Each volume individually housed in chemises with red morocco spines over gray paper boards and black paper slipcases with red morocco edges. "Du cote de chez Swann is the first volume of Proust's monumental opus A la recherche du temps perdu, the most important French novel of the twentieth century and a masterpiece of European literature. This first volume described the narrator's childhood and contains the celebrated madeleine episode. Publication of subsequent volumes was interrupted by the war. This novel, famously turned by Gide for the N.R.F, was published at the author's expense by Grasset. By 1918 the N.R.F had realised its huge blunder and published A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, which won the Prix Goncourt and established Proust as a major literature figure" (From Stendhal to Rene Char: Le Cabinet de livres de Renaud Gillet, Sotheby's, 27 October 1999, lot 64). "Translated by Scott Moncreiff as Swann's Way etc., Proust's great novel A la recherche du temps perdu is something that happens once in a hundred years like Les Fleurs du Mal or War and Peace. He combined tragic poetical insight with the gift of creating comic characters in the round, like Shakespeare. He is consistently both intelligent and poetic. Bergsonian philosophy of time gives depth, Ruskinian aesthetics texture. Embittered by his homosexual bias and disabling asthma, he shows some deterioration in the unrevised volumes though not enough to upset this magisterially executed conception of a master-mind in which art erects its monument to dead loves using for material only thought and the passage of time. 'It appeals to our sense of wonder and gains our hommage by its veiled greatness. I don't think there ever has been in the whole of literature such an example of the power of analysis' (Conrad)" (Connolly, The Modern Movement). BN, Proust, 402, 445, 484, 489, 531, 533, and 536. Connolly, The Modern Movement, 23. HBS 68610. $35,000.

29/03/1861. James E. Harrison, though born in Virginia, served the Union cause during the Civil War. He received his first appointment as a Second Lieutenant to the 2d U. S. Cavalry in June 1856, and was stationed in Texas and various forts in the West until December 1858, when he was assigned to scouting Indians. He returned East, and with the Civil War imminent he was promoted to First Lieutenant 2d U.S. Cavalry in March 1861 and then to Captain 5th U.S. Cavalry in May of that year. Harrison was engaged in the Peninsular campaign and commanded a regiment in the Army of the Potomac from September 1862 to June 1863. During that time he served at the battles of Antietem, Chancellorsville, and Brandy Station, among many others. He was Breveted Major U.S. Army for gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Hanover Court House, and Brevet Lieutenant Colonel U.S. Army for gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Antietam. In July of 1864 Harrison was assigned to be Inspector-General of Cavalry in the Department of Arkansas, and was later appointed as Special Inspector of Cavalry in West Mississippi.Document signed, as President, Washington, March 29, 1861, effective retroactively to February 27, 1861, an ornate, vignetted commission, with an eagle, cannons and flags, appointing Harrison to the rank of “First Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Cavalry.” The document is countersigned by Secretary of War Simon Cameron.

Description
7/10/22. “I am so strongly of the opinion that soaring flight is possible only in ascending trends of air that I do not expect any new type of machine to be developed from experiments along this line.”The Wright Brothers breakthrough in inventing the airplane was to realize that if the wing on one side of the aircraft met the oncoming flow of air at a greater angle than the opposite wing, it would generate more lift on that side. In response, that wing would rise, causing the aircraft to bank. If the pilot could manipulate the wings in this way, he could maintain balance and turn the aircraft as well. The brothers had considered using a system of gears and pivoting shafts to angle the wings in opposite directions, but they quickly realized such a system would be too heavy and complex. Then they conceived the elegant concept of twisting, or warping, the wing structure itself to take advantage of air currents, a method they called wing-warping. They were aware of gliders, and used some technology from them, but saw them as limited and no competition for the airplane.Richard R. Blythe was an early aviator whose PR firm promoted Lindbergh's flight. He went on to become the president of the Aeronautic Executives of the United States. He was mainly interested in the commercial possibilities in aviation. Blythe was also a prolific writer on aviation. In 1922 he wrote an article on sky sailing, something along the lines of a sailplane.Typed letter signed, on his letterhead, October 7, 1922, to about another flight invention, ''sky-sailing.'' 'Your letter enclosing a clipping of your article in the New York Tribune on sky sailing is received. I understand there are several projects on foot in America to encourage experiments in soaring flight. I am so strongly of the opinion that soaring flight is possible only in ascending trends of air that I do not expect any new type of machine to be developed from experiments along this line. However, this kind of flight does furnish a very good sport, as well as good training to those who engage in it, and for these reasons is to be encouraged....Orville Wright''. Vestige of old mounting on back with some show through to front. Thus did Orville Wright defend his airplane and its mechanics, and dismiss other flying machines predicated on different principles than the Wright Brothers had discovered that were proven to work.An uncommon letter of Wright about flight and the principles the Wright Brothers used in their great invention.

