Description
1860. First Edition. (BROWN, John) REDPATH, James. Echoes of Harper's Ferry. Boston: Thayer and Eldridge, 1860. Octavo, original brown cloth recased, original pale yellow endpapers retained. $2800.First edition of one of the very first books on John Brown's Raid, edited and authored by controversial journalist James Redpath, with major writings by Emerson and Thoreau, abolitionists Theodore Parker, Wendell Phillips, George Cheever and others, along with extensive Brown correspondence, together in book form for the first time, in original cloth.Redpath, who emigrated from Scotland, early worked as a reporter for Greeley's New York Tribune. Traveling through the South in the mid-1850s, he became an outspoken abolitionist who also reported for Garrison's Liberator, as well as Missouri and Chicago newspapers. He was ""dedicated to helping Brown."" After the raid and Brown's capture, Redpath also ""became involved in an abortive plot to rescue him from the Charles Town, Virginia jail."" In 1860, following Brown's execution, he published Echoes of Harper's Ferry and Public Life of John Brown. His journalism and close involvement in the events also offer a rare glimpse into ""the intricacies of 19th-century American reform movements, the evolution of the press"" and the ""volatile relationship between politics and the press"" (Boyd, James Redpath, 35-37). In his preface Redpath notes the research that generated Echoes, which contains Brown's wide-ranging prison correspondence, writings by Emerson and Thoreau, and by major abolitionists such as Theodore Parker, Lydia Maria Child and Garrison, along with George Cheever's account of Brown's trial and execution, which notes: ""the death of John Brown is the beginning of the end."" The book's Appendix, as well, contains Redpath's extensive reportage. First edition, first printing frontipiece of Brown with printed signature in facsimile, individual essays with printed signatures in facsimile, rear leaf of publisher's advertisement. Sabin 68524. Howes R119. Work, 350. Owner signatures. Tiny bit of marginalia to Contents.Interior generally fresh with inner paper hinges expertly reinforced, expert restoration to original cloth. A very good copy, especially scarce.

Description
1938. Signed. HOOVER, J. Edgar. Two typed letters signed. Washington, June 18 and July 2, 1938. Two sheets of FBI/DOJ letterhead, each measuring approximately 7 by 9-1/2 inches. $2200.Two typed signed letters written by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover on FBI letterhead, the first in response to a request by a young man named Clarence Schudel for an autographed copy of an FBI personnel manual and the second responding to Schudel's ""thank you"" note and enclosing more booklets and pamphlets about crime-fighting as well as the name of a prominent journalist contact at a magazine capable of offering further assistance, accompanied by one of the original enclosures (unsigned), a manual on FBI training schools and personnel selection. This collection of material stems from the correspondence between J. Edgar Hoover and a young admirer, Clarence Schudel of Defiance, Ohio. The first letter, dated June 18, 1938, reads: ""Dear Mr. Schudel: Your communication postmarked June 12, 1938, has been received in which you have requested a copy of the Bureau booklet 'The Selection and Training of Personnel.' I was very much pleased to know that you are interested in the Buckeye Boys' State Program in Ohio and that you enjoyed Mr. Clegg's address last year. Your continued interest in the work of the FBI is sincerely appreciated, and I am glad to comply with you request in enclosing an autographed copy of 'The Selection and Training of Personnel' together with several other pamphlets and copies of my addresses which I thought you would find interesting. Sincerely yours, [signed] J. Edgar Hoover."" An unsigned copy of the mentioned booklet is included here. The second letter, dated July 2, 1938, reads: ""Dear Mr. Schudel: It was thoughtful of you to write to me to express your appreciation for the booklets which I recently forwarded to you, as indicated in your communication postmarked June 22, 1938. I have noted your desire to obtain a copy of the bulletin, 'Uniform Crime Reports,' which I am glad to enclose. There is also enclosed a copy of a pamphlet entitled 'How to Fight Crime,' published by Mrs. William Brown Meloney, Editor of 'This Week' Magazine, which I am sure will offer you a number of suggestions concerning crime prevention work. Additional copies of this booklet may be obtained by communicating directly with Mrs. Meloney at 420 Lexington Avenue, New York City. Sincerely yours, [Signed] J. Edgar Hoover."" At the time of these letters, Schudel had likely just graduated high school and may have been in the process of planning to enter some form of government service. Hoover refers to the Buckeye Boys State, a week-long program run by the American Legion intended to foster democratic ideals and foster leadership in high school students. Evidently, Hoover's Assistant Director, Hugh Clegg, appeared to speak at the program. Schudel's plans to join the FBI or a similar organization appear not to have been realized as he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January 1941, just shy of a year before Pearl Harbor. He survived the war and moved to Wichita, where he evidently wrote a book concerning Communism. Whether he ever contacted Marie Meloney is unclear, but the connection through Hoover would have been invaluable to an aspiring journalist. Meloney, a close friend and confidante of Eleanor Roosevelt, was widely recognized as one of the leading American journalists of her time. She was responsible for securing four interviews with Mussolini, breaking the scoop of Admiral Dewey's wedding, and interviewing Marie Curie before deciding to lead a campaign to buy radium for her research. Clearly, Schudel's respectful regard for Hoover inspired the man to uncommon generosity. Light foxing and original creases to both signed letters. A bit of soiling and staining mainly to wrappers of booklet. A most desirable archive.

