Description
The Corporation of the City of New York, 1865. Decorative Cloth. Very Good +. The complete run of the Civil War years of the highly-influential mid-19th century history of New York City, universally known simply as Valentine's Manual. 4 of the 5 volumes are inscribed by the author, D.T. Valentine, to his good friend, White Plains, NY lawyer S.L.A. Ward. All 5 of the volumes --thick, uniform 12mos-- are solid and easily VG+ in their blindstamped bevelled boards, with intricate gilt-design and titling along both the front panels and spines. Each volume is 800-900 pages or more and each boasts dozens and dozens of fold-out plates (many of them in rich chromolithography). A bit of fading --with a touch of rubbing as well-- along 2 of the spines but the set is solid, well-preserved and very presentable. Uncommon as such, with this complete arc of the Civil War years and with all but one of the volumes signed by the formidable D.T. Valentine.

Description
St. Andrews: W.C. Henderson & Son, 1897 Book. Illus. by Bannerman, A. Islay. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 3rd Edition. Third edition (illustrated edition). Octavo, 9x6¾ inches. x, 35pp.+plates. Full page illustrations by A. Islay Bannerman. Original dark green cloth with gilt title, borders, and vignette. All edges gilt, coated endpapers. Bookplate. Inner front hinge cracked, inner rear hinge starting, corners just showing, minor soiling and slight bend to front cover. Overall, a very good copy. Presentation inscription, SIGNED by the author "To D. Moir with J.E.T's kind regards". Scarce, thus. This long poem in doggerel rhyme, about a game of golf between "The Skipper" and the Devil (Deil), was originally published in 1893. It was privately printed by the author for distribution among his friends, and was under the pseudonym Violet Flint. It was met with such enthusiasm that it was published again the following year and sold publicly. This third edition was printed in 1897, and includes 8 whimsical, full-page illustrations not found in the previous editions. This edition was printed in at least three other bindings, (white cloth, and blue or red printed wrappers); this binding of dark green cloth appears to be less common. Description
Mexico, 1904. Good.. Map, 31 x 41 inches. Old folds; slight loss and wear at some folds, wear and chipping at edges. Lightly toned at folds, minor soiling. A large and wonderful map depicting the streetlight illumination of Mexico City. The map puts the Alameda Central at the center of the sheet, with eight outlined districts divided around it. A key provides a series of varying red dots which denote streetlights at various bulb levels, as well as those planned for an increase. Green lines show electric lines both planned and in place. Various railroads snake throughout the city, with the central train yard featured in the upper left center. The area with the most illumination left to do is the eighth district, centered on the Paseo de la Reforma. Though the Paseo does have a series of lamps in place, most of the rest of the area around it does not, as it is still under development. We find no copies of this map in OCLC, though with maps that is not uncommon. A fascinating look at the modernization and electrification of Mexico City at the turn of the 20th century.

Description
TLS. 1pg. 6 x 9 . September 11, 1974. The White House. A typed letter signed Betty Ford as First Lady on White House letterhead. She wrote to Mrs. Perkins McGuire: How sweet of you to send us the magazine from Spain. Little did I ever think that the Fords would have pictures in a foreign magazine. We were quite lucky that my assistants husband is a Spanish professor and he was able to read the article for us. Many thanks again for being so thoughtful, and Jerry joins me in sending our warm regards. McGuire, whom the letter is addressed to, served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Eisenhower, and was later appointed by President Nixon to be Chairman of the Commission on Government Procurement. The letter has two mailing folds and is in fine condition; it is accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
