Description
London: Macmillan and Co., 1870. Presented by Lewis Carroll to the Crofts Sisters" An Early and Documented Family Association Set of Alice and Looking-Glass CARROLL, Lewis. (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. With forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel. Twenty-third thousand. London: Macmillan and Co., 1870. [with:] Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. With fifty illustrations by John Tenniel. Twenty-sixth thousand. London: Macmillan & Co., 1872. Both volumes inscribed by Lewis Carroll: Alice: "Mary Dowell Crofts / from the Author / 1870." Looking-Glass: "Florence Crofts / from the Author / March 9, 1873." Two volumes. Small octavo (7 x 4 7/8 inches; 178 x 98 mm.). Uniformly bound ca. 1940 by Bayntun-Rivière in full red morocco, covers ruled in gilt, each upper cover with a central gilt vignette (White Rabbit; Red Queen), spines with five raised bands, compartments richly tooled in gilt with Carrollian emblems, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. A fine and attractive uniform set. Provenance & Association: A remarkable and fully identified presentation set, inscribed by Carroll to Mary Dowell Crofts and her sister Florence Crofts, daughters of J. D. M. Crofts. The Crofts family is well documented within Carroll's circle. As recorded in The Letters of Lewis Carroll, Dodgson: formed a friendship with the family in the 1860s and visited them at Sevenoaks and Hastings. Lewis Carroll photographed Mary Crofts and maintained an ongoing correspondence with the sisters Mary and Forence. A letter dated April 12, 1873, addressed to Mary Crofts (only weeks after the inscription in Looking-Glass), confirms active contact at precisely the period of presentation. The use of "Dowell" in Mary's inscription corresponds exactly with her maternal family name (née Dowell), further confirming the identification. Significance This set represents: A paired Carroll presentation to members of the same family A documented and traceable association within his known social circle A chronologically coherent grouping (1870-1873) A rare instance where inscriptions, biography, and correspondence align Such copies transcend ordinary signed books and enter the category of association copies of the highest order. While early Macmillan printings of Alice and Looking-Glass are not uncommon, presentation copies by Carroll are rare, and paired family inscriptions are exceptionally uncommon. Rome: Ludovico Mirri, 1776-1778. Emperor Nero's Golden Palace The Domus Aureus CARLONI, Marco (1742-1796) after SMUGLIEWICZ, Franciszek (1745-1807) and BRENNA, Vincenzo (1745-1820). Detail of a fresco in the 'Domus Aureus'. Rome: Ludovico Mirri, [1776-1778]. Plate # 16. Original engraving with later hand coloring. Fine in a stunning gilt frame. Framed size: (28 x 23 3/4 inches; 711 x 603 mm.). Plate mark: (18 1/4 x 14 1/8 inches; 463 x 359 mm.). A fine plate from 'Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture' of an ancient fresco from the 'Domus Aureus', Nero's sumptuous imperial complex in Rome. A spectacular plate from 'Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture' of an ancient fresco from the 'Domus Aureus', Nero's sumptuous imperial complex in Rome. The image depicts three women, a naked man and a prancing horse. The women are dressed in blue, red and green robes, one of them standing by a child's chariot. The image is surrounded by a wonderful decorative border. The Domus Aurea (Latin, "Golden House") was a vast landscaped palace built by the Emperor Nero in the heart of ancient Rome after the great fire in 64 AD had destroyed a large part of the city and the aristocratic villas on the Palatine and Esquiline Hills. It replaced and extended his Domus Transitoria that he had built as his first palace complex on the site. Carloni's beautifully rendered plates faithfully capture the grotesque style of the ancient frescoes, which was characterized by decorative borders filled with whimsical, often comical animals and foliage taken from both nature and the artist's imagination. The ornamental borders also served the practical functions of framing the central mythological, religious, or historical subject portrayed and separating the various murals in a single decorative scheme. Designed by architects Severus and Celer. The magnitude and decadent extravagance of the impressive gold-covered, jewel bedecked palace was intended to glorify the Emperor's reign. Its rooms were filled with lavish furniture and its walls and ceilings covered with decorative late-Hellenistic murals by the renowned ancient artist Fabullus. Nero, however, died in 68 AD before the Domus was totally completed. In 1480, practically forgotten, the Domus was excavated, and its subterranean passages and rooms thereafter became known as 'le grotte' (cave). Many of its original frescoes survived, and their motifs and ancient style of ornamentation, called 'grotteschi' (grotesque) after 'grotte', became extremely popular during the Renaissance, influencing many prominent artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, Ghirlandio, and Pinturicchio. Published in 1776, 'Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture' is an elaborate album of engravings depicting the stunning 'al fresco' and 'al stucco' murals of Nero's Domus Aureus. Carloni's beautifully rendered plates faithfully capture the ancient Roman grotesque style, which became a hallmark of Renaissance Art.

