Description
Mexico City: Imprenta de I. Escalante, 1873. Good plus.. 83pp. Original printed wrappers. Two wrapper corners chipped away. Otherwise light wear and dust soiling. Contemporary ownership inscription on front wrapper. A scarce summation of W.S. Rosecrans' arguments for the construction under his concession of cross-country railroad and telegraph lines from a point near Tampico, on the Gulf of Mexico, to a point between San Blas and Zacatulca, both on the Pacific Ocean. The concession was first granted in 1870 to three businessmen, Antonio D. Richards, Santiago Smith, and Jose Brennan, but was then altered in 1872 to give the rights to Civil War General W. S. Rosecrans. Rosecrans, briefly appointed a diplomat in Mexico by Grant after the Civil War, seems to have been involved in the effort from the beginning, and then taken over the principal interest in the concession when the original investors bowed out. The present work, published in 1873, prints over eighty pages summarizing the proposal, its costs, and potential benefits, but negotiations between Rosecrans and the Mexican government petered out by year's end and the project was a failure. OCLC locates copies in four U.S. institutions.

Description
London: William Ridgway, 1864. 26pp. Disbound a bit roughly. Otherwise a clean and Very Good text., Walker had been an expansionist Mississippi Senator and Polk's Treasury Secretary, enthusiastically supporting the Texas annexation and the Mexican War. But "Walker was at heart a Free-Soiler" and he remained an "eager Unionist" [DAB]. He spent much of the War in England selling federal bonds to support the war effort. In this Letter he demonstrates, with an array of data, the economic superiority of free labor over slavery. OCLC 931288176 [1- U Bristol], 266070322 [1- Cambridge U] as of January 2025.

Description
NL, Canada: James Lane Publishing, a division of Downhome Publishing, 2009. Quarto, softbound (slick, full-color illustrated wrappers), unpaginated [56] pp. Fine. Illustrated with photographs and with numerous drawings. From lower cover: It was 1913 and the ship Karluk left British Columbia on a scientific expedition to Canada’s Arctic. At her wheel was Captain Robert Abram Bartlett, the Master Mariner of the North from Brigus, Newfoundland. The Karluk became trapped in the early winter ice and was carried across the Arctic Ocean, where it was crushed and sank. The crew and passengers set up camp on the ice and months later, when daylight returned to the Arctic, they walked to an island. From there, the brave Captain Bartlett left the survivors while he and a young Inuk walked a treacherous 700 miles down the coast of Siberia to get help. This is one of the greatest stories of heroism and survival ever told.