Description
9/7/28. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, was one of the first aviators to promote commercial air travel, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. She disappeared with navigator Fred Noonan somewhere over the Pacific Ocean in July, 1937 and has been the subject of numerous theories and conspiracies ever since. She was declared dead in 1939.An air mail postcard bordered in red, white and blue diagonals with a 10 cent air mail stamp showing a biplane and a large cachet at the left noting it is from the Boston Chapter of the National Aeronautic Association and commemorates the official welcome given to Amelia Earhart, Wilmer Stultz and Lou Gordon, the “Friendship” fliers, Boston, July 9, 1928, the occasion being Earhart's welcome by her hometown after her famous flight across the Atlantic Ocean. It is postmarked the same date, and signed by Earhart across the cachet.

Enodatio Problematum universis geometris Propositorum [.] Praemissis, horum occasione, Tentamentis Variis ad Solutionem illustris veterum Problematis De Anguli Trisectione. Florence, Gugliantini, 1677. [2] ff, (6), 63 pp., 4 folding engraved plates. With presentation inscription to verso of half-title of first work signed by Viviani. Bound in contemporary calf with spine in six compartments. A wonderfully fresh copy, light toning and foxing to one or two leaves, otherwise excellent. First complete edition (second; first 1674, see below) of this important Galileianum, an assembly of previously unpublished writings by Galileo, together with texts by Torricelli and Viviani himself, inscribed by Viviani to an unknown (scored) receipient. Vincenzo Viviani resided with Galileo at Arectri from October 1639 as his pupil, amanuensis, and assistant, and together with Torricelli, spent the last months of Galileo's life with him recording the master's final meditations on the relationship between mathematics and physics. The first chapter of this work, a dialogue entitled "Quinto Libro degli Elementi d'Euclide... spiegata colla Dottrina del Galileo" was dictated by Galileo to Torricelli in November 1641. (Galileo died January 9, 1642.) Though on his deathbed, it was to be the beginning of still another book continuing the discussion between his three old interlocutors from the Two New Sciences. In this dialogue, printed here and edited from a manuscript given to Viviani by Cardinal De' Medici, Galileo reflects upon two definitions found in Euclid's Elements, "same ratio" and "compound ratio," which were "the two most important keys taken from antiquity in creating Galileo's mathematical physics, so that his exposition of them as the last act of his scientific career reflected his earliest scientific steps at Pisa and Padua. Like the Leaning Tower affair, this dialogue linked his last days with his first; Galileo had come full circle" (Drake, p. 421). As a young man, Galileo was profoundly influenced by the Elements, especially Books Five and Six which contained the Eudoxian theory of proportion. "The importance of the Eudoxian proportion theory to Galileo's science cannot be exaggerated. Until the application of algebra to the general solution of geometrical (as well as arithmetical) problems, not achieved until after Galileo's work was completed, rigorous connection of mathematics with physical events was possible only through some theory of proportionality.... Eudoxian theory establishing proportionality between continuous magnitudes was essential to any great advance over medieval physics" (Drake, p. 4). Viviani "with the rigor and prolixity of the ancients.devoted an appendix to geometric problems, among which was one on the trisection of an angle, solved by the use of the cylindrical spiral or of a cycloid; another was the problem of duplicating the cube, solved by means of conics or of the cubic xy2 =k" (DSB). ..............

