Description
ILLUMINATED MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT IN LATIN ON PARCHMENT, Northern Italy, c. 1440-1470. 203 x 153 mm. 70 folios, complete (collation, i-vii10), remnants of quire and leaf signatures, flourished vertical catchwords, written in a humanist minuscule on 30 long lines (justification, 147-149 x 95-100 mm), horizontal lines ruled very lightly in ink, single vertical bounding lines ruled in lead, prickings remain in top and bottom margins on some leaves, rubrics and paragraph marks in pale red, two-line red or blue initials with contrasting pen flourishes in violet or red, two five-line blue initials, ff. 29v and 35, infilled and on square grounds of elaborate penwork; f. 64v, seven-line polished GOLD INITIAL with white vinestem decoration extending along twenty lines of text and into the upper margin, infilled and edged in deep red and blue with numerous tiny silver dots; f. 1, five-line polished GOLD HISTORIATED INITIAL of St. Jerome, bearded and dressed in red, standing before a Crucifix, with a hilly landscape in the background, on a white vinestem ground, extending into a FULL WHITE VINESTEM BORDER infilled and edged in deep red and blue with tiny silver dots and an erased coat of arms in lower margin, with modern? F.A.. BINDING: Early, almost certainly contemporary, reddish-brown leather over wooden boards, flat spine with three slightly raised bands, head and tail bands, clasp and catch fastening, front to back, with brass catch lettered ave, front cover decorated, most likely in the nineteenth century, with an attractive painted border in green, orange, and gray, connecting four brass studs, and the title, De laudibus et miraculis divi Hieronymi, with initials F.C. at the bottom, back pastedown is leaf from a late fourteenth-century Italian copy of Donatuss Latin grammar, front pastedown shows offset script from removed pastedown from a fourteenth-century Italian text in Latin verse. TEXT: This manuscript is a vivid witness to the importance of St. Jerome in fifteenth-century Italy, and includes the foundational texts for his cult: three letters regarding his death, miracles, and titles to glory and veneration and purporting to be written by three contemporaries of St. Jerome (c. 347-420), namely St. Eusebius of Cremona (d. 423), St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430), and Bishop Cyril of Jerusalem (c. 313-386), but probably written in Rome at the end of the thirteenth or beginning of the fourteenth century; a life of St. Jerome by an unknown author, probably writing in Italy in the twelth century; and Jeromes own life of St. Paul the Hermit, written in 374 or 375. These texts were widely disseminated in both Latin and in vernacular translations, and they influenced the work of numerous writers and visual artists. ILLUSTRATION: The iconographical choice in the historiated initial (f. 1) to depict the ascetic Jerome contemplating the Crucifixion dates from c. 1400 in Italy, and can be particularly associated with Hieronymite congregations in Tuscany. PROVENANCE: Copied in Northern Italy in the middle years of the fifteenth century, as suggested by the evidence of the script and decoration; the penwork initials in particular seem to point to Northern Italy. The manuscript almost certainly once included the coat of arms of its original owner in the lower margin of the illuminated border on f. 1. Three sets of initials are inscribed, in three different hands, all possibly initials of owners: within the roundel on f. 1 a modern owner inscribed an outline of a shield in pen and the initials F.A.; inside front cover, white embossed seal, with the initials L.F.; on front cover, as part of the added decoration, F[?]. C[?]. CONDITION: Slight loss of the leather at the back, top of the spine, and over the lower band of the binding; top of the painted border on f. 1 is very slightly trimmed; f. 1 is darkened; and there is some soiling throughout, but overall in very good condition. Full description and photos available (TM 656).

Description
London: John Hinton, (1770 - 1782). First edition of each. 20 half-year volumes published from Jan. 1770 to Dec. 1780 (i.e., six monthly issues in each) COVERING BRITISH REACTION TO AND VERSIONS OF INCIDENTS LEADING UP TO AND DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. Missing only 2 volumes from an 11-year run. "The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure" was a British monthly published from 1747 to 1814 that covered all manner of subjects and news both "Instructive and Entertaining." This early British printing of the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE appears in the August 1776 issue, Vol. 59, pp. 91-93, under the heading "American Intelligence," preceded by a play synopsis and followed by a section of poetry and music. Its appearance in the index is equally subtle -- perhaps owing to the delicacy of printing anything that might be construed as opposing King George. It's unobtrusively listed twice in the index among various items under sub-headings "Americans" and "Colonies" as "their declaration 91 - style themselves independent 93." THE 20 VOLUMES COLLECTED HERE represent a wide range of reportage on issues relating to the American fight for independence, interspersed with local and worldwide news, entertainment, natural history, science, etc. EACH VOLUME IS APPROXIMATELY 375 pages and includes the twice-yearly "Supplement" issue with further content, indexes for the preceding 6 months, and directions for binding each half-year volume. THIS NEARLY COMPLETE RUN of 108 issues in 20 bound volumes with Supplements includes JANUARY 1770 to JUNE 1773, Vols. 46-52 (Vol. 53, Jul-Dec 1773 missing); JANUARY 1774 to JUNE 1775, Vols. 54-56 (Vol. 57, Jul-Dec 1775 missing); and JANUARY 1776 to DECEMBER 1780, Vols. 58-67. The magazine was illustrated with various single and folding plates showing busts of noted figures, coats of arms, animals, vegetation, manner of attire, views of various areas and architecture, illustrations from books and plays, scientific and mechanical items, methods of manufacture, maps, etc., some of which were colored. Quite a number of the plates were previously removed from these volumes - most notably ALL OF THE MAPS ARE MISSING, as are most of the coats of arms and animal illustrations (a few of the latter two remain). There are still significant illustrations included, most NOTABLY STILL PRESENT is folding plate "A VIEW OF THE CITY OF BOSTON THE CAPITAL OF NEW ENGLAND" in the March 1775 issue illustrating a 6-page article, "Observations on the State of Boston, Massachuset's-Bay [sic], and Other Colonies"; and "HEAD OF DR. