Description
Incredible 1851 LUCRETIA COFFIN MOTT letter on ELIZABETH CADY STANTON, SUFFRAGE Discusses family, abolition and suffrage meetings, work Offered here is an original handwritten letter by Lucretia Coffin Mott (1793-1880), one of the great heroines of the reform movements of American History. She writes to close friends Thomas and Mary Ann McClintock in intimate detail about family matters, and hints at her own health struggles. The content of the letter is rich and extensive, touching on Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, Martha Wright, & Amy Post, Anti-Slavery meetings, logistics for travel and the next major Woman Suffrage gathering, the struggles within their Quaker meetings, slowing down, and passing the torch to a younger generation of reformers.- This has to be one of the finest Lucretia Mott letters in private hands and is unpublished- One of the many interesting facets of this letter is that it is addressed to the McClintocks in Waterloo, New York: Waterloo is where, three years earlier, on July 9, 1848, Lucretia Mott, Mary Ann (Wilson) McClintock, Martha (Coffin) Wright, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, met and resolved to hold the first women's rights convention in the United States (Seneca Falls Convention) that summer. The next week, in preparation for the convention, Mary Ann McClintock hosted another planning meeting, this time at the McClintock House. Here, McClintock, with two of her daughters and Cady Stanton, drafted the Declaration of Sentiments, proclaiming that "all men and women are created equal."Just a few quotes from this letter: "Elizabeth Stanton too I long to meet, and so hoped before this late day, that our talked-of visit to Philada. would come off.""Indeed it is rather surprising that so many of us still cling to it [membership in the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting], after all we have endured, & are constantly enduring.""[M]y hands were full, in helping make or alter carpets & fix houses [for the moves of many family members].""How glad I am that your freedom sits so well on you, after the trial you have had.""James [Mott] is now at Buffalo, with his f[athe]r Richard - will probably leave there today - stop awhile at Rochester...""My sister Martha's love & thanks...""We hear that our Edward Hopper is sick with bilious fever, which is rather prevailing now around our City.""I have had no Public Meeting in this place or neighborhood - for the first time --- An obstinate cough, brought on Dr. Freeman says, by much speak'g, as well as added years, admonish me to lessen these efforts. There are plenty of young & fresh hands." (emphasis added)"I have been corresponding with Lucy Stone and Amy Post on the subject of the next Woman's Convention - whether it shall be held at Worcester, Syracuse, or Rochester. I shall not be likely to attend at either place. Farewell dear Thos. & Mary Ann. Love to child'n all, L. Mott~"Four pages in length, complete and in fine condition, Transcript: Lucretia Mott to Thomas M'Clintock Auburn 8 Mo. 6th. 1851 Dear Thomas M'Clintock I should sooner have replied to thy kind remembrance of me, & invitation to visit you, had not sickness prevented. I have been confined mostly to my bed, for several days past, with a bilious attack, accompanied with sore throat. This is the first effort to hold the pen. It would give me great pleasure to see you all, and have full & free converse on many subjects of interest. But again this year that gratification is denied me. Elizabeth Stanton too I long ^to^ meet and so hoped before this late day, that long talked of visit to Phila. would come off. Why cant yr. Elizh, before being any more closely bound by matrimonial ties, take the other Elizh. & in independent style travel thither? And why did not thou, Thomas, when so near us as New York, let us have a share of thy company? We ought before leaving home, to have acknowledged the reception of an interesting letter from thee -- full of faith in your Congregational Movement, and inviting us to be present at yr. last Yearly. But Jas. wishing to attend the Anniversary ^A.S.^ Mg. at Syracuse, and I expecting to come at this time, with my sister E., we could not make it suit to go there. Our several families were moving out to their purchased Farms -- E. M. Davis', & Thos. Motts' to Montgomery County, & Thos. Cavenders' to Burlington Co. N.J. so that my hands were full in helping make ^or alter^ carpets & fix houses. We like our Community experiment much, & wish you could come, and see how well it works. We heard less of your last Yearly Meeting than of [eith?] of the others. The most entertaining account of it, as well as of S. M. Janney's visit & Meeting, the Truman girls favored us with, in scraps of yr. Mary's letter, I think it was. What arrogance in H. J. Moore, Samuel, & others, to go about endeavoring to proselyte to their narrow way. Samuel has become so conservative that I have lost interest in him. The Proceedings thou speaks of, we shall be glad to have. A few our way, and I am sorry to say, but a few, watch with interest your progress. Jos. A. Dugdale & Ruth were not able to leave their new home in Chester Co. and many cares attendant on moving to an unfinished place. Jas. & self made a pleasant visit there last spring, & thought they would be comfortably settled after some labor, which they & their son are performing. Their Mother, & sister Sally will join them after awhile. Perhaps they are already there. They all with numbers more around Kennett & Marlborough, will be glad to hear, or read of your doings. There is little chance of Joseph's right of membership being recognised in Phila. Yr. Mg. or its branches. Ruth does not value hers the worth of a straw. Indeed it is rather surprising that so many of us still cling to it, after all we have endured, & are constantly enduring. How glad I am that your freedom sits so well on you, after the trial you have had. A letter received from our children yesterday mentioned a call they had had from Wm. L. Fisher, and that "he wished us to bring him whatever there was new from Thomas M'Clintock" -- The Proceedings will hardly reach here in time for us to take, as we expect to leave for home on 6th day. Our br B. H. Yarnall is making his first visit in this Western Country. He is much pleased with this place, as well as with the beautiful travel hither. I wish he could go on west but his time is limited. He arrived yesterdy -- left Thomas Wistar very ill with dysentery -- 88 years old. Have you seen in the Papers that Lindley Coates' ba[rn?] was lately struck with lightning & destroyed. He enlarged it last year for his son's benefit. Lindley's health is very poor. James is now at Buffalo, with his br Richard -- will probably leave there today -- stop awhile at Rochester & reach here late tonight -- so there is no hope of his seeing you at Waterloo. He would like to very well I know. The "matrimonial affair" here is not to be consummated during our stay -- nor for some weeks yet. Our daughr Martha will return here from Buffalo where she now is, and be with her cousin on the interesting occasion. We had greatly hoped another affair of the kind would be happily consummated this summer, & much regretted to learn from Cathr Truman that the dear young people must "wait a little longer" -- but hope all will be well yet. My sister Martha's love, & thanks for your invitation. Her ties here are great just now. We hear that our Edward Hopper is sick with bilious fever, which is rather prevailing now around our City. I have had no public meeting in this place or neighborhood for the first time -- An obstinate cough, brought on Dr Truman says, by much speakg, as well as added years admonish me to lessen these efforts. There are plenty of young & fresh hands. I have been corresponding with Lucy Stone & Amy Post on the subject of the next Woman's Convention -- whether it shall be held at Worcester, Syracuse, or Rochester. I shall not be likely to attend at either place -- Farewell dear Thos. & Mary Ann Love to childn all. L. Mott Env: Thomas M'Clintock Waterloo, N.Y.

