Zu München, sechzehenhundert und dreyzehenden Jahr/ den zwölfften Novembris Celebriert und gehalten. 8 pp. text and 6 double-page etched plates. Augspurg: Wilhelm Peter Zimmermann, 1614. Small folio, 305 x 195 mm., bound in contemporary mottled calf, tan morocco spine label, spine compartments gilt, preserved in a half morocco folding box. An early seventeenth century sammelband of works on perspective and architecture including a first edition of a comprehensive work on perspective by Lucas Brunn (d. 1640). In the tradition of Albrecht Dürer, Wentzel Jamnitzer, Levinus Hulsius and particularly Hans Lencker the Elder, Brunn unfolds a system for measuring and accurately representing lines, areas and volumes in various perspectival positions, and discusses an instrument of his own invention designed to achieve this. Included amongst the plates are two diagrams of Brunn's perspectival instrument and a great number of images using blocked Roman letterforms as models- choosing the ten letters contained in the name of his patron, Johannes Georgius, duke of Saxony, viz. I, O, H, A, N, E, S, G, R, V. Perhaps the most spectacular image is the elongated "anamorphic" human skull in the manner of Holbein's 1533 painting of "The French Ambassadors" which appears on plate 24. The sammelband also includes a beautifully printed De Bry edition of Jacques Perret's Architectura et Perspectiva. A remarkable book, which is comprised of plates and text dealing with imaginary fortifications and city plans. The most extraordinary aspect of the engravings centers on the surreal quality of the fortifications and the visionary designs of the buildings, including one thirteen-story edifice, complete with rooftop sculptures, urns and fountains, which prefigures the modern urban skyscraper. The final book (the fête book) lacks the title, dedication and plates 6-11. Binding a bit rubbed, a few marginal light stains, overall an appealing copy. For Perret, OCLC lists only the Art Institute of Chicago, Universities of Minnesota and Pennsylvania in the U.S., and for Brunn it lists 9 copies. Only NYPL for the fête book. There are no listings in OCLC for the Solis, although there is a set at the British Museum, V&A and Metropolitan Museum. PROVENANCE: Thomas Vroom with his bookplate on the front pastedown.

Description
1746. SCHEYB, Franz Christof von. Theresiade, ein Ehren-Gedicht. Two parts in one volume. [369] pp. Engraved allegorical portrait frontispiece, engraved title-page vignette, engraved dedication leaf, 13 historiated engraved initials, and 29 engraved vignettes by Salomon Kleiner after his own designs and those of Preissler and Buch. Each leaf is enclosed by a narrow ornamental woodcut border. 4to., 300 x 214 mm, full contemporary speckled calf. Vienna: Joh. Jacob Jahn, 1746. First Edition of one of the high spots of German Baroque book production. "In his Theresiade, Scheyb created the last great Baroque encomium, very impressive and luxuriously executed in twelve books comprising nearly eight thousand lines ...in all, a laudatory poem which entangles its subject in a net of allegory" (Faber du Faur). In addition to the fine frontispiece portrait of the Empress, the work contains numerous vignettes by Kleiner. The latter have been highly praised by Lanckoronska for their extraordinary refinement and miniature-like precision. She notes also that the contrast between the woodcut technique employed for the frames of each leaf and the engraved decorations creates an unusual and impressive visual effect. Head of spine restored, otherwise in excellent condition. Faber du Faur 1721. Lanckoronska-Oehler I, 29. Goedecke III, 376, 115. Seebass-Edelmann 874.