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN" in the September 1777 issue, illustrating Chapter XII of "A Concise History..." (see more on below): "Dr. Franklin's Conduct amid the American Troubles--His Interesting Letters to Governor Shirley--Disturbances in the Colonies on Account of the Revenue Laws--Resolutions of the Inhabitants of Boston" (6 pp.). Also present in these volumes are the FIRST 45 CHAPTERS of "A CONCISE HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN AND PROGRESS OF THE PRESENT UNHAPPY DISPUTES BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN AND THE AMERICAN COLONIES," beginning with Chapter I in the October 1776 issue. (The series ran to 67 chapters and concluded in June 1783 as "A Concise History of the Origin and Progress of the late Civil War between Great Britain and America"). It's difficult to adequately describe the breadth of material in these volumes. Each one has descriptions of battles in America and reportage on battles around the world; descriptions of actions in Parliament and activities of the King; monthly Stock Prices charts; poems, songs, advice on conduct, gossip, trials, Histories of England; etc., etc., etc. THE 1770 VOLUMES ALONE reprint the LETTERS OF JUNIUS from the Public Advertiser and cover the trial of the original publisher of the letters; cover the trial of Ebenezer Richardson, print extracts of 2 letters giving wholly different accounts of the Boston Massacre, and cover the acquittal of Captain Preston for his actions therein; print a brief abstract of the partial repeal of the Townshend Revenue Act that, notably, retained the duties on tea; print a letter of thanks to South Carolina from the "Society of the Gentlemen Supporters of the Bill of Rights in London" for its donation (which lead to the "Wilkes Fund Controversy"); and print an abstract from Edmund Burke's "Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents" (7 pp.). Twenty 8vo volumes uniformly bound in quarter vellum with marbled paper sides and all edges red; hand numbered and dated on spines. Spines and edges considerably worn but all bindings still sound. Evidence of bookplate removal in each (exposing the boards in some). There is the occasional chip, tear or small hole but, for the most part, the text blocks are remarkably free from wear. ALSO INCLUDED is a defective copy of the Jan.-Jun. 1881 volume with Chapters 46 to 51 of "A Concise History," a PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, and folding plate depicting the DEATH OF CAPTAIN COOK (missing unrelated pages). ALSO a defective copy (nearly disbound) of the Jan.-Jun. 1882 volume with Chapters 56 to 61 of "A Concise History," extracts from Robert Robinson's "A Political Catechism," various discussions and debates about the war and American independence, etc.

Description
[Hawaii, 1953. Very good.. [80]pp. Original textured pictorial wrappers, stapled. Minor toning, soiling, and rubbing to wrappers. A rare and densely-packed program issued for the tenth anniversary of the U.S. Army's 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the highly-decorated Japanese-American unit which played an important role in World War II. The program contains historical background on the 442nd, separate accounts of their basic training and combat experiences, information on the 442nd's Veterans Club in Hawaii, and much more. The centerfold contains the "Official Itinerary" of events for the two-week celebration of the unit, held between July 20 and August 1, 1953. The handsomely-produced program is replete with dozens of photographs and legions of advertisements interspersed throughout the work. The 442nd Infantry Regiment was composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry (Nisei). They trained at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, Mississippi, not far from places like Rohwer and Jerome, Arkansas, where Japanese-Americans were interned during World War II. When many of their families were imprisoned in camps within the United States, the 442nd fought with outsized courage and uncommon distinction in Italy, Germany, and southern France, living up to their motto to "Go for broke." Over 800 Japanese-Americans would be killed or declared missing in action during their brief stint in the war, an unusually-high percentage relative to their force numbers. But they would also earn unusually-high combat rewards, including seven Distinguished Unit citations, one of them awarded by President Truman himself, who remarked on July 15, 1946, "You've fought not only the enemy...you fought prejudice and won." Japanese-American service members also earned twenty Medals of Honor, 4,000 Purple Hearts, twenty-nine Distinguished Service Crosses, 588 Silver Stars, and more than 4,000 Bronze Stars for World War II alone. Since the Second World War, the 442nd has become the most highly decorated military unit in the history of the United States Armed Forces, with twenty-one Medal of Honor recipients and 9,486 Purple Hearts. OCLC reports just two institutional holdings, at the U.S. Army War College and the University of Hawaii.
