Therefore Ogilby translated the original work from Dutch into English and was also the illustrator. . *** CONTROVERSIAL AUTHORSHIP: Since the date of publication in 1671, there has been some confusion about the exact author, because this information was omitted from the title page. . Arnoldus MONTANUS [1625?-1683], is cited on the title page as the person who "Collected out of their several writings and journals." In today's palance he becomes the 'compiler & editor,' according to the AACR [Anglo-American Cataloging Rules], which we learned in Library School. . This title was first published in Dutch, by the true author: Olfert DAPPER [ca.1635-1690], under the title: "GEDENKWAERDIG BEDRYF DER NEDERLANDSCHE OOST-INDISCHE MAETSCHAPPYE OP DE KUSTE EN IN HET KEIZERRIJK VAN TAISING OF SINA," Amsterdam, 1670, published by Jacob van Meurs. . *** BINDING: This folio is 27 x 42 cm. There is some of the usual 'toning' to some plates including the frontispiece, some foxing to the title-page, discoloration here and there, complete with all plates and maps as issued. . *** CONDITION: This book is nearly 350 years old, as can be expected with any work of this age, there are always the normal and usual minor scuffing, minor wear to the corners & edges. The work was professionally re-backed perhaps more than a 100 years ago, preserving the original spine. The book is firmly bound and very solid. There are a couple of mended page corners and a few tiny closed tears which were expertly ended in the distant past. The work is clean, solid and firm. By and large an excellent copy of a very rare book. . *** APPROPRIATE SHIPPING COSTS: This is a large, heavy and valuable work. An autograph letter signed Wm Wordsworth addressed to Mr. Wakefield of the Rock Insurance Company in Blackfriars: I hope you will not think it is presuming too much upon a slight acquaintance if, on account of the prolonged absence of the Friend in Town who used to transact my business, I apply to you respecting the Shares in the Rock Insurance Company. Perhaps you will recollect that you thought it might be expedient to sell out about the commencement of this year, rather than wait for the Bonus to take effect in Spring Another Gent. of the Office remember was of the same opinion. I have myself no means of learning whether shares are on the rise or decline, but if they continue as high as 4-16, unless you are persuaded that they are likely to rise I should be glad to sell out & as to the fact of the probability, I should be well pleased to be guided by your judgment. Mrs. Palmer 12 Castle Alley, Royal Exchange was the Agent employed in this Affair, but he is unknown to me will you therefore be so kind as to inform me of the present & probably state of Prices adding a direction how I am to proceed if I determine upon selling. Whenever you revisit this County, I hope you will arrange your time so that I may have the pleasure of showing you the beauties of the Neighborhood. Mr. Friend who I see if the Actuary of your Society is an old, tho not intimate Acquaintance of mine I should be glad if you happen to see him to present him with my good wishes. Description
1908. First Edition. DU BOIS, W. E. Burghardt, ed. The Negro American Family. Atlanta, Georgia: Atlanta University Press, 1908 (i.e. 1909). Octavo, original printed gray self-wrappers; pp. 156. $1600.First edition of a pivotal work edited by Du Bois in the landmark Atlanta University Publication Series directed by him, fundamental to his creation of ""the first American school of sociology,"" with 16 pages of illustrations, rare in original wrappers.Du Bois sought ""virtually every possible solution to the problem of 20th-century racism… he was possessed of a principled impatience with what he saw as the egregious failings of American democracy"" (Blight, W.E.B. Du Bois, 713). On the night he died, in exile in Ghana, 250,000 Americans were gathering at the Lincoln Memorial in the 1963 March on Washington. The next day a deep silence fell over the crowd when Roy Wilkins announced the death of Du Bois, declaring ""his was the voice calling you to gather here today in this cause."" When Du Bois arrived in Georgia to join the Atlanta University faculty, he already had been the first African American to earn a PhD from Harvard and ""completed a pioneering sociological investigation,"" in The Philadelphia Negro (1898). His years in Atlanta ""were, by his own admission, decisive ones… that placed him on the frontier of social science scholarship… although he was ignored by white Atlanta, his office on the university campus became the stopping-off point for the famous, influential, and merely curious"" as he ""organized a frontal assault on all efforts to deny African Americans first-class citizenship. In a real sense his tenure at Atlanta University was the final preparation for a career that ultimately touched several continents"" (Gatewood, W.E.B. Du Bois, 206-8).It was there that Du Bois created ""the first American school of sociology."" He edited the yearly Atlanta University Publications (1898-1909) and then co-edited four issues with Augustus Granville Dill (1910-13). When, in 1910, Du Bois saw ""that his presence on the faculty of Atlanta University negatively affected the school's philanthropic outreach efforts… [he] chose to resign from the faculty"" and became increasingly pivotal to the NAACP, which he cofounded. To historian Earl Wright II, Du Bois' legacy at Atlanta University also demonstrates how an ""all-Back institution located in the heart of the Jim Crow American south… pushed back against individual and institutional forces demanding that it conform to racist policies."" This very elusive first edition of Negro American Family ""arguably represents the first scholarly sociological study of the family in the U.S."" It notably draws on data from ""local investigations conducted by Atlanta University students… [and] existing slavery literature… some of the slavery era data collected… were utilized to assess the structure and organization of African tribes prior to European contact"" (First American School of Sociology, 81-89, 51, 49). In this momentous series, ""Du Bois created sociological and historical works of lasting significance… [that] set wholly new standards for the sociological study of Black Americans"" (New York Times). First edition: Atlanta University Publications, No. 13. Title page imprint: ""1908; ""Copyright, 1909, by Atlanta University"" on copyright page. Containing 16 pages of illustrations, numerous in-text diagrams, graphs and charts. Partington 2338. Largely due to rarity, Blockson cites only a later reprint (Blockson 3451). Not in Work. Text pristine, light expert restoration to fragile original wrappers, primarily to spine. A very elusive near-fine copy.

