Description
London: Witherby, 1922. FIRST EDITION. With 90 colored plates of birds by Thorburn, Lodge, Gronvold and others, 88 photogravure plates of habitats and scenery and 20 distribution maps. All tissue guards present. Original cloth, title in gilt on cover and spine; an excellent set. First edition of one of the earliest definitive studies of pheasants in their natural habitats. Only 600 copies were printed of this splendid book on birds, our copy being number 555. “The material for this admirable work on pheasants was collected by the author from, among other sources, his study of the collections of type specimens in the museums of London, Tring, Paris, Berlin and on journey of several months duration to South and East Asia. He, thus, had an opportunity of studying these birds in their natural habitats . . . The plates are beautifully and accurately reproduced” (Anker).

Description
New York: E.B. Treat & Company, 1900. FIRST EDITION. Complete with 9 full-page plates. Publisher’s cloth, author and title in gilt on spine; interior excellent. First edition. The author dedicates the book to the “sexual cripples of the United States.” Apparently at the start of the twentieth century (and before; and after?) sexual debility was a major thing. Certainly enough to warrant this book. Sturgis treats the anatomy and physiology of the male sexual organs, masturbation, sexually-related diseases and the physical causes of sexual impotence. Of particular interest is the various options that a sexually debilitated male can do to reverse the impotence and to avoid sterility. The plates reflect how the various diseases discussed appear under a microscope. There is an extensive bibliography following the text. Sturgis (1844-1919) was an American physician who wrote primarily on venereal diseases, especially syphilis. Cordasco 00-5778; Kelly & Burrage 1179-1180.
