Description
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1914. First edition. Fine. Attractively bound in half brown morocco over marbled paper boards. Quarto. 206 pp. With twenty-five beautiful color plates (including frontispiece) from illustrations by Kay Nielsen. Small chip to paper on upper board and slight toning to endpapers. Still a bright, Fine copy of Kay Nielsen's best work and one of the most desirable books from the Golden Age of Illustration. "By general consent, Nielsen's most spectacular and celebrated book is East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Old Tales from the North, translated from the Norwegian of Peter C. Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe (devoted collectors of Scandinavian folk lore in the mid-nineteenth century). First published in 1914, this beautiful volume has been reprinted many times up to the present day... Nielsen's unique style and talent for combining the eerie and fantastic with beautiful decorative effect was at its peak with this set of illustrations" (Dalby, The Golden Age of Children's Book Illustration, p. 90) East of the Sun and West of the Moon was Nielsen's second illustrated book, preceded by In Powder and Crinoline in 1913. Nielsen was the son of the director of the Royal Danish Theater and, after World War I, himself became principal designer for the Danish State Theater. His theater background led to years of artistic involvement in the Walt Disney Company, where his art was used in Fantasia. He also provided concept art for iconic films like Sleeping Beauty (1959) and The Little Mermaid (1989), which was not released until decades after his death; and he was credited as inspiring the visual development of Disney films as recent as Frozen (2013). Grolier Children's 100, 66. Fine.

Description
San Jose, Cal: The Pacific Tree and Vine Co, 1894. First edition. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy. 498 pp., complete with four plates (including frontispiece). Publisher's mustard yellow cloth. A bit of fading to spine and darkening to edge of upper board. Some toning to endpapers at gutter. Shallow nick to edge of front endpaper and to edge of preliminary blank. An excellent, clean and fresh copy. William Lewis Manly's Death Valley in '49 is a "classic account, by a survivor, of dire sufferings endured by an emigrant party on a short-cut from Salt Lake to California through the Valley called ever after by this fearful name" (Howes M-255). Manly was a guide for the Death Valley '49ers, a group of Gold Rush pioneers attempting to make the overland trip from Utah to California. Ater the party got lost in the area that would later become known as Death Valley, Manly and John Haney Rogers embarked on a perilous three-hundred-mile journey on foot to secure relief and supplies for their party, who waited in Death Valley for their return for twenty-six days. Manly and Rogers eventually rescued the party and led them to safety in California. The book is now considered a crucial entry in the bibliography of California history and a landmark work on the Death Valley region: "No other book that has ever been written about Death Valley can even remotely approach the Manly in historic importance. It is unlikely that one ever will" (Graff 2670). Near Fine.

Description
Paris: Éditions Réverberes, 1938. Octavo (21 ×13.5 cm). Original printed wrappers; unpaginated (33 pp.) including a frontispiece after a drawing by Jean Marembert. Overall very good condition. Limited edition of 300 copies. Rare volume of poems published by the neo-Dadaist group Les Réverbères, which was founded in December 1937 by Michel Tapié, Jean Marembert, Jacques Office, Pierre Minne, and Henri Bernard, and which promoted Dadaist exhibitions, jazz concerts, stage performances, and published literary works. Among the exhibitors were: Louis Cattiaux, Marembert, Pierre Minne, Tapié, as well as members of the "La Main à plume" surrealist group: Noël Arnaud, Marc Patin, Jean-François Chabrun, and others. Among other events, the group also organized "Tribute to Dada" soirées, which featured readings of texts by Tristan Tzara, Ribemont-Dessaignes, and others. In "Art of the Defeat: France 1940-1944," Laurence Bertrand Dorléac asserts that the group still met for several gatherings retaining the spirit of the 1930s even after the German occupation of France in June 1940. The Neo-Dadaist activities around Michel Tapié have not been explored to any significant degree and are rarely mentioned in passing in the literature on Dada and Surrealism. One exception is Michel Fauré's book "Histoire du surréalisme sous l'Occupation", published in 1982. The reason for the sparse state of research is probably that the experimental, elaborate avant-garde prints, most of which were produced in very small editions, are hardly accessible due to their rarity. Very scarce; as of December 2023, OCLC lists only 2 copies in North America.

