Description
1811. [Watanabe Nangaku 渡辺南岳 & Kawamura Bumpō, 河村文鳳 artists. (Nangaku Bumpō) Kaidō Sōga (南丘文鳳) 街道双画. 全 Kawachiya Kihei and Yoshidaya Shimbei (of Osaka and Kyoto respectively.) Bunka 8 [1811] 26.2 x 17.9 cm. There is a preface by Bunya Shigetaka. Buff covers blindstamped with a geometric pattern of squares and octagons. Printed paper title label. Our copy of this bibliographically complex work appears to resemble most closely the copy at Ryerson 385 (one of Mitchell's "B" examples). It would appear that the two volume edition (Mitchell's "A") with a poetry volume is of extraordinary rarity. (The KSSM only lists three examples and Mitchell lists his own and one other - a variant). What is clear in the midst of all the detail is that the impressions of this copy are fresh and beautiful. The juxtaposition of Nangaku and Bumpo^ designs is instructive and interesting. There is a bit of soiling and staining to the covers, a very few internal spots and thumbing and a very mild internal waterstain - but overall still a pleasing copy of this uncommon and important book.

Many of the pieces also include manuscript notes and/or signatures, including those of W.C. Marmon, President of Marmon Co., and J.J. Turner, President of The Indianapolis Union Railway Co. The Marmon factory was acquired by Eli Lilly & Company in 1946 and the building remains in use to this day by Lilly. Marmon is best known for the Marmon "Wasp", which Ray Harroun drove to victory in the first ever Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1911. Overall condition Very Good or better. Description
Washington DC: GPO, 1867 - 1891. Unknown. A standard three quarter roan and black cloth binding. . Very good; covers present but detached.. 4to, a stencil duplication of typescripts interspersed with extracted portions of the printed reports that have been mounted or bound in chronological sequence containing substantial revisions in each year marked on the printed reports; appx. 100 pages. An excellent run of the engineering reports for the improvement of Baltimore Harbor and the Patapsco River in the late nineteenth century. Work on this project was intermittent because of the lack of federal funding. The text provides a vivid account of the work of the Army Corps of Engineers (as well as a mind numbing level of detail) throughout the last decades of the nineteenth century. There is an occasional text map in the body of the reports. The editorial changes and alteration of tables and report information noted throughout are extensive. This copy was the personal property of A H Hutton, engineer and member of the Baltimore Harbor Board. He has signed it on the first leaf of text.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1905. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 0x0x0. Wenzell, A.B. First edition, first state (no ads following text). Lacks scarce jacket. Spine faded, boards rubbed with faint ring stain on front, hinges weakening, front free endpaper absent. 1905 Hard Cover. 532, [6] pp. 8vo. Red cloth, gilt titles and top edge. The popular second novel by the author who later became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize (1921). Originally serialized in Scribner's Magazine, its success was described by Charles Scribner as 'the most rapid sale of any book ever published by Scribner' (Benstock, A Critical History of The House of Mirth). This catapulted Wharton's career as a writer, and her works influenced authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sinclair Lewis. "A literary sensation when it was published by Scribners in 1905, The House of Mirth quickly established Edith Wharton as the most important American woman of letters in the twentieth century. The first American novel to provide a devastatingly accurate portrait of New York's aristocracy, it is the story of the beautiful and beguiling Lily Bart and her ill-fated attempt to rise to the heights of a heartless society in which, ultimately, she has no part. From the staid conventionality of Old New York to the forced conviviality of the French Riviera, from the drawing room of Gus Trenor's Bellomont to the dreary resort of a downtown boardinghouse, Wharton created her "first full-scale survey," as her biographer R.W.B. Lewis put it, "of the comedie humaine, American style." A brilliantly satiric yet sensitive exploration of manners and morality, The House of Mirth marked Wharton's transformation from an amateur into a professional writer and figures among her most important works.

Illustrated dust jacket. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap. "The extraordinary images and powerful essays of this volume capture the beauty of Little Cottonwood Canyon, critical habitat for flora and fauna and a precious mountain refuge from urban living in nearby Salt Lake City. For over fifty years, this place has been the subject of environmental conflict; the latest danger is a proposal to construct the world's longest gondola, with 250-foot towers... A chorus of concerned writers and superb photographers celebrates the immeasurable value of Little Cottonwood, surely inspiring citizens to fight for its protection.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1957. First printing (stated). Near fine in very good plus jacket.. First edition of Morley (Brant)'s adolescent diary in Bishop's translation from the Portuguese. Alice Deyrell Caldeira Brant began keeping diaries in 1893, the 12-year-old daughter of a diamond miner in the small Brazilian town of Diamantina; their first publication (in Brazil in 1942) was arranged by her husband and edited to omit any and all reference to their meeting and courtship. At the time of Bishop's English translation, the author was 76, happy to meet the poet and expand on her old stories, living proof that "it really happened; everything did take place, day by day, minute by minute, once and only once, just the way Helena says it did" (Bishop). 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original quarter yellow cloth with gray-green decorative boards. In original unclipped ($4.75) first-state dust jacket by Harry Ford. Yellow topstain. Photographic endpapers. 281, [1] pages. Description
Caldwell, Idaho: The Caxton Printers, Ltd., 1966. Signed and inscribed by the Author. Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), xix, 333 pp. Good, with cello tape to endpapers; in a like, mylar protected dust jacket. Photographs gladly provided upon request. From dust jacket: The Civl War was, in a sense, a “musical war.” During the first year alone, an estimated two thousand musical compositions were produced, and the outpouring continued so that by the end of the conflict more music had been created, played, and sung, perhaps, than during all our other wars combined. Abraham Lincoln -- rail-splitter, circuit lawyer, preserver of the Union and emancipator of the slaves -- was no musician. Yet he was extremely fond of music and as President he probably heard more music than any other occupant of the White House. He heard the old patriotic tunes and the new songs of the Civil War period. He listened to bands, choruses, and soloists. He came to know the songs and the singers, the bands and their leaders. He heard exuberant serenaders outside the White House and quiet singers within; he heard noisy bands in the streets of Washington and he listened to their soft strains at evening in many of the “hundred circling camps.” Here, as told by Kenneth A. Bernard, is an account of the music of the era and of Lilncoln’s relationship to it. Against a background of specific events, Professor Bernard shows how the music of the war was inspired, how it inspired and affected the soldiers and the folk back home, and, finally, how it inspired and affected Lincoln himself... Lincoln and the Music of the Civil War presents a fresh approach to an understanding and appreciation of the emotional side of the great conflict. No President, before or since, has been sung to and played to as much as was Lincoln. No President enjoyed the sound and sentiment of music any more than did Lincoln.
