Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was a world-renowned author, poet, civil rights activist and performer. Angelou published seven autobiographies, several poetry collections, and three essay books. Her 1971 volume Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
