Description
Many illus., mostly in black but some in red, pink, gray, green, yellow, blue, etc. Ca. 1821 folding leaves of text. 1083 chapters in 50 parts in 54 vols. (parts 14 & 15 in one vol., parts 24, 34, 42, & 47 in two vols. each, plus one vol. of table of contents). 8vo (266 x 188 mm.), orig. blue wrappers, orig. manuscript labels on each upper wrapper, new stitching. [Probably Kyoto: written in 1690 & this is a mid-Edo copy]. A rare and extremely important text, finely illustrated and complete in 50 parts; it remained unpublished until 1936. WorldCat lists no copy of this manuscript in North America (the NYPL’s copy is a microfilm). This “monumental fifty-volume work of encyclopedic nature on gagaku” (Fukushima & Nelson), was written by Suenao Abe (1622-1708), a 17th-generation specialist performer on the hichiriki (a double-reed flute). Gagaku refers to all traditional court music of Japan. The word is written in Japanese with two Chinese characters that signify “elegant music.” Its origins are Chinese, but the Japanese borrowed only the Chinese court entertainment music and not the ritual music. “The Gakkaroku by Abe Suenao was compiled in 1690. At that time, the author (born in 1622) was 68 and looked back to a long experience in the service of the Imperial court in Kyoto. The Abe family was specialized in hichiriki playing and in bugaku since many generations. Suenao was excellent in both. He made a special study of the percussion patterns, to which a large part of the Gakkaroku is devoted, dealing separately with every instrument. Bugaku also is most thoroughly described. The Gakkaroku was greatly admired ever since it was completed, and is very highly thought of by modern scholars. Together with the Kyokunsho and the Taigensho it forms the body of the Gakusho’ no sandaibu, the three orthodox compendia of musical knowledge… “Abe Suenao died in 1708, at the age of 87, 160 years before the great refurbishing of Imperial court music during the Meiji restoration. His well documented work was one of the pillars to support the newly restored gagaku.”–Eta Harich-Schneider, “Roei: The Medieval Court Songs of Japan” in Monumenta Nipponica, Vol. 14, No. 1/2 (April-July 1958), p. 106. This encyclopedia of Japanese musicology immediately became a standard work, and copies were quickly made and circulated. As noted above, it remained in manuscript for nearly 250 years and was not published until 1936. This encyclopedia is incredibly rich in detail, revealing Abe’s great scholarship. For example, the corpus of musical works past and present is given with lyrics and notation, and the sections on theory and notation are extensive. The descriptions of all the musical instruments include information on their origins and structures, and instructions for how to manufacture, practice and play them. Shishinden’s theater and stage settings are described in very considerable detail and illustrated. Names of performers and dancers are given with their family trees. Abe also lists the most famous and popular pieces of many periods; important ritual performances listed by month; the sequence within performances; the greatest performers of the past; styles of dances; and extensive lists of musical pieces for dances. Descriptions of costumes, masks, and headgear are provided along with illustrations. Many performances of the past and their settings are fully elaborated. This work is wonderfully bibliographical as well: Abe provides in the final text volume a list of earlier reference books and manuscripts. The illustrations also include images of the musical instruments. Some worming, occasionally touching text (but not badly), but a fine set. Preserved in five chitsu. ❧ Kazuo Fukushima & Steven G. Nelson, “The Documentary Sources of Japanese Music” in Fontes Artis Musicae, Vol. 43, No. 2 (April-June 1996), p. 182.

VILLEGAS, José. Album Militar. Coleccion de uniformes del ejercito Español pintadas por D.J. Villegas y lithografiados por V. Adam. Madrid: Estamperias de los Suizos, 1846. First edition. Folio (12 1/16 x 9 1/4 inches; 307 x 235 mm.). Pictorial lithograph title page and thirty-two superb hand colored lithograph plates by Victor Adam after José Villegas, all on stubs. Printed by Godard and Lemercier. Six of the plates are very slightly toned but not affecting images. The thirty-two plates are bound out of order. Early twentieth century three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards, spine with five raised bands ruled in blind and lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. This extremely rare Spanish work on the military costume of the Spanish Army was issued without text, save for a title page. The composition of the subjects is superb, but the chief glory of this work is the exceptional hand-coloring. OCLC locates just one complete copy in libraries and institutions worldwide: Brown University (RI, US). The Bibliotheque Nationale de France and the Kunstbilio Staatliche Museen zu Berlin have just 25 of the 32 plates, apparently uncolored. The only copy that we can locate at auction over the past fifty years was at Sotheby's Hodgsons in 1979 (24 of 25 hand-colored plates only). Colas 3016 (25 plates only); Lipperheide 2361 (25 plates only); Not in Bobins. (According to Colas 3017 and Hiler p. 881 there was an undated edition with 34 hand colored plates). Colas 3016 (25 plates only); Lipperheide 2361 (25 plates only); Not in Bobins.

