Description
Leipzig: Hesse & Becker, 1927. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Octavo. 159 (1)pp. Original yellow cloth with modern b/w design and typography in photo-illustrated dustjacket, white lettering on spine. Red top edge. Gray endpapers. Publisher's device on title page. Dustjacket and cover design by Walter Dexel. The b/w photographs on the verso of title page with Heinrich Zille quote: "You can kill a human with an apartment just as you can kill him with an ax!" The volume is dedicated to Heinrich Zille. In his foreword Behne emphasizes the fact that the lack of apartments in Germany is a political problem on one hand and a technical problem on the other, offering a third view: the cultural-artistic view. "Our book now, it doesn't offer prescriptions, places the human into the center of the work. The title doesn't say "New building - New Living," it's the other way around, because we want to say, the building depends on living, which means it depends on the human. With that said it becomes clear that when we talk about the artistic we don't mean the appearance." The chapters in the book: The Copernican Turn, Dictatorship or Objectivity, The Immortal Knight, Grandiose Cabinet and Cleaning Appliances, Building and Human, The Tenement as the Last Knight's Castle, Good Solutions –Beginnings. The book is profusely illustrated with b/w photographs, reproductions of artwork and architectural plans. It contains a section with photographic juxtapositions of examples and counterexamples and a bibliography at rear. Text in German, Gothic script. Dustjacket with light wear along edges, small chips and rubbed. Binding with light discoloration along edges and spine. Block very lightly age-toned. Dustjacket in overall good, interior in very good condition.

Description
Moscow: Journal "Pravoslavnoie Obozrieniie, 1880. First edition. Hardcover. vg. 4to. 164pp. Original slate paper wrappers printed with black Russian and Church Slavonic lettering and decorative design, rebound in modern brown cloths. Marked as a first issue of a cycle, but subsequent issues were never released. Subtitled, "teoriia provslavnago tserkovnago pieniia voobschie, po ucheniiu ellinskikh i vizantiiskikh pisateleii [the general theory of Orthodox church singing, according to the teachings of the Hellenic and the Byzantine writers]." Scholarly music theory publication, authored by Yuri Karlovich Arnold, an important 19th century Russian music theorist, composer, and critic, particularly famous for his academic research into Russian church music. In the preface, Arnold states, "My book is a first approach towards a strictly-scientific and accoustically developed treatment of the melodic and the harmonic underpinnings of ancient Russian church and folk singing... The entire purpose of my approach is to prove that both our church and our folk singing essentially originates in ancient Hellenic teachings..." Arnold's study is replete with citations, musical notation, and ample references to Greek and Slavonic material. There are four foldouts of extensive charts, the first one with a movable element sliding up and down in the middle. Text in Russian, with extensive Church Slavonic and Greek. Verso of original wrapper beautifully inscribed by Arnold, with a dedication and an 8-line poem in German. Front of wrapper signed by previous owner. Minor discoloration to wrappers. Interior overall clean, with some pencilled German translations of chapter headings. One fold-out chart disconnected, but both sides present. Ex-libris of Hebrew Union College on inside of front rebound board. Tight copy in overall very good condition.

Description
London: Printed for Callow and Wilson, 1824. Fourth Edition. 235 x 145 mm. (9 1/4 x 5 3/4"). xvii, [1], 568 pp. Publisher's gray paper boards, flat spine with printed paper label, leaves untrimmed. WITH TWO ENGRAVED PLATES, one folding. Early ink ownership inscription of Jas. McKee on title page. Wellcome III, p. 462; Garrison-Morton 3587 (5th Edition); Heirs of Hippocrates 822 (Second Edition). Spine and boards a bit darkened, covers with a hint of soiling, occasional light foxing, a few closed tears (not affecting text), other trivial defects, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, the insubstantial binding with nothing approaching a significant defect, and the text remarkably bright, clean, and fresh.Still in its original boards and in lovely condition, this extensive treatise on the causes and treatment of hernias was written by an English surgeon known as a radical precursor of Darwinian attitudes towards the nature and development of man. One of our author's earliest publications when it was first issued in 1807 as "A Treatise on Hernia," the present work won a prize at the Royal College of Surgeons. According to Heirs of Hippocrates, William Lawrence (1783-1867) "contributed significantly to the understanding and management of ruptures," and his "Treatise" "remained for many years the standard work on the subject." Lawrence crossed swords with both the Church of England and the medical establishment with several lectures and publications that espoused his materialist views, applauded France and the United States for their commitment to free scientific thought, and even dared to question Old Testament narratives regarding the origins of man. DNB tells us that "Throughout the nineteenth century . . . he was often regarded as a martyr for the cause of science and of intellectual liberty. His lectures were even cited as precursors for such later works of scientific naturalism as Charles Darwin's 'Descent of Man' (1871) and Thomas Huxley's 'Man's Place in Nature' (1863)." Various editions of the present work can be found on the market, but it would be difficult to find one in better contemporary condition than ours.
