Description
[Paris: 1717] small quarto, 11, [1] pp., some very slight ruffling to bottom edge, otherwise a fine copy. This is the most important decree concerning French trade with her colonies, on which all subsequent regulations were based. This decree remained in force for a considerable time, suffering periodic amendments, to suit varying economic and political changes. Article I appoints the following ports as trading centers with America: Calais, Dieppe, Le Havre, Roüen, Honfleur, St. Malo, Morlaix, Brest, Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Bayonne and Cette. Article II declares that "Toutes les denrées & marchandaises, soit du crû ou de la fabrique du Royaume, mesme la vaisselle d'argent, ou autres ouvrages d'Orfeverie; les vins & eaux-de-vie de Guyenne, ou autres Provinces destinez pour etre transportez aux Isles & Colonies Françoises, seront exempts de tous droits de sortie & d'entrée, …" and the same applies according to the next article, to the ships' munitions and provisions. By article X goods coming from abroad to be shipped to the French colonies pay the "droits d'entrée" into France but are exempt from the "droits de sortie," except in the case of foreign salt beef, which is exempt from both. As regards goods coming from America and destined for foreign countries, these also pay no dues, on condition that the necessary declarations are made and that the goods awaiting the conclusion of such sales are warehoused in any of the ports mentioned above, except St. Malo, Morlaix, Brest and Nantes. Five classes of goods may be imported for sale abroad at these four harbours as well, namely "sucres terrez ou cassonades, indigo, gingemvre, rocou & cacao provenant des Isle & Colonies Françoises," to be transported by land along certain specifically defined routes. The following are the Customs duties levied on imports from the Colonies for consumption in France: "Les Moscovades ou Sucres bruts, le cent pésant, Deux livres dix sols… All goods from the Colonies had to pass through France, or at least a French port, and heavy penalties were imposed in cases where goods were shipped direct from the Colonies even to some neighboring foreign land, nor were ships destined for the Colonies allowed to load wine or other goods in any foreign country, not even in Madeira. This decree contains a number of other purely administrative regulations connected with French colonial trade. By a later decree these regulations were made to apply also to Canada. Unrecorded variant issue of Wroth and Annan 592. See Maggs, French Colonisation of America, 94 for their description of another variant issue. (£25 in 1936).

Description
quarto, 1 page, in very good clean condition. No recipient named, but likely sent to Frank Wilson, an upstate New York Assemblyman, urging him to reject repeal of the so-called "Lusk Laws" – remnants of the first American "Red Scare" that followed World War I. In 1919, the Lusk Committee of the New York Legislature – formally the "Joint Legislative Committee to Investigate Seditious Activities" – began investigating Revolutionary Radicalism by raiding New York offices maintained by the Russian Bolshevik Government, determined to show that the I.W.W. and other American left wingers were inspired to promote "seditious" violence against the US government by Soviet Russian agents. This dovetailed with the Palmer Raids of 1919 and 1920, conducted by Attorney General Mitchell Palmer's Justice Department which arrested radicals and anarchists, 500 of whom, being foreign citizens, were deported from the U.S. As further follow-up, in 1921, the New York Legislature passed laws to insure that the public would be educated about the dangers of the Communist and Radical Menace. But the hysteria had faded by the time Democrat Al Smith was elected Governor of New York in 1922. He supported Democrats in the Legislature who proposed repeal of the "Lusk Laws". These included the requirement that public school teachers and even private schools supported by religious denominations swear loyalty "to our form of government" and not advocate its overthrow by force or violence. The Allied Patriotic Societies, supposedly representing 53 "patriotic organizations", opposed the repeal because of the "continued existence of revolutionary and seditious propaganda." Braman, who headed the group, was a Boston and New York banker with extensive Western investments, a confidant of the late President McKinley who had given his yacht to the US Government for military purposes during the Spanish-American War and allowed his 800 acre Maine estate to be used as a hospital for wounded soldiers. Braman's efforts were in vain. With the active support of Governor Smith, the Lusk laws were repealed.

