Description
Veracruz: Imprenta del Comercio, 1848. Very good.. 28pp. Original printed, blue wrappers. Faint dampstain at lower corner; minor wear and soiling. A rare appeal from the city of Veracruz to the Mexican national congress to abolish the country's tobacco monopoly once and for all in the wake of the Mexican-American War. The monopoly had its roots in Spanish colonial Mexico, when the monarchy introduced it to help replenish the bankrupt treasury after the Seven Years' War, and it controlled every aspect of tobacco production and sales. The monopoly continued after independence, though at different times different group controlled in organization and profits. This address from Veracruz officials appeals to spirit of Mexican independence to reject what amounted to a legacy of colonialism, to a sense of fairness to allow farmer and business owners to produce as they saw fit, and to the opportunity for economic improvement by referring to superior economic data in other countries. Recorded in OCLC, but without location.

Description
1898. With Illustrations by E.W. Kemble. New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1898. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated and embossed in gilt and black, with cover illustration affixed. First Edition of Dunbar's first volume of fiction, preceded by three volumes of verse -- OAK AND IVY (1893), MAJORS AND MINORS (1895) and LYRICS OF LOWLY LIFE (1896). This is a collection of twelve short stories about "Negro Life" in the South; Dunbar's third-person narration is in proper English, but the dialogue is in the dialect that he (as an African-American whose parents were born into slavery) knew so well. "At Shaft 11" is an interesting tale of racial discord and harmony that takes place during a violent strike at a West Virginia coal mine: a crew of black "scabs" is sent in by management to replace striking white miners. The illustrations (two of which are in color) are by E.W. Kemble, who also illustrated some Joel Chandler Harris books; the binding design (initialed) is by George Wharton Edwards. This is a bright, fine copy, with scarcely any wear. Blanck 4921.

Description
New York: American Book Exchange, 1880. Hardcover. Fair. First edition, from Scottish sheets. 24mo. Illustrated (although we aren't convinced there are 250). Diagonal finely ribbed maroon cloth with cover and spine stamped in black, and cover design repeated in blind on the lower board. Covers nearly separated, heavy wear, tape residue on the shoulders and gutters (affecting the inner margin of a couple of leaves), a few preliminary and terminal leaves loose (but complete), a fair copy. The text is surprisingly clean. Also prints several pages of foreign words and phrases. A very uncommon dictionary; *OCLC* locates one copy of this 1880 edition and one copy of an 1881 edition, both at Harvard.
