Description
Avignon: Chambeau, 1748. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary mottled calf (worming to rear board, extremities worn), spine and label gilt, edges sprinkled red. Reinaud bookplate on the front pastedown. In very good condition. First edition of this epicurean exposition of human virtues and aesthetics. Divided into three volumes, the text examines genius, poetry, happiness, chance, nobility, pleasure, tragedy, drama, memory, imagination, taste, and beauty. The author classifies these characteristics into personality types and occasionally mentions historical figures that fall into their categories. He also comments on the prevalence of virtues in geographical regions, of which France, naturally, produces the most agreeable humans. Caillet 3804; Barbier, Anonymes III: 1105.

Chikuson was a student of Tanomura Chokunyū 田能村直入 (1814-1907) who himself was a student of Chikuden. Chokunyū was a master of the Nanga 南画 school of painting, also known as Bunjinga 文人画, which focused primarily on Chinese landscapes. Boards show wear; very slight worming of some pages. Description
Lee and Shepard, 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Full blue cloth with black & gilt lettering and decoration, blue clay-coated endpapers, illustrated with engravings throughout. Covers are clean & bright, top of spine is a little worn, one page gathering proud. Overall, an attractive copy. A fantastic concept: a bunch of 49ers who now live in New England decide (40 years later) to take a trip back to California. The trip would take over a month, and the book is a combination travelogue of these kind of rowdy guys, along with reminiscences of the Gold Rush days, including some documents of the time. Deserves to be in any collection of Californiana & Gold Rush history.

Tickell excoriates "the most infamous, slavish, base, sordid, venal, mean, inconsistent, despicable parliament, that ever existed;" as well as "that administration which has robbed us of thirteen colonies, and plunged us in a shameful and calamitous war with the whole world." As Adams notes, the work "contains a number of references to the war in America," and criticism of British policies. Adams, American Controversy 80-83b. Sabin 95794.
