introduced to Paul Bowles in 1969 by Aaron Copland and later became a close friend and neighbor of the author, renting Jane Bowles' former apartment in Tangier. Ramey was an important friend and ally of Bowles in his later years, helping to care for his friend as his health deteriorated and protecting the often besieged author from the various journalists and fanatics that would show up at his Tangier home. Scroll (240 x 8260 mm.), with explanatory text in a fine calligraphic hand, inner front endpaper richly flecked with gold, outer side covered in golden silk brocade, wooden core roller. [Japan]: late Edo. A fine picture scroll depicting the famous story of Kengaku and Hanahime, a story that can be traced back to the 11th century and has many variations. It has maintained great acclaim, and is widely encountered to this day in theater and popular culture. “Dōjōji emaki is a picture scroll depicting the story Hidakagawa-soshi (also known as Kengaku-soshi), which is a variant of the legend of Anchin and Kiyohime that is also depicted in kabuki and ningyo-joruri (bunraku). The story tells of a Buddhist monk at the Mitsui temple, named Kengaku, who falls in love at first sight with a princess from a wealthy family in the Hashimoto region of Enshu (present day Shizuoka Prefecture). After corresponding for a time, the two eventually betrothed. Kengaku, however, eventually realizes that the princess is the girl he thought he had killed in the past, and this realization causes him to suddenly abandon her. The princess chases Kengaku, but her grief transforms her into a giant snake. Finally, after discovering Kengaku hidden in a temple bell, she drags him out and together they sink to the bottom of the Hidaka River. This emaki was quite popular during the Edo period, and many copies appear to have been produced.”–National Diet Library webpage. In a series of ten finely rendered scenes, often with accompanying calligraphic text, we see the love affair of Kengaku and Hanahime disintegrate, her transformation into an angry serpent-dragon, her murder of her former lover, and the couple’s later attainment of Buddhahood. Description: 1937. Wraps. Very Good. A beautiful, and colorful, catalog of tin boxes. 47 pp. The tins are decorated in a multitude of styles, with Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Indian) influences particularly strong, but also Regency, deco-ish and other styles popular at the time evident in some tins. The leaves are printed only on the recto sides. Some of the tin images are mounted, others are printed directly onto the leaf. The mounted tins appear to be of very thin tin and thus particularly authentic representations of the actual tins. The tins could be used in a multitude of ways, but with the strong Orientalist element in the design, tea caddies were surely the most common use back when. Below the illustrations are dimensional, price and other descriptive text. A scarce trade catalog, with none located on OCLC. Light soiling to the wraps. The mounted tins have a tendency now to curl at the base. Bound with ribbon and a short string attached to the top.