New York: Max. N. Maisel, 1911. First edition; 5 x 7 1/4; pp. [3], 4-159, [1]; bound in black cloth over boards; private paper label to spine; hinges weak; spotting mostly to corners and margins of pages; piece of old tape to index page; overall in good condition. A compilation of Russian "songs of freedom" and revolutionary poems by various authors. Some of the works included are an early printings of Razrushennyi Mol' of Grigorii Gershuni (a Russian revolutionary and a founder of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party) and Maxim Gorky's "Piesnia o Bureviestnikie" (The Song of the Stormy Petrel). Undoubtedly, though, one of the most interesting poems is "Fedorushka" by Tolstoy. In truth, the poem was written by Russian poet Mikhail Rozengeim in 1880 for whose poetry the literary term "liberal accusation" was coined. Apparently, Fedorushka was erroneously attributed to Tolstoy, whom, in fact, did not like the poem and expressed great displeasure with the incorrect attribution. The mistake was most probably made by the publisher - Max N. Maisel, who was a bookseller and publisher on New York's Lower East Side in the late 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. His shop was said to had been frequented by many political and cultural radicals. Only e-book copies of the first edition listed in OCLC.

Description
N.P., 1946. Good. 27½” x 41”. Good: splits at old folds repaired with tape on verso; large chip to upper left corner; light dust soiling and a couple of small stains. This is a poster promoting several important Black entertainers that almost certainly relates to a 1946 short film, Stars on Parade, as each person named appeared in the film. Phil Moore was a jazz pianist and bandleader who supported stars such as Frank Sinatra and Lena Horne, and he arranged big-band music for Tommy Dorsey. He also worked on scores for over 30 other films but rarely received a writing credit. Eddie South was a popular jazz violinist and Francine Everett was known for her appearances in this, as well as other, race films. Lucille “Lou” Swarz was an accomplished performer who performed monologues in one-woman shows from the 1930s to the 1950s. She taught theater and beauty at Douglass University, wrote a sports column for the New York Age and had her own radio show. Likely unique.

London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Designed in England, Printed in Germany, [n.d., ca. 1895]. First printing? The present item was probably part of the Panorama Toy Booklets series published by Raphael Tuck & Sons. The title-page indicates that it is "No. 25." A set of twelve of the Panorama Toy Booklets were published in a box set as the Youngsters Library, though The Three Kittens was not included in that set. . Bound in accordion format. Joints have been reinforced on verso, which forces the item to fold into only three sections (rather than six). . 6 panels, each 3 in. by 4 in. Folds out to 3 in. by 17 in. Printed on one side only. . Each panel with a different die-cut embossed chromolithograph plate showing three kittens losing their pairs of mittens, being chastised by their mother, finding the mittens, and having pie. Some light soiling and a bit of faint toning to verso, but overall a good, very bright and clean copy of a rare item. OCLC lists no other copies matching the exact description of this item. Raphael Tuck & Sons also printed The Three Kittens, sometimes titled as The Three Little Kittens, on linen and in sixteen-page books in boards, but there are no copies on OCLC in the panorama format.