Description
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1923 Two volumes. Foreword by Lady Gregory. Later American edition ("Third and Popular Edition"). Signed and inscribed by Hemingway to his cousin, Ruth White Lowry, on front free endpapers of both volumes. Volume I: "Dear Ruth: - These good, solid books are to throw after the American Poetry book at the head of [strikeout] any one [sic] who criticizes the management -- Ernest."; Volume II: "Dear Ruth - This is the second solid volume to throw after the first - Ernest."; Ruth Lowry's ownership signature in pencil on front pastedown of Vol. I. Publisher's dark blue cloth, with title labels to spines printed in black; lacking dust jackets. Very good set, with some toning to spines and labels, light wear to spine ends, light rubbing to front board of Vol. I, Bennett Schneider bookseller tickets to both rear pastedowns, and Bennett Schneider bookmark laid in to Vol. II. Overall, a lovely set, inscribed twice by Hemingway. From the personal library of Hemingway's cousin, Ruth White Lowry. Wilfrid Scawen Blunt (1840 - 1922) was an English poet, diplomat, and outspoken critic of colonialism. Blunt married Lady Anne Noel, the granddaughter of Lord Byron, in 1869, and together they ran the Crabbet Arabian Stud, a prominent horse breeding farm in Sussex, which imported exceptional Arabian horses from the Middle East. Blunt's marriage to Lord Byron's granddaughter was emblematic of his broader aspiration to emulate Byron: much like the renowned Romantic poet, Blunt was a strikingly handsome womanizer, a social outcast, and a world traveler who fought for idealistic causes. Some of the chapter titles in My Diaries illustrate the sweeping range of Blunt's interests and adventures: "A Visit to Greece in 1888," "Egypt under Tewfik in 1889," "A Visit to Tunis and Tripoli," "Satan Absolved - The Boer War," "Literature and Politics," "The French Invade Morocco," and "The War with Germany Declared." Blunt published many works in his lifetime, including The Love Sonnets of Proteus (1881), The Future of Islam (1882), and Satan Absolved: A Victorian Mystery (1899). Blunt and Hemingway were similar in personality and lifestyle, in that they are both remembered not only for their literary contributions, but also for embracing a comprehensive life and valuing the wisdom gained from experiences. . Signed. Later American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