Description
[16]+555 pages. Octavo (8" x 6") bound in full leather with raised bands with red labels and gilt lettering to spine. (Palau 32887) First edition.Antonio Maria Bonucci was a Jusuit priest and Antonio Vieira's secretary for the last ten years of his life. Since Bonucci was Vieira's secretary until his, Vieira's, death in 1697 and was well aware of the content of Vieira's work, it is surprising that he wrote and managed to get a book published in 1706 in which eh seemingly follows some of Vieira's ideas regarding the succession of time. When one reads the first "book" of this work, they have the impression that the content and structure are very much similar to some passages of Vieira's Clavis Prophetarum. A study of this book will provide further light on Vieira's interpretation of the succession of empires, particularly when analyzing his chapter on "how the time of the Antichrist should be understood in the Fifth empire, while Christ's empire would thus be counted as the sixth. Antonio Vieira was a Portuguese Jesuit philosopher and writer, the "prince" of Catholic pulpit-orators of his time. He accompanied his parents to the colony of Brazil, where his father had been posted as a registrar. He received his education at the Jesuit college at Bahia. In 1635 he entered the priesthood. He distinguished himself as an orator. He was one of the reformers during the inquisition and his enemies had him exiled to Coimbra. this work is a kind of universal history, one of its interest is that the dedication was written in Bahia.Condition:Recased with renewed spine and labels and end papers, corners rubbed, leather boards, scuffed and rubbed, early signature to title, minor dampstaining else a very good copy.

Description
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1874. FIRST EDITION. Blue publisher’s cloth, author and title in gilt on front cover; some rubbing on cloth boards, hinges starting but otherwise a very good copy from the library of Chichester Fortescue, Baron Carlingford, with his bookplate and ownership signature dated 1874. First edition. The eminent physicist Tyndall lambasted religion in this inflammatory address, given at the 1874 annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. In vivid descriptive language, he argues that theology has impeded scientific progress and must entirely submit to science on matters of truth and the cosmos. The Belfast Address was widely criticized by the Church, the scientific community, and the press—all of whom Tyndall addresses in the preface. The Address tarnished his reputation, exemplified by his depiction in numerous contemporary publications. For example, William Hurrell Mallock unfavorably satirized Tyndall in his novel The new republic (1877), where Tyndall appears as a long-winded and naïve atheist. The present copy was owned by Chichester Samuel Parkinson-Fortescue (1823-98), Baron Carlingford and 2nd Baron Clermont, Chief Secretary of Ireland (1865-66, 1868-71). One of the most prominent Irish members of the Liberal party, he was a formative part of Gladstone’s ministry. This edition was published the same year that Fortescue was elected to the peerage as Baron Carlingford. Tyndall (1820-93) was an Irish physicist and philosopher. In the early stages of his career, he worked on diamagnetism and the movement of glaciers. This work influenced him to focus on climate science and thermodynamics in the later half of his life. He published important works on heat and solar radiation, atmospheric light and particle interactions, and the color of the sky. He served as the superintendent of the Royal Institution from 1867 to 1885. Not content to leave his work in the laboratory or the academy, Tyndall was an outspoken, sometimes controversial, public intellectual. Tyndall: DNB, XIX, pp. 1358-1363; Fortescue: DNB, XXII, pp. 652-654.