Venetiis: In Aedibvs Aldi, et Andreae Asvlani Soceri, 1522. First Aldine Edition. 171 x 102 mm. (6 3/4 x 4"). 12 p.l., 282, [1] leaves.Edited by Franciscus Asulanus. Contemporary brown calf, covers with double gilt rule border, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with central fleuron, gilt titling. Aldine anchor device on title and final leaf. Renouard 96:8; Schweiger II, 17; STC Italian, p. 59; Brunet I, 523. ◆Covers with a dozen small areas of abrasion or lost patina from insect activity, tiny wormhole to rear joint, corners and edges just a bit rubbed, but the binding quite solid and not without appeal. Tiny wormhole to upper outer corner of most leaves (not affecting text), but AN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE COPY INTERNALLY, the text unusually bright as well as entirely smooth, clean, and fresh. This collection of commentaries on various Ciceronian orations is the best-known work of the first century writer Asconius, the most important ancient commentator on Cicero. These commentaries were discovered by Poggio Bracciolini, a Florentine delegate to the council of Constance, in the monastery of St. Gall in 1416. The manuscript had numerous gaps and illegible portions, apparently the result of the wretched conditions under which it was stored. Smith says, "Indeed the account given of the place where the monks had deposited their literary treasures is sufficient to account fully for such imperfections, for it is represented to have been 'a most foul and dark dungeon at the bottom of a tower, into which not even criminals convicted of capital offences would have been thrust down.'" The work was first printed in 1477 in Venice and was issued twice more (in Florence in 1519 and Paris in 1520) before this Aldine imprint. In the words of Harry George Fletcher III in his "New Aldine Studies," our editor Franciscus Asulanus (Italian name: Gian Francesco Torresani, of Asola) "was largely responsible for the regular operation of the Press after Aldus' death" in 1515 until at least mid-century; "he sought, as part of this, to do much of the editing himself, with predictable results for one without Aldus' skills in scholarship and in choosing editors." Franciscus found himself in his position because he was the brother-in-law of Aldus, who in 1505 had married Franciscus' sister Maria. This union not only brought together the Aldus and Torresano families, but also united two great printing firms, since Franciscus' father, Andrea, had purchased the press of Nicholas Jenson, surely the greatest name in 15th century Italian printing. After 1505, the names of Aldus and Torresano appeared, as here, on Aldine title pages, and after 1515, Andrea, Franciscus, and another brother, Federico, conducted the firm's business while Aldus' offspring were still young. The three earlier editions of Asconius are all quite rare. The present copy is unusually fresh and bright, with no signs of actual use..

Description
Florence: Magheri, 1816. FIRST EDITION. 8 folding etched plates. Original printed wrappers, spine reinforced. Bookplate and stamp of collector Marcel Bekus, old catalog entry pasted inside front panel. Light foxing, otherwise a good copy. First edition of the earliest Italian book on steam engines. The text recounts the history of steam power and its early adopters, then details the progress of the technology and its applications in navigation and commerce. The author emphasizes the importance of steam travel in Italy’s vast network of waterways for efficient trade routes. He also decries his country’s slow adoption of steam technology and comments on its successful implementation in the rest of Europe and America. The plates illustrate the mechanism of steam engines and two early steamships. Luigi Serristori (1793-1857) was an Italian economist and mathematician. A Napoleonic sympathizer, he moved to Russia after the fall of the empire and served in the Tsarist army, but later returned to Italy and became an administrator in the court of Leopold II of Tuscany. Description
Paris, 1868. FIRST EDITION. 6 folding tables, typographic tables in the text. Original yellow printed wrappers. An excellent copy in original condition. First edition of this economic and chemical analysis of tobacco based on years of growing and marketing experience. The text is divided into two parts. The first describes twelve types of tobacco and how to make their leaves into cigarettes. The author breaks down how each species burns, what chemical additives should be included, and proper materials for rolling. The second part provides information on maximizing profits from tobacco cultivation, including land usage, the ideal number of leaves per plant, how many cigarettes a plant should render, and nicotine concentrations. Schloesing (1824-1919) was a French soil chemist and director for l’École d’application des manufactures de l’État. Along with colleague Achille Muntz, Schloesing proved that nitrification is a biological process in soil.