Description
London: Macmillan and Co., 1899. A Classic Macmillan Issue Elegantly Rebound CARROLL, Lewis. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. With Forty-Two Illustrations by John Tenniel. London: Macmillan & Co., 1899. Octavo (8 x 5 3/8 inches; 203 x 137 mm.). [3-11], 12-122, [2] pp. Text block browned. Handsomely bound ca. 1960 by Zaehnsdorf in full red polished calf, covers triple-ruled in gilt, upper cover with central Alice medallion in gilt, lower cover with Queen of Hearts medallion. Spine with five raised bands, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt in compartments, with two green morocco labels. Gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A very attractive copy. A pleasing late-Victorian Macmillan edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, retaining the classic suite of forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel, whose visual interpretation remains inseparable from the text itself. By the end of the nineteenth century, Tenniel's images had become canonical, shaping the enduring iconography of Alice, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts. This 1899 issue represents the continued popularity of Carroll's masterpiece into the fin-de-siècle period, when demand for the book remained strong and Macmillan maintained it in steady production. While later than the coveted early printings of the 1860s, such editions offer an accessible and highly readable form of the text, particularly when elevated by fine binding. The present copy is notably enhanced by a mid-twentieth-century Zaehnsdorf binding of excellent quality, the red polished calf and decorative medallions lending a suitably rich and playful character to the work. Zaehnsdorf bindings of this type are widely regarded for their craftsmanship and durability, making them both practical and aesthetically appealing for collectors.

