Description
[various places in Japan, 1880. Two oblong albums, 15 1/2 x 11 in., bound in 3/4 leather and koi fish patterned cloth. A collection of images of shrines, river views, hotels, natural settings, and villages of 19th century Japan. Studio photos laid down on stiff card stock mounted on cloth tape stubs. Images are on rectos and versos of the card stock, one to a page, each 7 3/4 x 10 1/4 in. Most are identified with printed captions and numbers. Some light rubbing to leather and soiling to binding, but overall very good, images all sharp, clear. Many can be recognized as the work of Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943) or his studio. The first album of 62 hand-tinted albumen photos are primarily views of Nikko, a small city in the mountains north of Tokyo, famous for the Shinto shrine Tochigi. Photos include a group of stone statues lining a path; Chiusenji Lake; a Sacred Bridge; Dainichido Garden; Iyemitsu Tomb; Yomeimon, Great Gate; etc. There are also more general images of a flower seller; women gathering tea leaves; a sleeping girl; a tattooed man; a basket cellar; rice planters; and a photo of a group of Japanese men and women posing with five Western men and women at tea in a room in front of a painted screen. Perhaps someone in this group was the owner of the albums. The second album of 40 hand-tinted, and 6 untinted albumen photos show views from Matsushima; Honmoku, near Yokohama; Noge Hill, Yokohama; the Room of Hot Spring Place, Hakone; Spring Scenes of Koganei near Tokyo; Nishi Honganji Temple Carving Gate at Kioto; Kurodani Graveyard at Kioto; any many more. Cameras for the amateur photographer were just beginning to become available in the 1880s, so travellers were still dependent on other ways of capturing their memories. Professional photographers often supplied images of tourist spots, either individually or in souvenir albums available for purchase. Many, if not all of the images in these two albums are products of the photographic studio of Kusakabe Kimbei in Yokohama. Although they do not bear his stamp, the numbered photos and captions can be identified in catalogues of his work. Kusakabe Kimbei trained under Felice Beato (ca.1825-1907), an Italian living in Japan, first as a colorist and later as a photographer. He opened his own studio in 1881 and his images often captured the fast vanishing world of old Japan. [see: Chris Kincaid's essay "Felice Beato and Kimbei Kusakabe, Photographers of 1800s Japan," (Japan Powered: 2018)].

Description
Mostly Flagstaff, Arizona; also San Francisco, 1967. Very good. 81 items ranging from 2¼" x 3¼" to 6" x 10½": see description for details. Generally very good or better: a few items gently worn and a few like new. This is a collection of letters, forms, reports and printed ephemera showing the drive of African American residents of Flagstaff, Arizona to increase membership in their local NAACP chapter. A few items also represent the San Francisco NAACP, including a typed letter signed by a noted female leader. The end days of World War II saw an influx of Black migration to the small logging town of Flagstaff for sawmill and lumber work. Where the 1930 census reported 115 African American residents, that of 1950 claimed 667. The town stayed segregated, with Black and Mexican homes and businesses lying south of the railroad tracks. The Northern Arizona chapter of the NAACP was founded in Flagstaff in 1951 by a group that included Annie Watkins. A former school teacher, Watkins turned to local politics when she saw that Black voters' ballots were being thrown away. She was vice chair of the county Democratic committee and led voter registration drives and education sessions for the Black community. This small collection shows the growth of the Flagstaff chapter in the 1960s, and includes 56 membership campaign envelopes filled out with names and addresses. There are membership cards, reports, endorsed checks and handwritten notes on officers, members and donations. Autograph and typed signed letters to New York headquarters reveal donations and requests for recruitment material, there's a response on HQ letterhead, and most are in their original envelopes. Notably, one of these envelopes holds pristine printed materials including a photographic brochure and the NAACP Life Membership Bulletin of June 1962, which ran "Civil Rights Round-Up" news, upcoming events and "sales hints." Three items reflect similar work in California, including a TLS on San Francisco chapter letterhead from Acting Regional Secretary Tarea Hall Pittman, asking branches to send in their 1960 reports. Pittman had been president of the California State Association of Colored Women's Clubs and of the California Council of Negro Women, and served as Director of the NAACP West Coast Region from 1961 to 1965. Vivid documentation of the efforts of African Americans to organize in Arizona and California. An inventory of contents is available.

Very Good+ in Good dj
Description
New York: Green Circle Books. Very Good+ in Good dj. (c.1936). First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [solid copy, a bit soiled on top edge, property stamps of Ross's News Store, Scranton, Pa. on front pastedown and ffep (no other markings of any kind); jacket is worn and soiled, with tiny bits of paper loss at several corners and edges]. "A startling novel of love, crime and redemption, by an Illustrious Anonymous Author." OK, now hold it just a minute -- is it really possible to be both "illustrious" and "anonymous"? I mean, really, what's the point in THAT? Anyway, this seems like a thoroughgoing potboiler, about a "prominent criminal attorney, well versed in the art of fixing juries," who falls in love with a debutante, who is also loved by "daring young news photographer" Jimmy Cronin. The flies in the ointment of this three-way romance are gangster brothers Butch and Larry McCabe, disgruntled clients of the aforementioned lawyer, and the ensuing plot involves "an avalanche of masterfully portrayed incidents including a jail-break and the appearance of a mysterious nun on an ocean voyage." That's right, a mysterious nun. .