Description
13 black & white illus. 77 pp. Small 8vo (175 x 126 mm.), orig. pictorial wrappers (vertical crease to upper wrapper), staple-bound. [Philadelphia: 1973]. The landmark exhibition catalogue for a pioneering show of artists' books; the show was held at both Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, and the University Art Museum, Berkeley. Vanderlip, later a museum curator at the Denver Art Museum, writes in the Foreword: "This exhibition attempts to survey the many different types of books made by artists from 1960 to the present. For the purpose of this Exhibition the definition of 'book' is very flexible. If the artist conceived his work as a book, I have generally accepted his position." This is followed by the essays "Slices of Silence, Parcels of Time: The Book as a Portable Sculpture" by artist Lynn Lester Hershman (b. 1941) and "Some Thoughts on Books as Art" by the poet and critic John Perreault (1937-2015). The exhibition presented the works of Ader, Baldessari, the Bechers, A.A. Bronson, Byars, Cage, Dibbets, Downsbrough, Feldmann, Filliou, Marcia Hafif, Higgins, Hockney, Lydia Hunn, Ray Johnson, Lynda S. Kahn, Alison, Knowles, Lamelas, Ellen Lanyon, LeWitt, Cynthia Marsh, Merz, Nauman, Oldenburg, Tom Phillips, Brigid Polk, Rot, Ruscha, Saroyan, Siegelaub, Walasse Ting, Emmett Williams, etc., etc. Lenders to the exhibition included Leo Castelli Gallery, Claes Oldenburg, Lucy Lippard, Martha Jackson Gallery, Something Else Press, Sonnabend Gallery, Wittenborn & Co., etc. Thirteen books are depicted with full-page illustrations. "Artists Books is the neat catalogue of an exhibition organized at Moore College by Dianne Perry Vanderlip. On the front cover there is a photo of another similar booklet, but the actual title of the catalogue only appears on the photographed catalogue - so what is one holding? ...[There is] a detailed alphabetical list of nearly 250 books (and a few magazines). A comparison of this list with [Celant and Morris's] suggests an overlap of less than a quarter, an indication of the diversity of material now available. John Perreault's 'thoughts' include the best attempt yet to evince characteristics and suggest a definition of book art."-C. Phillpot, "Feedback, 1973" in Booktrek (2018), p. 32. In near fine condition, crease to the upper wrapper, internally pristine. This copy lacks the addenda leaf. Bookseller label of Wittenborn Art Books (1018 Madison Avenue) to inside of lower wrapper. || See also S. Klima, Artists Books: A Critical Survey of the Literature (1998), pp. 12-20. A. Description
10 Ise Katagami Paper Stencils [型紙]. [Japan]. [Taisho Period]. Set of 10 intricate katagami 型紙 paper stencils that vary in size. 2 large stencils are approx. 41.5 x 41.5cm, 4 medium size stencils are approx. 30 x 40.5cm and 4 small stencils are approx. 15.5 x 22cm. All are in a shade of brown and are Japanese katagami paper stencils in an abstract, floral or botanical design. The stencils are made from layers of washi 和紙 (traditional Japanese handmade paper) and glue (called kakishibu 柿渋) that is extracted from persimmons, which give the stencils their signature brown hue. Katagami is also known as Ise katagami 伊勢型紙, named after the area of Ise (now Mie Prefecture) where they were made and used. Some of them have a very fine lattice made of human hair or the equivalent, that hold the designs together. Stencils were traditionally used on silk or cotton cloth to decorate hand towels, obi or clothing or on paper or objects, such as fans. The main ingredients in the glue are glutinous rice, rice bran and water. Sources attribute the roots of katazome to as early as the late Nara Period (710-794), but certainly by the Kamakura period (1185-1333) it was being used to dye textiles for clothing. It later became an artistic medium in its own right in the Edo (1603-1868) and Meiji periods (1868-1912). One of the stencils was previously used and, interestingly, has metallic silver and gold paint on one side. A few stencils have a round whitish mark at the edge on the back or front of the stencil. A few small cuts and a few tiny missing pieces to the stencils, one has a section of broken screen, making it easier to see how it was constructed.Stencils are otherwise in very good condition. An intricate and fragile art form that has all but disappeared in Japan.

San Francisco: Taber Photo. Photograph. Very Good. Photograph [4 7/8 x 7 7/8"] on a gray mount [12 1/2 x 18 3/4"]. Tiny loss to the top fore-edge corner of the mount. Two short closed tears with a 1 1/2" crease between them to the top edge. I. W. Taber (1830-1912) opened his gallery on San Francisco's Montgomery Street in 1871. His business was well known for portraiture and and a plethora of California and Western views- quite a few of which were the unacknowledged works of other photographers. Taber enjoyed success outside of California as well. He was sent to London in 1897 to photograph the pageant of the Queen Victoria Jubilee. Tragically, Taber's career came to a halt when he lost his gallery and negative collection in 1906 due to the San Francisco earthquake and fire. (Information from Online Archive of California).

Description
New York: Orbit, 2021. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Fine. 6x1x9. Reprint. Brand new from publisher. An exceptional copy. 2021 Trade Paperback. 535 pp. Peace is just another kind of battlefield... Savine dan Glokta, once Adua's most powerful investor, finds her judgement, fortune and reputation in tatters. But she still has all her ambitions, and no scruple will be permitted to stand in her way. For heroes like Leo dan Brock and Stour Nightfall, only happy with swords drawn, peace is an ordeal to end as soon as possible. But grievances must be nursed, power seized, and allies gathered first, while Rikke must master the power of the Long Eye . . . before it kills her. Unrest worms into every layer of society. The Breakers still lurk in the shadows, plotting to free the common man from his shackles, while noblemen bicker for their own advantage. Orso struggles to find a safe path through the maze of knives that is politics, only for his enemies, and his debts, to multiply. The old ways are swept aside, and the old leaders with them, but those who would seize the reins of power will find no alliance, no friendship, and no peace lasts forever.