1867. Signed. (HAWAII) SEWARD, William H. Document signed. Washington, DC, September 14, 1867. One sheet of letterhead, measuring 8 by 10 inches, writing on recto. $3800.Letter signed by Secretary of State William H. Seward, on the topic of a potential trade treaty with the Kingdom of Hawaii. The document, in a secretarial hand on Department of State letterhead, reads: ""Washington, Sept 14th, 1867. Mr. A. Delmar. Supdt: Bureau of Statistics. Treasury Department. Sir, Agreeably to your request of this day, communicated through Mr. James Ryan, I enclose you, confidentially, a printed copy of the Convention recently concluded between the United States and the King of the Hawaiian Islands. This document, for the present, can only be used in a confidential manner. I am, Sir, Your Obt. Servant, [signed] William H. Seward.""Although Seward, Secretary of State for both Lincoln and Johnson, is best remembered for the United States' purchase of Alaska in 1867, it was not his only territorial ambition in the Pacific region. Seward was also keenly interested in the acquisition of Hawaii, believing that there was strong interest among Hawaiians (at least the white planter class of Hawaiians) in joining the Union: in 1867 he encouraged, with little success, the idea of annexing Hawaii, and also promoted a reciprocal trade treaty that ultimately failed to achieve congressional support. The recipient, Alexander del Mar (or Delmar), was the first Director of the Bureau of Statistics at the Treasury Department and a noted historian of money. Neither Seward's career at the State Department nor Delmar's at the Treasury survived the transition from Johnson's presidency to Grant's. Suitable for framing.Expected fold lines; two hole punches at top of document.

Small octavo, contemporary three-quarter red morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $1400.A splendid Rubaiyat, illustrated with four plates by Stephen Gooden and handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf.""The favorite gift book of Edwardian times probably was Edward FitzGerald's rendering of The Rubaiyat"" (Hodnett, 226). Composed in 12th-century Persia and rendered into English by Edward FitzGerald (his first version appeared in 1859), these stanzas express ""the desire to snatch the utmost of pleasurable sensation from the irretrievable passing moment… [but also] more sober thoughts of the Power that has created beauty and in man a capacity to appreciate beauty but has cursed him with transience… In words and cadences of haunting loveliness a desolating message was communicated to numberless hearts"" (Baugh, et al., 1417-18). Illustrator Stephen Gooden ""began engraving in 1923 at a time when burin work was less regarded than etching, and soon proved that line-engraving, based on the technique of the great 17th- and 18th-century craftsmen, was still capable of exquisite refinement and expressiveness. He made a series of illustrations in line-engraving, chiefly for the Nonesuch Press, but he also illustrated books for Heinemann and Harrap. His work may be seen at the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford"" (DNB). Fine condition.

Description
Three-Quarter Leather. Collectible; Very Good. Beautiful collection of botanical engravings, circa 1880s. 47 detailed renderings of plant life at the US-Mexican border. Handsomely rebound in 3/4 leather over bevelled boards. 5 raised bands, gilt-bordered and gilt-decorated compartments along the spine. Quarto, lavish marbled endpapers, all edges bright gilt. 37 of the plates profile plant life of the "Cactacaea" genus and are magnificently illustrated by P. Roetter and W.H. Dougal. The other 10 comprise miscellaneous genera and illustrators. With no printing or copyright information to go by, it's difficult to know exactly what we have here but it is possible that these were the best plates from an early Government Printing Office (GPO) publication collected and then rebound into this one volume. The net result, regardless, is very impressive indeed.

Clean and VG+ in its printed beige wrappers, with light chipping to the front panel's lower tip and very light wear along the spine crown. Octavo, 95 pgs. Includes the architectural rendering of a Chinatown tenement but lacks the colored fold-out map of Chinatown as called for (Cowen, pg. 204). Also includes a compendium of testimony and reports concerning the conditions of Chinatown tenements, businesses, gambling houses, brothels and opium dens. The committee claims to have visited every room in Chinatown; a list of gambling houses even enumerates their escape routes. Oftern colorful, overwrought descriptions paint a sordid picture of depravity and illness. Underground organizations are said to pay for murder, posting Chinese-language broadsides offering rewards to killers. Concluding recommendations include the demand to force Chinese immigrants to live at the same standard of living as white laborers, undercutting the "corrosive" effects of their presence. Materials of interest to the modern researcher include detailed listings of manufacturers in Chinatown, with specific addresses.