London: Hurst and Blackett, Limited, 1899. 190 x 125mm. (7 1/2 x 5"). xii, 128 pp.; 1 p.l. (volume II title page handwritten in ink), 129-312 pp. One volume expanded to two.. Fine crimson crushed morocco by the Guild of Women Binders (stamp-signed in gilt on front pastedown), raised bands, stylized gilt lettering on spines, all edges gilt. With five portraits, as called for, and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 264 PLATES, 31 of these colored, 12 folding, about half of them scenes or views, the rest portraits. Also containing the bookplate of David Garrick (mounted on card at p. 10); an autograph letter, signed, from George Smart; an invoice or accounting signed by Eliza Matthews; and five other autographs mounted on heavy stock. Occasional trivial offsetting from inserted plates, but A VERY FINE COPY, clean and fresh internally, in unworn bindings. Richly extra-illustrated with depictions of the people, places, and events discussed in the text, this joint biography of brothers James and Horace Smith was simply and tastefully bound by members of the Guild of Women Binders. Although James (1775-1839) was a lawyer and Horace (1779-1849) a successful stockbroker, both had literary aspirations and enjoyed being part of theatrical and artistic circles. Their dreams were realized when in 1812 the Drury Lane Theatre offered a £50 prize for an address to be recited on the theater's reopening following repair of fire damage. The Smiths hit on the idea of producing parodies of popular poets, with James imitating Wordsworth, Southey, and Coleridge, while Horace took on Byron, Moore, and Scott. Their humorous publication was an unexpected runaway hit, going to seven editions in three months. According to Britannica, "'Rejected Addresses' are the most widely popular parodies ever published in England, and take classical rank in literature. . . . A striking feature is the absence of malice; none of the poets caricatured took offence, while the imitation is so clever that both Byron and Scott are recorded to have said that they could hardly believe they had not written the addresses ascribed to them." In addition to being witty, both men were kind and generous friends, often helping impecunious artists. Percy Shelley and Horace became friends after competing in a sonnet-writing contest (which Shelley won by producing "Ozymandias"). Before leaving for Italy, the poet entrusted his financial affairs to Horace, of whom he said, "Is it not odd that the only truly generous person I ever knew who had money enough to be generous with should be a stock-broker? He writes poetry and pastoral dramas and yet knows how to make money, and does make it, and is still generous." The binding here was produced by the Guild of Women Binders, established by bookseller Frank Karslake in 1898 to give an organizational identity to a group of women already at work binding books in various parts of Britain, often in their own homes. Karslake first became interested in women binders when he visited the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earl's Court in 1897, held to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. He was impressed with a number of bookbindings at the Jubilee exhibit, prominent among them being those of Mrs. Annie MacDonald of Edinburgh, and he invited the women to exhibit their work in his shop at 61 Charing Cross Road. The Guild was formed soon thereafter, and operated until 1904. As Tidcombe notes, "because the women were generally unaware of the long history of traditional bookbinding design, they produced designs that were freer and less stereotyped than those of men in the trade." Our binding is more restrained that other Guild works, but the spine lettering, which juxtaposes curves and sharp angles, stands out as a distinctive feature..

