Description
London: Bloomsbury, 1997 First paperback edition, first printing (number line 10 to 1), with no space between "Taylor" and "1997" on the seventh line of the copyright page, and "1 wand" printed twice in the list below "Other Equipment" on p. 53. According to Errington, "Both hardback (A1(a)) and paperback (A1(aa)) were published on the same date and neither has bibliographical priority." One of 5,150 copies. Publisher's pictorial wrappers illustrated by Thomas Taylor, with yellow, black, and white lettering, and young wizard to rear panel. Very good, with bright and clean wrappers, light wear to spine ends, minimal edgewear, a small puncture to rear wrapper ("£4.99" mostly effaced), light creases to some pages, tiny loss to half-title page and p. 53 (text unaffected), and a closed tear and light yellow staining to p. 121. Overall, a superb copy of the first Harry Potter book. Housed in a custom red clamshell box. Errington A1(aa). First published in 1997, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter heptalogy. It introduces both Harry and readers alike to the secret, magical world of witches and wizards in Great Britain. It also sets the stage for the six subsequent novels by familiarizing readers with the villainous Lord Voldemort and how his and Harry's fates are inevitably intertwined. Although often regarded as a children's novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone topped adult reading charts in the UK, and in the United States, where it was published under the alternate title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Notably, the first printing of this book in hardcover format is exceedingly rare; only 500 copies were printed, of which about 300 ended up in libraries. Despite its small print run, the book was an immediate success, and went through dozens of print runs within the first few years after publication. . First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Very Good.

Derby: Henry Mozley and Son, 1830 Second British edition. There was also a Boston edition published in 1829 by Munroe and Francis. All editions are scarce. OCLC locates two copies of the present edition (British Library; Heinz Historical Center in Pennsylvania) and no copies of either the first British edition or the Boston edition.. Original drab boards, blue cloth spine, and paper spine label. . Octavo. With engraved frontisportrait. Some dampstaining to boards and rubbing to label. Contemporary pencil signature, plus ink signature, dated 1869, to front flyleaf. Light foxing to front and back matter. Some dust soiling and toning to leaves. A very good, tight copy of a scarce work. The present work is a social history narrated by a woman mourning the death of her sister, Sophy, "a delicate and high-minded female, exposed early in life to all the dangers of the world, yet threading all its intricate mazes with a firm step and upright demeanor," (p. 7). The narrator tells Sophy's life story to her children as an instructive view into the social roles of women and the morality expected of them. The work is a follow-up to the children's book Little Sophy (ca. 1827).
