Description
Boston: Little, Brown & Co, 1934. First Editions. 4 vols. All are fine in fine dustjackets. The basic triple decker is ex–Jean Hersholt. His first volume (Mutiny on the Bounty) is a first edition in the second binding, with pictorial endpapers, however, supplementing his copy is a 1st edition of it in the 1st binding with plain endpapers, and this additional copy is also fine in a fine dustjacket. The reasoning was to keep the three Hersholt books together because they are a suite of such outstanding quality and provenance, but not to have them diminished by the second binding endpapers in vol. I. The trilogy’s second volume (Man Against the Sea) is the first edition and there are no eccentricities of issue, state, or binding, and it is the scarcest of the three in fine condition. The third volume (Pitcairn’s Island) is also the first edition with no bibliographical complications.

Description
London: Oriental Translation Fund, 1831. First Edition. Fine. The first book of Buddhism in English. 4to (227 x 145mm), pp. [i]-xxxii, [2], [34]-152. Modern marbled wrappers, French folded. Complete with half-title and errata sheet. Text in English accompanied by Chinese characters. This is the first book "of" Buddhism in English-that is, the first translation of instructional Buddhist text into the language. It is preceded by two years by an English text examining Buddhism from the outside, Edward Upham's The History and Doctrine of Budhism [sic] (London, 1829, illustrated from manuscripts in a British collection). Neumann's book was written in Canton and dedicated to Sir George Staunton. The laws, regulations, and their supplements are followed by an insightful note. The translator was Karl Friedrich Neumann (1793-1870), who adopted the given name Charles while in the United Kingdom but used F. or Fried. in his scholarly writings, accounting for the alternate name on the title page. The significance of this work extends well beyond its priority as the first English Buddhist text. Neumann's translation emerged during a period when European colonial expansion was creating unprecedented access to Asian religious materials, yet few scholars possessed both the linguistic competence and the cultural patience for accurate translation. His decision to include Chinese characters alongside the English anticipated modern academic standards by decades, and his focus on institutional Buddhism (the concrete laws and regulations governing monastic life) provided Western readers with an account of Buddhist practice rather than the kind of abstract philosophical speculation or orientalist fantasy that characterized most early European encounters with Asian religion. The title itself betrays how alien the material still was: "Catechism of the Shamans" borrows the vocabulary of Christian instruction and applies it to a tradition that fit no existing Western category, lending the whole enterprise a faintly esoteric quality that any encounter with an unfamiliar religion carries for an outsider. Neumann's approach proved remarkably prescient. By introducing Buddhism to the West through its lived institutional reality, he established a template for serious Buddhist scholarship that would not become standard practice for another generation.

Description
Paris, 1930. Double sided sheet measuring 5 ½ x 8 ¾ inches, folded into four panels, all illustrated. Fine condition.. An apparently unrecorded program documenting one of Baker’s defining early Paris triumphs, the lavish Paris Qui Remue revue at the Casino de Paris, a venue synonymous with large-scale spectacle during the interwar years. Following her breakout success in La Revue Nègre (1925) and rapid ascent within Parisian nightlife, Baker became a central figure in revues that blended American jazz idioms, African diasporic performance traditions, and French music-hall staging. The present illustrated souvenir captures the scale of the production through staged tableaux, chorus formations, and elaborate scenic constructions characteristic of Casino de Paris spectacles of the late 1920s and early 1930s. The revue’s visual language—geometric stage lighting, mass choreography, and exoticist imagery—reflects interwar Paris entertainment culture, where American jazz performers and Black expat artists shaped performance style. Baker’s performance of “J’ai deux amours,” introduced during this period and quickly becoming her signature song, cemented her image as both an international star and a symbolic mediator between Paris and America. The photographs reproduce large ensemble numbers featuring tiered chorus lines in feathered headdresses, synchronized kick formations, and geometric Art Deco stage designs; aerial-style shots of massed dancers arranged in radiating patterns; costumed scenes labeled “La Danse du Monde Bleu” and “Noblesse d’Ébène”; and a central portrait of Baker in elaborate costume with extended wing-like adornments, surrounded by male dancers in formal evening dress. Additional panels depict garden tableaux, mechanized stage props, and full-cast curtain scenes, offering a visual record of the revue’s scale, choreography, and scenic ambition. We find no record of this booklet in OCLC or in commerce.

Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. First edition. Very Good. The real Little Lord Fauntleroy's signed biography of his own mother: children's author and creator of the character Frances Hodgson Burnett. First edition. Signed by Vivian Burnett and warmly inscribed to his father-in-law on the front free endpaper: "To the finest of Father-in-Laws with heartfelt acknowledgement of his tactful and expert assistance in the preparation of this volume. Sept 19 1927." A different hand has written in ink below: "Constance Buel's husband - Vivian Burnett." xvi, 423 pp. Bound in dark green publisher's cloth stamped in gilt to spine and front cover. Very Good with light wear and soiling to covers; spine faded and frayed at head and tail. Binding shaken, first gathering loose. Light foxing and dust-soiling to textblock edges, faint scattered foxing to margins throughout. October 1927 newspaper clipping in three parts laid in and previously paperclipped to half-title, resulting in offsetting and rusty clip imprint to first three leaves and slight dent to following thirty pages. Publisher's advertisement tipped to back pastedown. Dust jacket lacking, though partially preserved; front panel tipped to back endpaper. Vivian Burnett, much loved by his mother, was the model for her popular character Little Lord Fauntleroy. This book, his biography of her, was published three years after her death in 1924. The New York Times review laid in declares that "one must go far to find a lovelier picture than the one Mr. Burnett draws of his mother's relations with her children." Below his affectionate inscription, another hand has written in ink: "Constance Buel's husband - Vivian Burnett.

Octavo, xv, [3], 204pp, [4]. Blue cloth, title stamped in gilt. Floral endpapers, top edge gilt. Complete with frontispiece portrait and nine illustrated plates. Top corner with a bumped edge. Baldwin (1842-1923) was one of only 19 individuals to receive the Medal of Honor twice, earning the distinction for separate acts of valor during the Civil War and the Indian Wars. Baldwin began his military service in 1861 with the 19th Michigan Infantry, notably leading a countercharge at the Battle of Peachtree Creek in 1864, where he captured two Confederate officers and a regimental guidon. His second Medal of Honor was awarded for a daring 1874 rescue mission at McClellan's Creek, Texas, where he led an attack against a numerically superior Native American force to save two young girls from captivity. Baldwin also served in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War, eventually retiring as a major general in 1906. During World War I, he served as Adjutant General of the Colorado National Guard.

Description
Brazos Island, Texas, 1847. Document. Very good. (2) 8" x 10" sheets of paper. The first document signed at the bottom by Capt. A B Eaton from Brazos Island is dated December 15th, 1847 and is addressed to Major Thos. B Eastland q.m. The document reads "Major - I respectfully require of the Quartermaster's Department the necessary transportation receipts in bulk for the Subs Stores herewith invoiced, as required by Par 1088 Army Regulations. - Respectfully Your Obt Servt A B Eaton Capt ...sp?" The second document signed by Eaton on December 17th, 1847 is also addressed to Eastland and has the same exact content as the first letter (not a copy as the date is different and the writing has variation). A collection of Thomas B. Eastland's papers is held by the California Historical Society. From the Confederate Veteran February 1911 "Eastland Family" "Thomas B. Eastland came to Nashville, where he was engaged in business until about 1840, when he went to New Orleans to engage in the cotton brokerage business, and where he continued until the breaking out of the Mexican War, during which he served under General Zachary Taylor as major." Thomas B. Eastland's diary titled To California Through Texas and Mexico: The Diary of Thomas B. Eastland and Joseph G. Eastland, His Son was published by the California Historical Society in 1939 and is 59 pages long. From wikipedia: in 1846, "...it (Brazos Island) was the first military objective of the US Navy, in support of General Zachary Taylor's invasion of Mexico. Control over this important seaport was said by Harvard historian Leroy Graf to be the primary reason for the US invasion of Mexico. From Padre Island NS Historic Research Study (Chapter 3) "After the outbreak of hostilities, Brazos Island became the primary staging area for the continuing campaign. Volunteers from throughout Texas and the Mississippi Valley converged on the Island and headed inland for camps at Point Isabel and along the Rio Grande." Amos Beebe Eaton the signer of these documents, 1806-1877, was a career officer in the United States Army. He was General Zachary Taylor's Chief Commissary of Subsidence during the Mexican War. He was a graduate of West Point in 1826 and was made Brevet Major General of the Union Army in 1865 appointed by Andrew Johnson.

Edges worn, and many corners rounded; paper labels partly missing from first two volumes. Scattered moderate dampstaining and spots, yet very good condition overall.
