Description
New York 1856, Putnam. Tall folio, single hand colored litho of "PASSING THE RUBICON," 82.5 x 56.5 cm., slight browning, marginal tears, mounted on a stiff cardboard, VERY R A R E ! This work preceded the famous three volume set published in 1856: THE JAPAN EXPEDITION. GRAPHIC SCENES OF THE JAPAN EXPEDITION was a spectacular work and contained 10 hand tinted large and nine smaller colored lithographs to document the arrival of Perry & his Squadron. * Most were drawn by Heine the young German who was the expedition artist. The complete work includes: 1. PORTRAIT OF M.C. PERRY. 2. MACAO FROM PENHA HILL. 3. PAGODA OF WHAMPOA. 4. OLD CHINA STREET IN CANTON. 5. KUNG-TWA, AT ON-NA, LEW CHEW. 6. MIA, OR ROADSIDE CHAPEL AT YOKU-HAMA. 7. TEMPLE AT BEN-TENG,IN THE HARBOR OF SIMODA. 8. STREET & BRIDGE AT SIMODA. 9. TEMPLE OF THE HA-TSHU-MAN-YA TSCHU-RO, AT SIMODA. 10. GRAVEYARD AT THE SIMODA, DIO ZENGE. * Of these exceedingly RARE lithographs one prints is now offered: PASSING THE RUBICON documents the event of July 11, 1853 wherein Lt. Silas Bent from the Mississippi's first cutter confronted Japanese guard boats and a coastal Junk. This is illustrated in S. Morrison: "OLD BRUIN" COMMODORE MATTHEW CALBRAITH PERRY on p.327. This scene shows the American sounding party at work on Monday morning [July 11th], "...when a flotilla of thirty to forty guard boats filled with soldiers who presented quite a bristling front with their spears and matchlocks, while their lacquered caps and shields flashed brightly in the sun confronted the flag launch under charge of Lt. Bent & the senior Japanese officer made minatory gestures with his iron fan and yelled orders which nobody in the American launch understood. The Lieutenant, anxious to avoid a crash, altered his collision course but dispatched another boat to the Mississippi to ask Capt. Lee to move closer. On the steamer's approach the guard boats retired. And Perry named the nearest point of land 'Point Rubicon' because no foreign ship had passed it for three centuries." See Morrison p.328. * The lithograph PASSING THE RUBICON is 83 x 56.5 cm. overall, print size is 83 x 49.5 cm., with top and side edges trimmed, bottom edge slightly trimmed; overall browned with some surface scuffs, tears, laid down on an old cardboard, complete illustration present, with minor faults. * The complete title reads: PASSING THE RUBICON. Lieut's. Bent in the Mississippi's First Cutter Forcing His Way Through a fleet of Japanese Boats While Surveying the Bay of Yedo, July 11th., 1853. To Commodore M.C. Perry, Officers and men of the Japan Expedition this print is respectfully dedicated by their Obt. Servths [sic]. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: R. Pineau: THE JAPAN EXPEDITION 1852-1854 THE PERSONAL JOURNAL OF COMMODORE MATTHEW C. PERRY, after p.156 & before p.167, color illustrations. * THE PAUL C. BLUM COLLECTION CATALOGUE OF BOOKS, Yokohama Archives of History vol.4 no.4395. * H. Cordier: BIBLIOTHECA JAPONICA, p.513-518. **** By and large any of these prints from this work is exceptionally rare, and seldom if ever found on the market for sale.

Description
20/11/1822. Dearborn, son of General Henry Dearborn, was Collector of the Port of Boston and the first president of the Massachusetts Horticultural SocietyHenry Alexander Scammell Dearborn was a Massachusetts politician and author, and son of the Revolutionary War General, Henry Dearborn. In 1822, he was serving as the Collector of the Port of Boston and was an active member of several historical and scientific societies (he was the first President of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society). He was also a general in the state militia. Dearborn engaged in correspondence with both John Adams, who was 87 years old at the time, and John Quincy Adams, who was Secretary of State. On November 20, 1822, Adams wrote Dearborn a letter, thanking him for sending along a work related to Revolutions. He wrote, ""I know of no Monument that has ever yet been erected in America, of persevering application and indefatigable research, which has resulted in such a Mass of knowledge, as it relates to regions which will infallibly attract the attention of mankind, for Centuries to come, more than any other; and produce Revolutions, which no human sagacity can foresee in detail.""This is the free frank from that letter. The letter is likely addressed by Adams' granddaughter: “Quincy, Ms, November 20, 1822,” the word “Free,” and the addressee “Genl. H.A.S. Dearborn, Boston.” Adams has then signed and added the word “Roxbury,” indicating that the letter would more likely to reach Dearborn there. Roxbury was the place Dearborn lived. Adams had developed a condition later in life that made writing difficult and created hand tremors.

