Description
London: MacMillan, 1885. FOURTH EDITION. With 6 plates and 119 text figures. Publisher’s decorated cloth, a bit worn on joints; some minor spotting, otherwise a very good copy from the library of Owen Gingerich with his bookplate. A 1-page letter from the author to The Rev. J. Summers dated February 25, 1888 is pasted onto the front paste-down. Fourth edition revised and considerably enlarged by the author of a valuable series of lectures detailing the development of the science of spectroscopy, the uses of the spectrum analytical method in the identification of particular elements, and its application to solar and stellar chemistry. Roscoe (1833-1915) was recognized as one of the leading chemists and technical educators of his time. His own important research focused on the rare metal vanadium, and he was the first to prepare this element in a pure form. Bolton, p. 784; DSB, XI, pp. 536-38.