London and Edinburgh: Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson and Co, 1889. No. 101 OF 780 COPIES, extended to two volumes and extra-illustrated with portraits, views, etc. by John C. Runkle. 292 x 191 mm. (11 1/2 x 7 1/2"). Two volumes. Notes by Sir Walter Scott. VERY FINE CONTEMPORARY SCARLET MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, BY MARIUS MICHEL (stamp-signed on front doublures), covers featuring concentric French fillet panels with intricate cornerpieces between them, raised bands, gilt-ruled spine compartments with elegant foliate curls and complex central lozenge composed of several fleurons, FOREST GREEN MOROCCO DOUBLURES with large central panel formed by lobed French fillets, gilt-tooled inner and outer cornerpieces and sidepieces, gilt-decorated turn-ins, marbled endpapers. With 33 etchings (20 as head- or tailpieces, 13 as plates), as issued, by L. Boisson from original compositions by C. Delort, along WITH 167 ENGRAVED EXTRA-ILLUSTRATIONS, for a total of 200 images. A Large Paper Copy. ◆Two joints showing minor wear, other trivial external signs of use, vague spotting of no consequence in the text, inserted plates occasionally with minor foxing, but an especially attractive set in otherwise fine condition, the text clean and fresh, the margins vast, and the bindings lustrous. Hamilton's gossipy account of life at court, a book of persistent interest since its original appearance in 1714, is offered here in a copy of special note for its handsomely printed text, its luxury format, its added illustrations, and particularly its beautiful bindings. Philibert, Comte de Grammont, was a libertine and gambler who resided at the courts of Louis XIV of France (from which he was banished) and Charles II of England. His memoirs, written in an entertaining and ironic style, were either dictated to, or composed by, his brother-in-law, Anthony Hamilton (1646? - 1720). Although historically unreliable, they paint a vivid portrait of the character and scandals of the court, as seen by someone in the midst of its history. The book is an appropriate text to be used as a vehicle for extra-illustration, given the fact that the text records an insider's history of the courts of Louis XIV and Charles II, royal households which encompassed a great many important and colorful characters. Jean Marius Michel (also called Marius Michel the elder, 1821-90) produced distinguished work in the prevailing historical style for two decades, beginning in Paris in 1849. He worked at first by himself, then later with his son, Henri François Marius Michel (1846-1923), and he published important books on the history of binding as well. The family workshop came to even greater prominence when the son began producing bindings in a completely new and original style. The present binding is in the classical mode of Marius Michel the elder, but may well have been produced by his son; given the date of publication, the elder would have had to create this binding in the final year of his life. Whoever performed the work, it is characterized, like other bindings from the firm, by a remarkable elegance of design as well as the highest level of technical execution..

The copy offered here was once owned by his brother Conrad (1724 - 1795) and then passed to the Sixt family whose last owner (Friedrich Sixt) recorded the descent of the book through the family on the free front endpaper.

In the context of Stewart's work, this involves the study of how an electrical stimulus affects the voltage difference across the nerve membrane, causing the membrane to change from a polarized state (negative inside, positive outside) to a depolarized state and then back to a polarized state (repolarization).