35 letters, 119 pp., 3 envelopes, dated 7 June 1869 to February 1914. Two of the letters are typed, the remaining handwritten, several non James Sproat Brown letters written after his death, plus 12 ephemeral items. James Sproat Brown (1824-1878) James Sproat Brown was an American lawyer and Democratic politician from Wisconsin who served in the United States Congress. Brown was born on 1 February 1824 in Hampden, Penobscot County, Maine, the son of Judge Enoch Brown and his wife, the daughter of Judge Padelford of Taunton, Massachusetts. He attended public schools before moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1840. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1844. He was elected prosecuting attorney for Milwaukee County in 1846, and from 1848 to 1850 served as the first attorney general of Wisconsin. In 1861 Brown served as mayor of Milwaukee. From 1863 to 1865, Brown served one term in the United States House of Representatives during the 38th Congress representing Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District from March 4, 1863 to March 3, 1865. He ran for re-election in 1864 but was defeated by Halbert Eleazer Paine, a Civil War General from Wisconsin who served in congress from 1865 to 1871 before retiring. After his term in Congress, Brown moved to Europe in 1865 to recuperate his health. He returned to the United States in 1873, where he practiced law once again in Milwaukee. Brown died on 14 April 1878 in Chicago, Illinois, at age 54. He was buried at Milwaukee's Forest Home Cemetery. Brown was married first to Elizabeth Shephard (1835-1862). Elizabeth was the daughter of Clarence Shephard (1810-1892) and Mary Fowler (1816-1888). Brown and his wife Elizabeth had two sons, Clarence S. Brown (1856-1925) and James Padelford Brown (1859-1913). Clarence S. Brown became a lawyer and a member of the Wisconsin State Bar. He was a partner in the firm of Brazee & Brown, later with Hathaway, Brown, & Walker. He also had ties to the firm of Van Wyck, Brown and Schley. Clarence remained in Milwaukee until his death. He became District Attorney for Milwaukee for two years in 1890-1892. Clarence lived at 542 Van Buren Street in Milwaukee, Clarence's brother James P. Brown was one of the directors of the Milwaukee Associated Charities organization. He made a living as an insurance and real estate broker. James lived a couple of doors away from his brother Clarence at 571 Van Buren. James married Nora Lee (1859-1932) and they had at least one daughter named Dorothy. James also remained in Milwaukee. After the death of his first wife Elizabeth in 1862, James Sproat Brown married in 1865, a second time to Emily J. Stetson (1836-1918), of Bangor, Maine. All of the Browns (except the second wife) are buried at their family plot at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee. Description of Collection: In 1862 James Sproat Brown's wife died. By 1865, he had completed his term in Congress and remarried. He was also experiencing poor health and for these reasons, he traveled to Europe for a couple of years. The correspondence offered here written by Brown, his wife and younger son James, is from the time (1872-1873) that they spent in Europe, and also includes several letters after they returned to America. James P. Brown and his step mother also wrote from Europe, with letters to Clarence S. Brown, who is studying at school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Correspondence: 21 letters, 74 pp., of James Sproat Brown written to his son Clarence S. Brown, dated 7 June 1869 to 6 November 1873, two letters not dated, a couple of letters have tears at folds, or margins, one letter is in two pieces. The first letter written to Clarence is from Bangor, Maine, then one from New York City, followed by a letter on the steamer to Europe. Once in Europe he writes from Stuttgart, Dresden, Florence, Pisa, Milan, Frankfort, Hamburg, Gottingen, and London, as well as a couple of letters from Milwaukee upon his return to the United States after being abroad for about a year. 5 letters, 14 pp., of James P. Brown, to his brother Clarence S. Brown, dated 8 December 1872 to 28 January 1873, three letters not dated. Four of the letters written by James P. Brown to his brother Clarence are written Gottingen, Germany, the other from Chicago. His letters from Germany describe his trip to Hanover and to Gottingen, as well as a medieval armor collection he saw. 2 letters, 9 pp., of Mrs. E. S. Brown to her son Clarence S. Brown, not dated. One letter is written by Mrs. Brown from Paris, France, it is unclear where the other was written. 4 letters, 16 pp., of Clarence S. Brown, three to his father James S. Brown, and one to his brother James, dated 23 March 1873 to 13 January 1878, one letter not dated. Clarence informs his father about school, his expenses, etc., and the situation at home. He also writes to his brother about his life at school. He appears to be studying at Ann Arbor. 3 miscellaneous letters, 6 pp., dated 1895-1914, includes 1 letter of Anna Shephard to her cousin Jenny Shephard in New York City, not dated; 1 letter of Walston H. Brown & Bros., NYC to H.K. Southwick, Esq., concerning capital stock ownership in the California Company for power purposes in Stockton, California, dated 1895; 1 letter, typed, not signed, written to "Dorothy" from someone in Milwaukee. Dorothy is likely the daughter of James P. Brown. This is a three page typed letter that includes a detailed biography of James S. Brown on his younger days. Ephemera: 1 application (filled out) for "Proof of Eligibility for Membership" to The Colonial Dames of the State of Connecticut, dated 1923, for Dorothy Woodbridge Brown, daughter of James Padelford Brown. 