Quarto, three pages of a four page bi-folium, written neatly in ink on a pictorial letter-sheet, depicting the View from Near the Ferry House, U. S. Our knowledge both of Czech and consequently its orthography are non-existent, the identity of the writer could probably be determined by someone without these constraints. The writer has evidently just returned to Europe from America via New York, Havre and thence to Paris. He mentions and presumably describes some of the places he visited in America including Chicago, Michigan, including Huron, Detroit, and St. Clair, Erie, Buffalo, Niagra Falls, et cetera. An interesting and unusual letter recording a Czech traveler's experiences in America.

Description
Liverpool: E. & I. Gregson, 1815. A unique anonymous collection of 69 handwritten puzzles, conundrums, and riddles, some in verse, filling approximately 30 pages of a blank notebook from the early part of the 19th century. The first conundrum references cookbook author Elizabeth Raffald and begins: "Tell me my savory Mrs. Raffald / What completes your choicest dish, / Oft pendant from a kitchen scaffold / 'Tis neither flesh, nor fowl, nor fish..." No answers are provided to the reader, offering an opportunity for intrepid puzzle-solvers to use their wits. Bound in quarter dark green leather and green boards stamped in gilt, all edges gilt. Housed in green leather slipcase ruled in gilt. Very Good, front free endpaper removed. After the 69 riddles, the following 50 or so pages are mostly blank with "Printed on vellum" written in pencil above a circle and rectangle illustration on one page; a rectangular notch is cut out of another. Another page notes in pencil, "Silver pencil finished in Blue black. I am sorry the other trifles in silver pencil are not at present to be found. If this book afford any amusement, I may keep it-- E.B." An unusual handwritten manuscript of brain-teasers from the early part of the 19th century, when entertainment was often quite challenging compared to today.

Description
New York: American Anti-Slacery Society, 1837. Hardcover. Very Good. Bound volume containing the first 8 quarterly issues published [which is all that was published under this title]. Old 1/4 leather, recently and neatly rebacked. The original front and back covers are heavily rubbed with loss of some of the original paper covering. Contents sound with mostly minimal foxing. "Georgia A. S. Society" written in ink a couple of times of front endpaper. A list of six names (A. Bliss, Jr., J. B. Sylvester, Hiram B. Ballard and three others which we were less able to decipher) is written inside the back cover. We know nothing about any Georgia Anti-Slavery Society. Membership is such an organization in the State of Georgia would have been extremely risky if not suicidal. Nonetheless, we were intrigued.

Description
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1932. Reprint. Hardcover. [a lovely copy with no significant wear, would be Fine but for a couple of very slightly scrunched lower page corners and a one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and brief comment on front endpaper, just below which is a rubber-stamped name of a previous owner; the jacket is bright and attractive, showing very slight edgewear and a little ink-smudging on the front flap]. The second book in this tetralogy of mystery novels set in New York, featuring Drury Lane, "famous actor and criminal investigator, who, after retiring from the stage, lived in medieval splendor in his 'ancient' caste on the Hudson, and worked out his own theories of crime detection." This one concerns the Hatter family -- the "mad Hatters" -- whose "home on Washington Square came to be as famous in New York as the Wendell house or the home of Hetty Green. Then suddenly, just as the Hatter legends began to abate, there started a series of sinister attempts on the lives of members of the doomed family and concurrent publicity that spattered their names across the front pages of every newspaper." Enter Drury Lane, to solve the case. Although it wasn't yet publicly known that "Barnaby Ross" and "Ellery Queen" were one and the same author (two cousins from Brooklyn), attentive readers would have picked up on the fact that "Ross" employed the same "Challenge to the Reader" narrative device as "Queen" used in his early novels, that of presenting readers with all the known facts necessary for them to solve the mysteries themselves in advance of the book's protagonist. Reportedly, Dannay and Lee had some fun with their dual-dual pseudonyms at the time these books came out, appearing in a series of public debates in which Dannay impersonated "Ross" and Lee portrayed "Queen," both wearing masks to preserve their anonymity. (Although I've not seen it stated anywhere, it's possible that the character of Drury Lane and his "castle" may have been inspired by the actor William Gillette (1853-1937), famous for his stage portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, who constructed and lived in his retirement just such a dwelling, located on the Connecticut River.) Some years later, after the "Ross"/"Queen" masquerade was revealed, the four books in this group were reprinted under Queen's name; jacketed copies of the original "Ross" versions (even the G&D reprints) are exceedingly scarce. (The publisher of the first editions was the Viking Press, perhaps a calculated choice to further distance "Ross" from "Queen," who was published at that time by the Frederick A. Stokes Company.) NOTE that although I've dated this book as 1932 (the date that appears on the title page), that seems to have been a carry-over from the original Viking edition; this particular printing likely dates from the mid-1930s. .
