Description
Accompanied by five autograph letters from Payne to Zantzinger, signed 27 October 1849 – 4 May 1851. Washington, DC, 1851. The poem is written on a sheet of stationery, 8 x 6 1/2 inches embossed at the edges, and mounted on a larger sheet (9 x 8 3/4 inches); a small newspaper clipping accompanies the poem and notes that this particular copy was loaned by Mrs. Zantzinger to the Smithsonian Institution to be exhibited at the National Museum. The accompanying letters (12mo and 8vo, nine total pages, approximately 800 words) are all addressed to William C. Zantzinger (1818-1878); four of the letters are still enclosed in their mailing envelopes, three of which have canceled Benjamin Franklin five cent stamps, among the first general issue postage stamps available for use throughout the United States. The sheet on which the poem is written is age-toned; otherwise, a very good lot. (7189). John Howard Payne (born in New York City but reared in Boston) was an American actor, poet, author and diplomat. He is best remembered for composing "Home, Sweet Home." He was charming, temperamental and his lack of business acumen often left him in financial distress. Early success as an actor led him to try his talents on the London stage, though he found more work as a playwright. His composition "Home, Sweet Home," originally performed as part of a play that he wrote in England for Charles Kemble was wildly successful both in the United States and abroad, but he did not obtain economic stability from it. He returned relatively penniless to the United States in 1832, but the popularity of his song became his introduction into social circles where there were people willing to help him. One of his champions was Daniel Webster who successfully lobbied President Tyler to give him a post as the American consul to Tunis in 1842. With the election of President Polk in 1845, Payne was recalled (see DAB). The letters in this group all indicate his desire to regain his consular post, and emphasize his difficult financial situation. William Zantzinger, the recipient of Payne's letters, was Daniel Webster's personal secretary. In the first letter (dated New York, Oct. 27, 1849) Payne thanks Zantzinger for his “kind and effective activity in relation to my money.” He complains that his replacement in Tunis [Samuel Davies Heap] was “not content with clipping me out of the interest and indemnification, a new claim is trumped up to diminish my receipts, by a pretense that more rent [from his time in Tunis] remained unsettled than I had allowed for." The next letter (dated New York, Dec. 1, 1849) again discusses money problems. “It happens singularly enough that Mrs. Dyson’s is the only account upon which I have been dunned since I got my money. Everyone else has waited for me to move. I have paid away a very large portion of what I got, and shall only retain enough in hand to clear me through a new experiment of a few weeks in Washington.…" Two more from New York in early 1850 announce his plans to come to Washington to try to find work. By the final letter, dated New York, May 4, 1851, he has succeeded in getting his consul post back and notes “By the time this reaches you … I shall be off in the Humboldt for Havre." Payne died in Tunis in 1852, and was replaced by his nemesis Heap. Over thirty years later, philanthropist W.W. Corcoran paid to have his body returned to the United States. "Home, Sweet Home" continued to be a popular song long after Payne's death, and a favorite of soldiers during the Civil War. President Lincoln requested the Italian opera singer Adelina Patti perform it when she visited the White House in 1862.

Description
Hartford: E.B. and E.C. Kellogg, 1845. First edition. Twenty-seven lithographed silhouette portrait plates and twenty-seven lithographed facsimiles of the subject's handwriting. 111pp. Folio. Publisher's black morocco backed cloth boards, upper cover pictorially stamped in gilt, worn at board edges. Foxing. First edition. Twenty-seven lithographed silhouette portrait plates and twenty-seven lithographed facsimiles of the subject's handwriting. 111pp. Folio. This impressively large scale work is notable for its lithographs of renowned Americans of the 1820s, '30s and '40s, showing the subjects standing in full-length silhouette profile, against a tinted background, resulting in effective and evocative portraits. The silhouettes were originally executed with scissors, based on sketches made from life by Brown (with the exception of Washington), who was widely celebrated for his scissor portraits. Included, after the eulogistic frontispiece dedicated to Washington, are John Marshall, John Quincy Adams, Richard C. Moore, Andrew Jackson, John Forsyth, William Henry Harrison, John C. Calhoun, De Witt Clinton, Richard M. Johnson, Joel Poinsett, Alexander Macomb, Martin Van Buren, Samuel Southard, Henry Clay, Henry Wise, Thomas Hart Benton, John Tyler, Levi Woodbury, Thomas Cooper, Daniel Webster, William White, Silas Wright, Nathaniel Tallmadge, Felix Grundy, Dixon Lewis, and John Randolph. Each portrait is accompanied by another plate displaying a facsimile of the subject's handwriting, usually in a piece of correspondence. Howes B871, "b.

Description
Orléans, France: L. P. Couret, 1794. Small quarto. Bifolium, 4 pp. 3/4-inch of loss at upper corner (with no loss to text). Soft early horizontal fold. Very minor foxing. Very good. The 1794 French Revolutionary decree transferring the former royal collections of scientific, technological, and artistic objects to newly designated state inventories, naming the commissioners of each to form the new commission temporaire des Arts. Forty-three commissioners and twelve categories of objects are named, offering an informative view of cultural authority and material taxonomy at the height of the Revolution. Almost immediately upon the overthrow of the French monarchy in 1792, members of the National Convention embarked upon the urgent and staggering task of protecting the massive royal collections and reorganizing them according to Republican and Enlightenment ideals. Within months, the famous Jardin du Roi and Cabinet dHistoire Naturelle were newly established as the Muséum National dHistoire Naturelle, and on August 10, 1793, the anniversary of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinettes imprisonment, the Louvre palace opened for the first time as a public museum. The following February (Pluviôse II), the National Convention decreed in this document that a temporary commission of arts be established to inventory and reunite in suitable depositories the books, instruments, machines and other objects of science and arts proper to the public instruction and assigned forty-three leading scientists, engineers, artists, and craftsmen to the task. Among the commissioners inventorying the collections of natural history, botany, zoology, and mineralogy are the great naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and the veteran gardener of the Jardin du Roi, André Thouin. Other particularly notable names listed include the anatomist Honoré Fragonard, the famous watchmaker Antide Janvier (assigned to instruments of physics, astronomy, and others), the important Parisian printer Barrois, and the painter and landscape architect Hubert Robert (here, simply Hubert), who had narrowly escaped the guillotine a few months earlier. Additional categories of objects to be inventoried include maps, paintings, and sculptures, machines of war, antiquities and medals, maps, chemical laboratories, musical instruments ancient, foreign, or the most rare in their perfection among the known and modern, and various others. The present copy of the decree is a departmental printing, containing a printed acknowledgment of the decree by the authorities of the department of Loiret in its capital, Orléans, signed 25 days after the decree was issued, on 13 Ventôse of the second year of the Republic (March 3, 1794). OCLC lists three copies. Scarce.

An advertising brochure which tells "The Story of the Snow Cruiser", which was a vehicle designed by Dr. Thomas C. It was to be shipped In November 1939 from Boston to Antarctica to "serve for three years as the mobile research and survey unit of the United States Antarctic Service".