Description
[Persia],: undated [pre-1800]., 1800. 11.25 x 7.5 inches. [ca. 228 leaves] Written mostly in old Farsi, with some Arabic marginal notes. With one leaf [f. 66] illuminated on upper quadrant, another 2 leaves with a penciled sketch where an illumination was planned but never completed [ff. 108, 170]. There are numerous decorative motifs of flowers throughout the manuscript. Each leaf is variously partitioned, perhaps suggestive of a garden[!], in this case with flowers adorning most leaves. Binding style suggests 18-19th centuries. Bound in Islamic style, Ottoman period, full Turkey morocco, with elaborate gilt rule, corner and centre ornamental flourishes, with leather flap; some minor repairs to the sides of the binding are evident when examined closely. MANUSCRIPT OF SAADI' GOLESTAN THE GREAT PERSIAN POET: ORIGINAL COMPLETE MANUSCRIPT OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL PERSIAN POETS, SA'ADI OF SHIRAZI. The calligraphic style and the binding are suggestive of the 16th or 17th century. This piece is embellished with numerous leaves, many of which are decorated by hand with small compartments of flowers, each realized from the title of Sa'adi's Gulistan [Golestan], Flower Garden of Sa'adi. Sa'adi is "probably the single most influential work of prose in the Persian tradition, completed in 1258 by Mosarref-al-Din Mole, known as Shaikh Sa'di of Shiraz." – Encyclopaedia Iranica. / The manuscript is mixed with both poetry and stories or narratives along with a moral, as well as some commentaries. / PROVENANCE: Signed Kiffin Yates Rockwell (1892–1916) [later label of: Kiffin Ayres Rockwell], Beloit, Wisconsin, June 28, 1942. Kiffin Yates Rockwell was a World War I fighter pilot and the first American to shoot down an enemy aircraft in WWI. He shot down a German pilot. Thus the manuscript is clearly in the United States and kept there since before 1942. "Kiffin Yates Rockwell, the youngest son of James Chester and Loula Ayres Rockwell." [see below]. What may clear up some confusion here is that there are at least two persons with this name and there may be three. Kiffin Ayres Rockwell, II or III (Oct. 8, 1917-Jan. 27, 1998), who served in the air force in Korea, is buried in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Sa'adi opens with poems of Sa'eb of Tabriz, a Safavid poet of Indian style of poetry, added to the text. "Back of the shell, kingly gems are orphans."

Description
Paris: the Author, 1844. FIRST EDITIONS. Double-page lithographed plate. Original printed wrappers bound into modern boards, unopened. Presentation inscription from the author to a Doctor Roser on the front wrapper. Somewhat foxed, otherwise very good. [With:] Anatomie pathologique avec modèles en relief. Paris: the Author 1839. 8vo. xi, 123, [1] pp. Contemporary brown sheep-backed marbled boards. Bound with an incomplete copy of the first title listed. First editions of two texts establishing and cataloging the morbid anatomy cabinet of Félix Thibert. Thibert, a Paris-trained physician, began designing and making pathological models of ailments in the 1830s for the use of other clinicians. They were cast in a paste that hardened to stone-like durability and then painted to mirror the afflicted organ. Thibert’s subjects were usually deceased. In 1844, he opened a “museum” in the Rue Montparnasse showcasing over 2000 of his models of organs and body parts for the use of the clinical community. The first title comprises the inventory of this showroom, classified according to malady: diseases of the skin, eyes, and uterus, syphilitic sores, lesions on internal organs, lesions on external organs, and glanders. He also offered to duplicate any of the models in the museum for a price, listed in a catalog at the end of the book. In his self-published “Anatomie pathologique avec modèles en relief,” Thibert provides case studies of post-mortem examinations, dissections, and subsequent modeling of clinically interesting subjects, including a cancerous tumor, gangrenous colon, cyanide poisoning, and compound fractures. Before the text, he invites medical professionals to his home to view the models during specific hours, and he concludes the book with a catalog of 20 pieces available to order. In each study he describes the piece he created from the ailment, but this book includes no illustrations. We may assume that the cost of publication prohibited the addition of images, especially since Thibert was still showcasing his models in his own home and offering duplicates for sale. It is worth noting that Thibert’s museum received considerable commendation from the Parisian community, such that in 1845 he opened a second showroom in London. Description
New York: Balzer + Bray, 2017. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 5x1x8. First edition. Spine slightly cocked. 2017 Hard Cover. 324 pp. In this stunning debut novel, Pushcart-nominated author Ibi Zoboi draws on her own experience as a young Haitian immigrant, infusing this lyrical exploration of America with magical realism and vodou culture. On the corner of American Street and Joy Road, Fabiola Toussaint thought she would finally find une belle vie - a good life. But after they leave Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Fabiola's mother is detained by U.S. immigration, leaving Fabiola to navigate her loud American cousins, Chantal, Donna, and Princess; the grittiness of Detroit's west side; a new school; and a surprising romance, all on her own. Just as she finds her footing in this strange new world, a dangerous proposition presents itself, and Fabiola soon realizes that freedom comes at a cost. Trapped at the crossroads of an impossible choice, will she pay the price for the American dream