Description
Prague: Joannes Carolus Hraba, 1777. 4to (238 x 192 mm). [84] pages. Interleaved. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and typographic ornaments. Contemporary Bohemian gold-tooled red morocco, covers with double decorative borders including drawer handle and flower tools, the two borders linked at the corners by flower tools, at center the gold-blocked arms of Count Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein, Bishop of Litomerice within a wreath, spine gold-tooled in six compartments, Hernnhuter(?) pastepaper endleaves with a recessed saltire design of floral bands on a purple-gray ground, at center of each compartment a wreath-like ornament in green with a red center, gilt edges (extremities worn, covers a bit scratched, endpapers faded at outer edges). Provenance: Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein, Imperial Count, Bishop of Litomerice (1716-1789), supralibros, his inscription on title, Unica spes nostra Deus est; William A. Foyle (1885-1963), bookplate, sale, Christie’s London, 11 July 2000, part lot 142.*** A lovely example of liturgical printing and Bohemian bookbinding, this  interleaved volume of the annual guide to daily liturgy of the cathedral of Litoměřice or Leitmeritz, a town on the river Elbe, halfway between Dresden and Prague, and the seat of the eponymous diocese, belonged to the Bishop under whose authority it was issued, Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein. Waldstein was an important patron of Czech science, who amassed a vast personal library notable for its breadth and depth, including scientific literature as well as Czech-language Bibles and theological treatises. The Directorium (or Ordo recitandi, or Calendarium) was printed each year for the use of all the clergy in a diocese. “It consists simply of a calendar for the year, in which there are printed against each day concise directions concerning the Office and Mass to be said on that day. The calendar is usually provided with some indication of fast days, special indulgences, days of devotion, and other items of information which it may be convenient for the clergy to be reminded of as they occur. This Ordo is issued with the authority of the bishop or bishops concerned, and is binding upon the clergy under their jurisdiction” (Catholic Encyclopedia). Following the calendar are several sections of an Ordo missarum listing a total of 43 deceased local individuals for whom private Masses are to be held, the frequency per year evidently depending on how much their families had paid. The volume concludes with the Ordo processionis, for processions to be held either at the public’s request or in times of drought, when rain is sought (apparently a frequent occurrence!). Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein, a member of the prominent Bohemian noble family, served as auxiliary bishop of Prague before becoming the 6th Bishop of Litomerice in 1759. In line with the enlightened domestic policies of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, Waldstein was a patron of the arts and sciences who promoted education among the clergy, scholarship and culture. He formed his own private library and numismatic collection, both still preserved, and is remembered for his tolerance. The manuscript inscription on the title-page,  "Unica spes nostra Deus est," was Waldstein's motto, which he himself usually entered into his books (our thanks to Tomáš Bárta Pražák of the National Museum Library in Prague for this information). The distinctive pastepaper endleaves of this volume may have been produced by the Moravian nuns of the convent of Herrnhut, a town at the eastern edge of Saxony, due east of Dresden (and 93 km northeast of Litom ice). From about 1765 to 1824 these sisters produced delightful pastepapers (Kleisterpapier), using dyes from discarded textiles, which they decorated with their fingers, with small wooden stamps to produce a negative or white design, and/or with small wheeled rolls. The criss-crossing decorative bands of this example were apparently produced by repeated rectangular woodblocks or short rolls. “The creativity of these papers, their variety and artistic quality were immediately appreciated.... Sold by traveling peddlers, they rapidly penetrated all the regions of Germany and neighboring countries. These papers are today considered among the most accomplished of all pastepapers” (Kopylov, my translation). OCLC gives no locations, although there are holdings in the Czech Republic and Moravia. On the paper, see: Christiane Kopylov, Papiers Dorés d’Allemagne (2012), p. 26 and nos. 182-185; Haemmerle, Buntpapier (1977), pp. 139-144; Heijbroek & Greven, Sierpapier (1994), pp. 30-32. On Bishop Waldstein, see T. Bárta Pražák, Barokní humanista-kazatel Emanuel Arnošt z Valdštejna při Metropolitní kapitule sv. Víta v Praze (PhD dissertation), Charles University, Prague, 2024 (online).

Age toning. Crease marks. Fading. Minor tears to the rough paper edge.
Description
New York, 1872. Age toning. Crease marks. Fading. Minor tears to the rough paper edge.. A political flyer condemning the corruption by the Democratic Party, and more specifically the Tammany Hall and its Grand Sachem, William M. Tweed (1823-1878). Tammany Hall, alternately called the Tammany Society, Society of St. Tammany, the Sons of St. Tammany, or the Colombian Order, was a political organization in New York that was first founded in 1786. Tammany Hall had particular influence over the Democratic Party and New York City and New York State Politics. Tammany Hall was also know for its graft and political corruption, but even more so under the rule of William M. Tweed, who supposedly swindled the New York tax payers out of $25 to $45 million dollars, though later more recent estimates have placed that number as high as $200 million. This 8 page flyer, most likely printed on behalf of the Republican party, details out the expenditures of the Democratic Party between 1860-1870. What is interesting is that the flyer never names Tweed specifically, but rather the Democratic Party and Tammany Hall. The flyer however does point out some corruption on the part of the Republican Party, but, it continues on to assert that "a few dishonest men may have crept into position where for a season they exercised their dishonest purposes against the public funds; but this much is safe to say: all the moneys stolen by Republican officials during the ten years and half of the rule of that party , is not sufficient to pay the annual interest of the amounts stolen by the Democratic national administrations or upon the sums plundered from the people of the Country and State of New York during the last few years." The flyer ends with this last argument against the Democratic Party: "This is the Democratic record, made up from its own history. It ever has been, and it ever will be, a thieving, depredating, unprincipled cabal, whose only impulse has been self-aggrandizement, though it cost of national treasure, life and honor to accomplish its nefarious ends. It cannot change its disposition and policy in this respect any more than forty thieves could refrain from robbery when temptation afforded an opportunity. In view of history, no honest Republican, no candid Democrat, can vote for or give countenance to Democratic nominees, no matter how insignificant the trust for which they have been named." 8 folded pages. Paper has rough edges. OCLC 2 (Oct 2019, one is dated 1871 the other 1872, but appears to be the same item) Measures 9 1/4" x 6" (folded), 18 1/2' x 11 3/4