Description
28/08/1812. We obtained these uncommon additional instructions directly from the Crowninshield descendants and this document has never before been offered for sale. A supplement to a privateer’s instructions, fascinatingly made out to a future cabinet memberOn June 18, 1812, Madison signed the Declaration of War, marking the beginning of the War of 1812. During that war, American privateers played a significant role in disrupting British maritime commerce and bolstering the American economy. Privateers often used fast-sailing schooners and sloops, well-suited for raiding and capturing merchant vessels. They captured a substantial number of British merchant vessels, far exceeding the U.S. Navy's captures, and brought home valuable prizes. Privateers were privately owned and operated, commissioned by the U.S. government to attack enemy ships during wartime. The Crowninshield family was historically prominent in shipbuilding and merchant shipping, and political and military leadership. George Crowninshield was a captain and merchant, and he had a son Benjamin, who was a captain, merchant, ship builder, and Secretary of the Navy between 1815 and 1818, during the administrations of Presidents James Madison and James Monroe. During the war, the Crowninshields were important figures in privateering and offered three vessels of their own to the U.S. government for service as privateers. These were the ship John, the sloop Jefferson, and the ship America. They were also involved with other privateers where they had an ownership interest, such as the Ship Alexander, which had 19 owners, including George Crowninshield. Benjamin Crowninshield was for a time Captain of the Alexander.Ship captains like Crowninshield were issued instructions, and these contained provisions such as this: “You will be particularly cautious not to molest any vessels having the American flag, unless you can ascertain the cargo to be on British account, sufficient in value to justify sending her in. Neutrals are to be in all cases respected, unless they have enemy property on board, or articles contraband of war, bound to an enemy port. The property of a friend is to be respected on board of an enemy, while the goods of an enemy are, by the laws of nations, good prize even on board the ship of a friend. Should you have many prisoners on board, it would be well to appropriate some captured vessel of little value, and send them to some convenient British port, taking a receipt for them. We do not recommend your burning any vessel, even though they may not be worth sending into port. Probably in most cases, you may ransom, or take out some valuable articles of cargo aboard your ship.”However, there was apparently some uncertainty about how to deal with American ships coming from British ports, as in August 1812 supplemental instructions were issued for the guidance of captains. These were entitled “Additional Instruction to the Public and Private Armed Vessels of the United States.”Document signed, Washington, August 28, 1812, being the instructions provided to “Capt. Benjamin Crowninshield of the private armed Ship Alexander”, and signed by James Monroe as Secretary of State. “The public and private armed vessels of the United States are not to interrupt any vessels belonging to citizens of the United States coming from British ports to the United States laden with British merchandize, in consequence of the alleged repeal of the British Orders in Council, but are on the contrary to give aid and assistance to the same; in order that such vessels and their cargoes may be dealt with on their arrival as may be dealt with by the competent authorities. By command of the President of the United States of America.”According to the postwar book, “Royal Navy Biographies”, ""The Alexander is a remarkably fine ship…and was considered the fastest sailing privateer out of the United States."" The Alexander was returning from a 10-week privateering cruise in 1813, having captured four prizes and recaptured three others. Captain Benjamin Crowninshield had assigned more than half of his crew to sail his prizes into Salem. The Alexander then had just 40 crew members, 16 Frenchmen from the twice recaptured French privateer Invincible Napoleon, and 110 British prisoners onboard, when the British ship Rattler, in company with the small schooner the Bream, ran her onto the beach. The Evening Post of Boston reported May 24, 1813, “We learn by a gentleman who came in the last eastern stage, that two seamen belonging to the privateer ship Alexander…, Captain Crowninshield, of Salem, came as passengers in the stage from Portsmouth to that town. They informed that on Wednesday, between 10 and 11 o'clock, that ship was chased on shore in Wells Bay, by a British sloop of war. The Alexander had endeavored to reach Portsmouth but the wind favored the enemy, who were so close in pursuit that but 20 of the crew escaped, and about 20 more including the officers, remained on board when she was taken possession of."" Captain Crowninshield agreed to relinquish his privateer and all his prisoners and cargo in exchange for the parole of his crew. Captain Alexander Gordon, commander of the British sloop-of-war, sent a flag of truce and a message for the militia men onshore. Convinced that resistance would be unwise, the militia watched as the Alexander was floated off at the next high tide and sailed for St Johns, N.B. She had lost her rudder but was otherwise no worse for the battle. Captain Gordon was thrilled with his prize. Crowninshield and other Americans were released. We obtained these uncommon additional instructions directly from the Crowninshield descendants and this document has never before been offered for sale.

Description
(St. Paul, MN: White Pine Bureau), 1940. First edition of each issue. Small 4to. 26 volumes, six issues per volume [only three for volume one, number five in volume six never published], generally 16 heavily illustrated pages per issue. 148 [of 152 published] issues, lacking vol. I, number one; vol. XVIII, number one; vol. XXII, number five; and vol. XXVI, number three. "A landmark publication of drawings, photographs, and descriptions of early American architecture … [later the editor] modified the focus of the series, including documentation of churches and public buildings and the recording of interiors and millwork details. He also expanded the geographic scope of the project, documenting buildings in the southern states" (Wikipedia). Generally each monograph was written by an expert in the area to be discussed, including architecture of a particular region or town, churches of a region, individual early houses or other buildings, fences and other structures, doorways and other millwork, etc. Near complete runs in original wrappers are uncommon. Other than the defect noted and a little storage soiling, very good or better copies throughout. All 148 issues in original printed wrappers (detached on vol. I, numbers two and three). (#7794).

Description
4to. One-page, approximately 225 words, in part: “Mr. Calhoun’s resolution to repeal the Monroe bill of last winter, will again give rise to a discussion of the powers of the general government. Altho’ the attitude assumed by South Carolina fully justified the enactment of the law that was passed, yet of the necessity which produced it, has passed by, and the danger which then threatened the union no longer exists, would it not be prudent to repeal the act, prefaced by a suitable preamble, and thereby remove the ostensible cause of present discontent on the part of Carolina. I am so heartily attached to the Union … that I would make any concession of expediency, not affecting principle, to maintain it.” Old fold lines, but very good.