Description
London: Richard Bentley, 1838 Three volumes. Illustrated with twenty-four steel-engraved plates by George Cruikshank. First edition, mixed issue, with many first issue points to the text, early "Boz" on the title pages, and the later "Church" plate in Volume III. Lacking half-titles and advertisements. Finely bound in late 19th century half black morocco, marbled paper-covered boards, five raised bands to spines, lettered, decorated and ruled in gilt, and marbled endpapers. Near fine, with some mild flaking to spine ends and joints, some corners lightly bumped, light rubbing to boards, and some very light soiling and spotting internally. Overall, a beautiful, tight and square set of one of Dickens' most beloved works. Housed in a navy slipcase. Smith I, 4. Published shortly after the enactment of the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, which mandated that state poor relief would only be given to workhouse residents, Oliver Twist served as a vehicle for Dickens' criticism of the effects of poverty left unabated. Specifically, this social novel tells the story of poor, orphaned Oliver Twist who is drawn into the dark worlds of child labor, petty crime, and life in the London slums. The book features some of Dickens' most colorful characters, including Fagin, the Artful Dodger, Bill Sykes, and Nancy. The book has received many film adaptations over the years, including David Lean's classic 1948 version starring John Davies as Twist and Alec Guinness as Fagin, and the 1968 musical film Oliver!, which won six Academy Awards and was itself adapted from the same-titled 1960 Tony Award-winning musical. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Description
Original black and white photo of Henry Miller inside, looking out of the top of a Dutch door. On verso signed, inscribed and dated by the writer, "For Stefan... from Henry Miller Big Sur 8/49." A Typed Letter Signed, to "Dear Friend," one page of browned paper with two repairs to vertical folds and three unrepaired tears, 4to, n.p. (Big Sur), n.d. Miller apologizes to his correspondent that he is no longer able to respond to mail about his books as he has no time to actually write these books any more. "I regret that I am unable to answer your letter myself... for years the letters from readers of my books were a sustaining note in my life... Of late... has become a burden...." He specifies, by writing about the book he is working on. "Since 1942, due to the pressures of other work, I have... put off the consummation of the one book which means more to me than any I have written thus far - THE ROSY CRUCIFIXION. I want the luxury of being able to concentrate on this work...." The Rosy Crucifixion consisted of three works, Sexus (1949), Plexus (1953) and Nexus (1959) and were all three published together by Grove Press in 1965. Miller introduces his friend, Emil White who would be answering letters for him. "Emil White, who has volunteered to answer my mail, is a close friend who lives nearby... He is doing this without compensation... Be kind to him!" Signed in full, with Emil's address in Big Sur below. Emil White, (1926-99) artist and close friend of Henry Miller. The Autograph Letter Signed by Emil White, on Henry Miller personal Big Sur stationery with trapezoidal photo illustration of Miller at head, is to a bookseller named Mr. Lindmark, Sept. 28, 1945. White writes on behalf of Henry Miller who had entrusted his friend, Emil White, to act as his secretary. "Enclosed is a picture of Henry Miller, the only one he has at this time. Mr. Miller regrets he cannot do the "blurb" for your book store... As for B. Traven, he knows... little about him.... If you think you can get by the customs authorities, you may try to import his earlier books from... Obelisk Press... Paris...." In a P.S., written along the side margins, "Can you obtain for Mr. Miller the following books at reasonable prices: Knut Hamsun "Mysteries"; Jean Giono - "Joy of Man's Desiring" and Duhamel...." White's letter is related in spirit but unrelated in date and inscription to MIller's signed photograph. Condition: photograph shows some cracking in upper left corner but overall in good condition as is White's ALS, but Miller's TLS on brown paper has been backed on Mulberry paper due to a full tear across a horizontal fold and splits along vertical folds.

Naples: Raymond, 1769. Modern boards. Old stamps « BJ » on the title, old pen trials on the title verso. Title page repaired, some marginal dampstaining. You’ve heard of the perpetual calendar, now get ready for the perpetual fortune teller. Providing insights for every year from 1269 to 2024, it is based on a supposed 28-year orbit of the sun, so that the fortunes repeat every 28 years. Thus, the predictions for the years 1800, 1828, 1856, and 1884 are the same. According to the text, this year portends a great war of Christian leaders, the discovery of treason, an important naval battle, and the crowning of a grand prince. This edition not in Caillet.

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good +. Octavo [24 cm] Full rust colored cloth with paper labels on the front board and spine, and the publisher's black top stain. Spine rolled. Extremities lightly bumped and faintly soiled. In the uncommon dust jacket, which is a bit toned - particularly at spine - and has a handful of short, closed tears and small losses. Pencil notation on front flap of dust jacket. The author and illustrator's third wordless novel explores the social and economic realities of the Great Depression. Preceded by the artist's groundbreaking first two novels: Gods' Man (1929) and Madman's Drum (1930). In this work, Ward used a a two color system - rust colored for the thoughts of the protagonist, and black for the crumbling world around him. Ward produced six wordless novels between 1929 and 1937, and although Ward continued to be an illustrator in high demand for the rest of his life, these early works find him at the absolute height of his creative and artistic powers.

104 pp. gay and lesbian community directory, illus. 4to. Very good. Illus. stiff wraps. [1752] From Cordova's introduction: "Just a short ten years ago, the list of LA's lesbian and gay organizations could be squeezed onto a 3 x 5 file card. The first (and only) Metropolitan Community Church, the Gay Community Services Center, The Advocate newspaper, the Daughters of Bilitis Lesbian Center, One inc., and the Crenshaw Women's Center were the only numbers you could dial and expect a warm response. The 1982 Community Yellow Pages lists 161 groups, centers, and organizations which serve our needs from camping to counseling, from the economic to the educational. To me this book is about love and courage. It is a statement about love and belonging to our particular society, and a statement of courage and strength in our commitment to make Change." Scarce.
