Description
Edinburgh: Printed for and Sold by the Booksellers, 1792. "who was carried off from Aberdeen in his Infancy, and sold for a Slave in Pennsylvania." In 1754, after a series of abductions and adventures that carried him from his homeland, Williamson was taken prisoner by a group of Cherokee Indians. He escaped after a year and subsequently joined the army before being wounded and shipped back to Plymouth, England. He then walked back to Aberdeen, telling his stories enroute, which he later published as this book. The frontispiece engraving, "Peter Williamson in the Dress of a Delaware Indian" shows him smoking a pipe. First published in York, England in 1757, it went through several printings prior to this 1792 edition. See Howes W-500, who notes, "Among British readers the most popular of all Indian captivities; describes the 1755 Oswego expedition." See also Field 1677. Sabin 104474. Only a single copy of this edition has sold at auction since 1901, and that one lacked the frontispiece. Nothing but modern reprints online. Bound in calf over marbled boards. Binding and spine label worn. Back board detached but present, as is the frontispiece. Housed in fabric "flipflop" and slipcase.. 17 cm. vi-156 pp. b/w frontispiece

Description
Harper & Brothers , New York, 1849. Good: some light stain to Volume I, becoming more pronounced toward rear of volume, substantial foxing to Volume II, stain to rear endpaper of Volume II. 7 1/2 x 4 7/8 inches, xii, [13]-365; [v]-xii, [9]-387 pages, publisher's blindstamped brown cloth, moderate spotting to covers of Volume I, light wear to tips of Volume I, moderate wear to tips, spine ends and joints of Volume II, front free endpaper torn from Volume II, First American edition. BAL 13658. Two volumes. 8-page publisher's catalogue bound at end of volume II. The bindings, although both are brown publisher's cloth, do not match. Volume I is in Blanck's TZ cloth, with orange-yellow coated endpapers, whereas Volume II is in A cloth with yellow coated endpapers. The stamping on Volume I is a simpler pattern than that on Volume II. Volume II's binding is the earlier, corresponding to that described by Blanck in the "Note" contained in the entry. Stenciled in brown ink in gothic letter on the front free endpaper of Volume I is the name "Thomas Melville." Though we cannot be sure, this volume could have belonged to one of the author's brothers, who lived between 1830 and 1884.

MYRTLE ELIZABETH JOHNSON (1881 -1967) was an American marine biologist, ascidiologist, and educator in California in the early 20th century. She was the first woman PhD faculty member at the San Diego State College (now San Diego State University), where she taught from 1921 to 1946, and was chair of the Biology department from 1928 to 1940. Johnson received her B.S. in Math and Zoology in 1908, and an M.S. in zoology (with a secondary teaching credential) in 1909. She worked as a research assistant to William Ritter at the Marine Biological Association in La Jolla (1 909-1910) before continuing post- graduate study in Zoology, working with Dr. Harry Beal Torrey. Professor Ritter named an ascidian in her honor in 1909 for her excellent detailed scientific illustration of a particular ascidian. She received her PhD (Zoology) in 1912. While working as a high school biology teacher in Pasadena (1912-1921 ), Johnson began work (1915) on a study of intertidal species with another Pasadena high school biologist, HARRY JAMES SNOOK. They continued to work on the text after Johnson joined the faculty of San Diego State College in 1921. Johnson and Snook's Seashore Animals of the Pacific Coast (offered here) was first published in 1927, with a total of 4 printings (1927, 1935, 1955, 1967), and was the standard descriptive text of intertidal species until Ed Ricketts's Between Pacific Tides was published in 1939. Ricketts considered Johnson's book "the vade mecum of marine biologists of the Pacific. Indispensable." She was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

CONTENTS: 1. The hearing power in deaf-mutes; being the results of the examination of 175 deaf-mute children. Archives of Otology, Vol. xxii, No. 2, 170-178, 1893; 2. The pathology of deaf-mutism. Archives of Otology, Vol. xxii, No. 3, 271-279, 1893; 3. Congenital deafness. Glasgow Medical Journal, October, 1893; 4. The education of the Deaf and (so-called) dumb. Proceedings of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow, 1893 (pp 1-11, Dr. Love's paper; pp 11-22, Mr. Addison's paper); 5. An inquiry into the limits of hearing. Glasgow Medical Journal, 1888; 6. On the acoustics of musical sounds. Proceedings of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow, 1888. JAMES KERR LOVE (1858-1942) graduated in Glasgow University M.B., C.M. in 1880 and M.D. in 1888. Early in his career he began to devote himself to Otology and attained great prominence in that specialty. He held many appointments, the chief of which was that of Aurist to the Royal Infirmary from 1891 to 1919 when he retired as Hon. Consulting Surgeon. In 1912 he was appointed to the National Bureau Lectureship for the Prevention of Deafness. Dr. Kerr Love was widely known for his pioneer advocacy of the education of the deaf mute in lip reading, maintaining that by that method the deaf person could be brought to lead a relatively normal life in mixing with his fellows. Miss Helen Keller, the extraordinary woman who in spite of being blind and deaf and dumb was able to educate herself and write books of the story of her life, was a friend of Dr. Kerr Love, and was persuaded by him to leave her home in America and visit Scotland where for a time she was his guest. During that visit Glasgow University conferred on her the Honorary Degree of LL.D. None of those present at the Graduation Ceremony in the Bute Hall will forget the moving picture of this remarkable lady being led to the rostrum by Dr. Kerr Love to be received and laureated by the Chancellor. And if anything it was even more striking to watch her friend and teacher, the late Mrs. Macey, sitting quietly by her side telling her in her own understandable language with fingers on lips all about what was going on around her from which she was otherwise shut off.
