London: Dean & Son, 1860. Hardcover. Very good. Large 8vo. Colored upper board, cloth spine, rear board printed in black on purple paper with a list of Dean's "New Series of Strüwelpeters". Illustrated with eight full page hand-colored woodcuts. The page following the last of the illustrations contains a carved face of the "jolly old man" about an inch high which penetrates right through the book to the front cover, the faces of the woodcuts being cut away . Beneath each plate is a rhyming verse about the activities of the Jolly Old Man. Additional publisher's advertisements are on the pink endpapers. Apparently respined at an early date, with some glue residue along the inner hinges. Boards are soiled with rubbed corners and edges; there is some paper loss to the rear board just affecting the numbers of the Strüwelpeter list. Overall a very good copy and a scarce survival.

Bordentown, New Jersey: Manual Training School, 1954. Very good -. 10¾” x 8”. Vinyl blue wraps, embossed in blind, cover title gilt. Pp. [60]. Very good minus: wrappers moderately creased, lightly soiled and edgeworn; first two leaves with 3” tear from bottom edge; light creases and soil spots throughout; a few red inked notations. This is a rare yearbook documenting the penultimate year of a school for Black youth in New Jersey referred to as the “Tuskegee of the North.” The Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youth, known also as the Ironsides Normal School, Bordentown School and a few other names, was founded in 1886 by the formerly enslaved Rev. Walter A. Rice, a minister in the AME Church. The year-round, residential school earned a reputation for its elite vocational and academic training, as well as the successful careers of its graduates. Visiting lecturers included Mary McLeod Bethune, W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, Paul Robeson and Albert Einstein. It opened to students of all races in 1948 but was ordered to close in June 1955 by New Jersey Governor Robert B. Meyner, who cited its failure to recruit and retain white students. The property transitioned into a controversial youth prison for girls; as of November 2024 New Jersey social justice groups were working toward its closure. This yearbook features large, lovely images of the school and its very nearly all-Black faculty and administration, along with individual portraits listing involvements and “ambition” of the graduating class, their baby photos, superlatives and a charming “Class Will.” There are group shots of the lower classes, student clubs, sports teams and groups such as band, the “Library Council,” “Majorettes” and “Modern Dance Group.” It also ran the “Alma Mater Song” and a terrific two-page photo montage showing school and student life. Along with several pages of ads at the rear, there is a great two-page printed assemblage of hand-drawn calling cards for local shops and services. A few inked circles and arrows in this yearbook point out William Tolliver of the sophomore class; he served as “Acting President” and on the “Ironsides Improvement League.” While we can't be sure it's him, we did find an obituary online for a New Jersey-born man whose name and age match up; he was an Air Force medic for 27 years (with a tour in Vietnam), graduated from the Defense Race Relations Institute and served as an instructor to Defense and Pentagon staff. He then moved to California, where he was Equal Opportunity Officer and Director of Mental Health for Merced County, as well as president of his NAACP chapter. A rare yearbook for a noted Black school in New Jersey, issued one year before its closure. Not found in OCLC, which shows two entries for earlier yearbooks (called Ironsides) with only three total issues at two institutions. We also note an entry for The Ironsides Echo, apparently a monthly periodical, with limited holdings at three institutions.

"In this landmark of theoretical population ecology Lotka attempted to provide for parts of biology a basis comparable to that given by theoretical physics to experimental physics. This was the first great exposition and elaboration of Verhulst's logistic. ALFRED JAMES LOTKA (1880 - 1949) was an American mathematician, physical chemist, and statistician, famous for his work in population dynamics and energetics. The Lotka-Volterra model is still the basis of many models used in the analysis of population dynamics in ecology. Lotka proposed that natural selection was, at its root, a struggle among organisms for available energy; organisms that survive and prosper are those that capture and use energy at a rate and efficiency more effective than that of its competitors. Lotka extended his energetic framework to human society. In particular, he suggested that the shift in reliance from solar energy to nonrenewable energy would pose unique and fundamental challenges to society. These theories made Lotka an important forerunner to the development of biophysical economics and ecological economics, advanced by Frederick Soddy, Howard Odum and others. While at Johns Hopkins, Lotka completed his book Elements of Physical Biology (offered here) in which he extended the work of Pierre François Verhulst. His first book summarizes his previous work and organizes his ideas of unity and universality of physical laws, making his works accessible to other scientists. PROVENANCE: JAN BEVINGTON GILLETT (1911-1995), English botanist at Kew, was a leading researcher in tropical African botany. He served as Botanist in Charge of the East African Herbarium, Nairobi, and made significant collections in Iraq as well as Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Three broadsheets showing the development of advertising material for the documentary by Joe Pacheco about One Ring Zero, the "house band" for the McSweeney's Store in Brooklyn and their collaborations with McSweeney's roster of authors. Readings at the store would be accompanied by One Ring Zero; the band solicited lyrics from the authors and created an album of the resulting songs -- "As Smart as We Are"; and Pacheco made a movie about the process, and created the advertising for a benefit screening. Included here: a 13" x 19" color photo by Pacheco of the postal shelving used by the store, with one odd object per cubbyhole; a second 13" x 19" poster replacing some of those objects with authors and the band One Ring Zero; and a third, finished poster, 11" x 17", replacing some of those authors with text advertising the benefit screening (at 826NYC, as the Store had closed by 2005).
