Description
Lynchburg: Fletcher & Toler, 1832. Elephant folio sheet, folded to [4] pp. Each page printed in six columns. Light foxing, Very Good. The masthead with an engraving of the iconic American Eagle, wings spread, holding banner reading "E Pluribus Unum." Very Good. This issue of a rare Virginia newspaper prints detailed information on the doings of the 22d Congress at Washington, and activities at Richmond in the Virginia Legislature. A report about debates on the abolition of slavery includes references to "the enormous evil of slavery, the propriety and necessity of acting, but not at this time. . . It is impossible to give the distant reader a just conception of the profound excitement which prevails, or of the universal consciousness of the incalculable magnitude and weight of the crisis." There are many local advertisements, some illustrated, and legal notices.