Sante Fe: Cinnabar Moth, 2021. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 5x0x8. An exceptional copy. 2021 Trade Paperback. Tuesday and Zed Furst are perfectly normal children with perfectly strange parents. Their father won't discuss his job, their mother never leaves the house without her guard dog, and the topic of the family tree is off limits. When a last minute "business trip" gets the adults out of the way, Zed and Tuesday decide to get to the bottom of things once and for all. Too bad some thugs with shape-shifting weapons have other ideas. Their escape leaves them trapped in the modern-meets-medieval Falinnheim, where everyone insists their father is a disgraced fugitive. They hope whoever is leaving them coded clues may have some answers, but they're not sure they're going to like what they learn.

London: The Folio Society, 2011. Hardcover. Very good. Hardcover. 9 1/2" X 6 1/2". xviiii, 283pp. Bound in black rear cloth over board with front cover bound in pictorial paper. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of boards. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is square and sound. Slipcase is clean and undamaged. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The Black Sea is at once homage to an ocean and its shores, and an amazingly readable meditation on Eurasian history from the earliest times to the present, evoking the culture, history and politics of the volatile region surrounding the Black Sea. Ascherson recalls the world of Herodotus and Aeschylus; Ovid’s place of exile; the decline and fall of Byzantium; the Christian Goths; the Tatar Khanates; the growth of Russian power and the centuries of war between Ottoman and Russian empires. And, in our own century, the terrors of Stalinism and its fascist enemy, striving for control of these colourful and complex shores. In this story of Greeks, Scythians, Samatians, Huns, Goths, Turks, Russians and Poles, we come to know and understand the sea where Europe ended and “barbarism” was born.(Publisher).

New York: The Macaulay Company. Good. (c.1933). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [front hinge cracked, modest wear to the extremities, some light staining on the bottom of the text block, and a small dampstain surrounding the base of the spine; basically a reading/reference copy only]. A first-person account of the trials and tribulations of an unwed mother -- or, more precisely, a divorcee who gets knocked up by her lover, then refuses his half-hearted marriage proposal, and subsequently suffers "pain, hunger, want." The publisher's blurb (preceding the title page) lays it on thick, in the best Macaulay house style, extolling motherhood as "the supreme human experience -- nothing more heroic, nothing more harrowing and nothing more rewarding," and then goes on: "Yet, until this remarkable book, the story of a woman's pregnancy in all its dramatic course, with all its climactic psychological development, and its powerful effects on all the other human beings involved, has never been told." But wait, there's more! "Breathlessly you will follow the story of this courageous woman to whom maternity came unsought, and in terror, who faced the world's scorn to bear a fatherless child, who endured the nine months of concealment, masked suffering and pain to emerge into a new human worth and to win a glorious new love consecrated by suffering." And talk about purple prose! -- here's the moment our heroine figures out she's with child, after a couple of months of feeling like crap: "I am puzzled. Then the Moon, Ruler of Woman, forgets to touch me with her carmined scepter. Suddenly I know! I AM PREGNANT!" (I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that the "Anonymous" narrator was the prolific Jack Woodford.) .