Quarto (11¼" x 9") bound modern quarter calf-backed marbled boards, raised bands on spine with gilt design, black title label with gilt lettering over marbled boards. In 1776 he joined HMS Discovery as master's mate and served on the third Pacific voyage of James Cook. During the expedition, in August 1779, he was transferred to the HMS Resolution. On Cook's third voyage, furs obtained in present-day British Columbia and Alaska sold for good prices when the expedition called at Macao. In 1785 Richard Cadman Etches and partners, including Portlock and George Dixon formed a partnership, commonly called the King George's Sound Company, to develop the fur trade. Dixon had also served on Resolution in the Pacific Ocean under Cook. In September 1785 Portlock and Dixon sailed from England. Portlock was in command of the larger vessel, the 320-ton King George, with a crew of 59. Dixon's was in command of the 200-ton Queen Charlotte, with a crew of 33. Dixon and Portlock sailed together for most of their three-year voyage. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean, reaching the Falkland Islands in January 1786, and transited Cape Horn to enter the Pacific Ocean. They reached the Hawaiian islands on 24 May and anchored in Kealakekua Bay (where Cook had been killed in 1779), but did not go ashore. They took on fresh food at other Hawaiian islands and proceeded on to what is now Alaska. After two years of plying the waters, Portlock and Dixon departed North America, reaching Macao in November 1788. On their return Portlock and Dixon published an account of the voyage, based in part on letters written by William Beresford, the trader on the expedition.Condition:Portrait frontispiece lacking. Cino Del Duca Film. No binding. Near Fine. Rome: Cino Del Duca Film, 1961. Vintage original 55 x 78" (140 x 200 cm) Italian four panel poster, style E. Artwork by Anna Salvatore. On linen, a long tear in area of the woman's hair and a small hole in white background at bottom right were skilfully conserved. Poster was overall in really nice condition to begin with. Overall near fine or better. Director Pier Paolo Pasolini's first feature film. Franco Citti, a non-actor who was working as a day laborer at the time, was cast because Pasolini appreciated his distinctly Roman features. In the neorealist tradition, the vast majority of the cast were also non-professional actors for whom this was their first and/or only film role. One of the few professional actors was Adriana Asti, who played a prostitute and later became a Pasolini regular. It follows the life of Vittorio "Accattone" Cataldi, a pimp living on the outskirts of Rome. The film premiered at the 22nd Venice International Film Festival, where it met with controversy over its provocative content and was later withdrawn from general release over censorship, drawing condemnation from Pasolini and others. It was nonetheless critically acclaimed and remains one of the late classics of the Italian neorealist tradition. (Wikipedia)

The telexes were sent from various AP offices: London, Moscow, Stockholm, New York, and others, and contain reports on events during the last few days of the European campaign of World War II., specifically April 28–29, 1945. Of primary interest are the accounts of Himmler's attempts to negotiate a separate surrenders with the USA and Britain under the aegis of the Swedish Count Bernadotte highlighting a number of pertinent issues elucidating the situation: a) the initial refusal of the American government to comment on the offer, and its subsequent insistence on an unconditional surrender, including Russia. b) Himmler's offer of Jewish lives in trade and his claim that surrender would cause Hitler's nervous collapse and death. c) a report claiming Hitler having a cerebral hemorrhage d) detailed report describing Russian advances in and around Berlin, including the Chancellery. e) a lengthy narrative on massive German surrenders, the approach upon the Reichstag, etc. f) a report claiming that the "Nazi overlords" were being led in battle personally by Hitler himself. Very good. Wrappers chipped, a couple short tears, modern pink coloring to a couple of the images.
Description
Lowell, Massachusetts: C.I. Hood & Co, 1891. Very good. Wrappers chipped, a couple short tears, modern pink coloring to a couple of the images.. Featuring an illustration of a pretty young lady on the front, "Lovely Woman" was published as a marketing tool by the makers of Hood's Sarsaparilla, targeting women and homemakers in search of family medicines and remedies. Promotes Hood products for curing everything from "nervousness" in women to dyspepsia, alongside charming stories, illustrations, and anecdotes. Sentimentality abounds, such as in this section on page 5 titled "Very Heavy": "Of all heavy bodies, the heaviest is that of the woman we have ceased to love. N.B. Be sure to get Hood's Sarsaparilla." (p.7). Interesting from a gender studies point of view, as well as for those interesting in the history of advertising. Note the advert for the upcoming 1891 Hood calendar on the lower wrapper. Single vol. (6" by 5.25"), pp. 16, original illus. wrps.