Paris: Mme. Huzard, 1837. 5 engraved plates. Original printed blue wrappers. Presentation inscription on the title from the author to M. Lafayette de Beaurepaire. Some light foxing, but otherwise in excellent, original condition. Only French edition, a guidebook to pheasant farming after Bohemian traditions. Originally published in German, this edition was expanded to include information about raising pheasants in France. According to the translator in his avis, the Germans had cultivated the best pheasant farms in the world, so the French should employ their methods. The text covers the building of coops, arrangement for mating, feeding, different varieties of pheasants and their particular needs, costs and revenue to expect, troubleshooting problems, and veterinary care. The illustrations show how to plot land for a farm and a properly built coop. One physical copy in the U.S. (Berkeley). Van Bragt, Bib. des traductions françaises (1810-1840) 5115 ; Quérard VI : 109.

Description
13 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers, title-slip (a little defective), orig. stitching. Tokyo: Suzuki shi sankikuken 鈴木氏餐菊軒, 1935. An edition of the Chinese text of the Kül-Tigin inscription along with related texts. The Kül-Tigin inscription is one of the Khöshöö Tsaidam or Orchon inscriptions, thus named after the location where they were found. These bilingual inscriptions are in ancient Turkic and classical Chinese. The stele with the inscription covered in our book was erected in 732 CE by Bilge qaγan (d. 734) to commemorate his brother Kül-Tigin. The stele was discovered in 1889. In addition to the Chinese text of the stele, our book contains a note (ji 記) by Qing imperial clansman and bibliographer Sheng-yu 盛昱 (1850-1900), one by historian of Mongol rule Ke Shaomin 柯劭忞 (1850-1933), and one by antiquarian [Wang] Yirong [王]懿榮 (1845-1900). There is a colophon by Suzuki Yoshitake. Our book is rare; WorldCat records only one copy in North America. Nice copy.

Description
New York: Ives Washburn, Inc.. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1939). First Edition. Hardcover. [a nice solid copy, light shelfwear to bottom edge and at top of spine, one-time owner's name scrawled at top of ffep; jacket has a couple of tiny chips at top of front panel, a few nicks elsewhere along top and bottom edges, very shallow paper loss at spine ends]. "Written out of deep understanding and with the authority of over 13 years first-hand knowledge of the situation in East Asia, this book by the famous New York Times correspondent is hugely informing and definitely exciting. [The author] knows personally and intimately the leaders of both countries in the Chinese-Japanese conflict and here presents his personal -- and factual -- account of their objectives, their methods and the conditions which now obtain in China as a result of their strategies." Abend (1884-1955) reportedly worked briefly in the film industry (as a title-writer and scenario reader, although I've been unable to uncover any actual credits for him), followed by stints on various newspapers; he went to China in 1926 as the NYT chief correspondent in Peking, and ended up spending the next fifteen years there, despite an effort by the Chinese government to deport him in 1929 when they took exception to some of his columns. He covered the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931, and essentially was on the ground for the Sino-Japanese War for the rest of the decade. In 1937 he was wounded during a Japanese artillery bombardment, and later beaten by Japanese military police; he repaid the favor with his reporting on the "Rape of Nanking," which exposed the extent of Japanese atrocities in that city. After returning to the U.S. in 1941, he embarked on a career as a freelance writer and lecturer; during the 1940s he turned out approximately a book a year, and also wrote extensively for The Saturday Evening Post, Look, Reader's Digest, and other such popular magazines. .

New York/London: Harper & Brothers. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1935. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. [minor shelfwear, some age-toning to edges of text block, light dust-soiling to top edge; the jacket is a bit edgeworn, with small tears and some associated short creasing at the bottom corners of the front panel]. "This is the story of two brothers, Peter and Andy Gale, and their cousin Jack, three young Americans of today. Their grandfather, Anton Galé, came to the United States sixty years before, an immigrant from Carniola, and was killed in a Chicago riot in 1886. Their grandmother was part Indian, part Yankee. The father of Peter and Andy was a small business man and Jack's father was a steel worker. This is their background, but their lives and problems are representative of millions of young Americans today, regardless of racial heritage. They are products of America: America's problem." ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience."