1 application (partially completed) for membership to The Massachusetts Society of the Colonial Dames of America, for Mrs. Nora Lee Brown, wife of James Padelford Brown, not dated. 2 copies of marriage certificate for James S. Brown and Elizabeth Shephard, dated 1855 (copy dated 1922) 1 bond, 3 typed pp., for the executors of the estate of Mary Fowler Shephard, dated 1892. 1 genealogy, 13 mss pp. of genealogical records for Shephard-Fowler family, not dated. 1 property deed for Reformed Church of Lawyersville, to C. Sidney Shephard (Cemetery Deed Lot), dated 1908. 1 court argument, 6 typed pp., "The Central Trust Co. of NY vs. Toledo, Delphos & Burlington RR Co., et al, argued by Clarence Brown before A.J. Ricks, not dated c1885. 1 mss list, 2 pp., Ann Arbor Law Course, apparently taken by Clarence S. Brown, gives list of books, or lectures, not dated. 1 biography, 10 mss pp., in pencil, of James S. Brown, taken from "Memoirs of Milwaukee County" Western Historical Association, 1909, Vol, 1, Lt. Col. Jerome A. Watrons, Editor. 1 inventory & appraisal, 5 pp., of estate of James P. Brown, dated 1913/ 1 court judgment, 2 pp. of Gertrude Emily Shephard against Clarence H. Shephard, copy, filed 1873. Sample Quotations: "London, Sept 14, 1873 My dear child, We are at last in London in a land appearing so much nearer to us because English is spoken here. It seems odd that the cab drivers understood us, & it is not necessary to speak German or French to the chambermaid. Mama at first found it necessary to explain herself in German to the servants, but she has already found out that she can get along in English. My last was from Brussels, where we remained only two days. It boasts of being an imitation of Paris. Many of the first class are proved not to be able to speak their own language, Flemish, and speak pators, which they call French. They certainly have adopted French honesty, you can not trust any of them in the slightest thing. At our hotel from the landlord down to the lowest servant, they would lie...In fact the difference between them and the French they admire was a Frenchman would cheat you with greatest courtesy, but a Belgian using bad French would cheat you as rudely as a Flemish boar. My bill for two days at the principal hotel, Bellevue, was seventy six francs, and the bed bugs were thrown in. We have found such animals in no other hotel in Europe. We hastened to finish our purchases and sightseeing & went to Ostend, where we spent the night... At Ostend we embark for England. The trip on the North Sea is about 5 hours. The cabins fro Gentlemen and Ladies are separate. And the scene was such I had never before witnessed. Great overgrown men lay down [with] seasickness & screaming at the top of their voices. In our instance, two person were on the same lounge, which was long enough for two to lie down, both were screaming & writing; at length one of them changed his position, took his cushion, & laid it on the back of the other & laid down upon it with all the attendant consequences; the other for the first time stopped his screaming & remonstrated with the intruder..." "Milwaukee Nov 6th, 1873 My dear child, James & myself arrived safely at the Sherman Hotel at about 10 o'clock in the evening. James was tired and went directly to bed, but I preferred to learn a little about the Chicago election in which I did not succeed, as it took long to count the votes. In the morning I heard not only of the success of the anti Republican ticket, but of the complete overthrow of the old Republican bummers in Wisconsin & in New York. In all parts of the country there seems to have been an anti Republican movement. Even in Massachusetts, it was only the want of hope in the Democrats which prevented a grand defeat of the Republicans. I think Grant has had his warning..." Other letters detail his trips to Milan, Florence, and Pisa in Italy, number of letters relate his stay in several German cities. He appears to have stayed for some time in Dresden and Gottingen.

Description
London (Chelsea): William Watts, 1782. First Edition Thus. Framed and matted. Thomas Hearn. Engraved by William Watts. The print (visible) is 16 by 21 cm. The pictorial part of the print: 12.5 by 18 cm. The frame: 35 by 40 cm. The frame is a somewhat elaborate production, with an outer band of blond painted wood, which rises to a narrower, more tradition, gilt molded piece. The matting is an off-white fabric, with a narrow inner gilt piece. The print is browned and foxed, with the picture itself consequently darkened a bit. The hand-coloring was done with considerable care but the color application was done with a light touch (we are speaking of the amount of coloring, not the palette used). The result is muted, but pleasingly so, and we do think the color teases out some detail and actually adds to the illusion of dimensionality. The frame has some minor surface loss. We think the frame is worth preserving, and as to the outer part of it having an issue, albeit a minor one, we would recommend just painting over this part, and with gilt leaf it will look far better than this frame ever looked.