A good copy with overall uniform darkening to text pages; two fldg. plates with repaired tears (no loss)
Description
Philadelphia: B Warner, 1821. First American Edition.. full contemp. calf.. A good copy with overall uniform darkening to text pages; two fldg. plates with repaired tears (no loss). 8vo. There are four hand colored fldg. plates (one a startling head section). This is the only printing to contain colored illustrations; the first was prtd. in London in 1806 as a sm. folio but the illus. to it are no larger than this American printing. There is a startling, dramatic section of the head and ear. Saunders is best known for his book on the eye. He was the first to advise paracentesis in acute middle ear supparation. An important book and early American color plate production. The book utilizes an American made paper of a particular kind that naturally darkens over the years. This is specific to the paper stock and is notable in a number of books printed in Philadelphia in these years. G - M # 3362 citing the English editon of 1806.

Description
London: R. Baldwin, J. Richardson [et al.], 1763. 8vo, viii, 16 plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; 19th century full sheep, black morocco label on spine; some scuffing and wear, margins tight on first and last several leaves with occasional shaving of a catchword; a good, sound copy with the approbation leaf, in which George III (to whom the book is dedicated) grants Fenning a license to print his dictionary for a period of 14 years. Little is known of Fenning. He was a compiler of several school texts, including an arithmetic, a geography, and a speller, the last of which had notable popularity in America before Webster. Webster himself was no doubt well acquainted with Fenning's speller, which in London made a 71st edition in 1823. This dictionary contains terms used in mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, architecture, printing, natural history and navigation, with "each word followed by an initial letter to denote the part of speech" --the first time I believe in a dictionary. A competent, trustworthy dictionary on "so extensive a plan as to unite the different excellencies of all other English dictionaries." Alston V, 288; Kennedy 6259.

Description
1960. [Disability Rights][Disability Activism] Braille Institute of America photo archive documenting blind and low-vision adults at the Institute's Los Angeles facility, recording the everyday work of disability education before the Americans with Disabilities Act made access and public accommodation a national civil-rights mandate. J. Robert Atkinson founded the Universal Braille Press in Los Angeles in 1919 after losing his sight in 1912; the organization later became the Braille Institute of America, moved to Vermont Avenue in 1939, and expanded into a new William Pereira designed facility that opened in 1974. The Institute's early work also helped shape national access to reading: Atkinson's lobbying preceded the 1931 Pratt-Smoot Act, which placed federal funds under the Library of Congress to provide books for blind adult readers. The activities shown here matter because literacy, handwork, movement, performance, and social gathering were not secondary amenities; they were the practical means by which blind and low-vision people gained public presence, skill, confidence, and community in a city built overwhelmingly for sighted people. Photo archive of 26 total images printed across 11 silver gelatin prints, Los Angeles, California, circa 1960s to 1970s. Images show the outside of the building with the sign "Braille Institute of America Inc." while a man stands with a guide dog and later walks toward the entrance under the covered walkway. Interior scenes include adults reading braille at tables, visitors talking together around tables, and a smiling man sculpting clay at a worktable. Weaving instruction appears at a tabletop loom; other scenes show clay or tactile craft work, and participants gathered around tables with guide dogs resting beside their handlers. Several images show black and white participants on a dance floor One sheet is a print of 12 enlarged film strip cells, and four sheets contain two images printed on a single sheet. The archive belongs to a longer twentieth-century history in which blind Americans fought for access not only to books, but to streets, schools, workrooms, libraries, and ordinary public life. White cane laws, including early municipal ordinances in the 1930s and later state protections, made the cane and guide dog public signals of mobility and right of way, while federal braille and talking-book programs made reading a public responsibility rather than a private burden. The Braille Institute provided adults in the Los Angeles area a resource to read by touch, shape clay, work at looms, dance with partners, move with guide dogs, and participate in many other activities where disability was not an obstacle for culture, learning, or socializing. All sheets complete, with light handling wear only; overall in very good condition.
