Description
Salzburg: Residenz Verlag, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good Minus. A large inked inscription of Lehmann on FFEP reading, "For Donald with Affectionate regards. Lotte Lehmann 1969". The inscription takes up the entire page. We don't know who "Donald" was but we think quite likely it could have been the New York Times music critic, subsequent to 1969, Donal Henahan, who certainly had written glowingly of Ms. Lehmann. 8vo. 23 by 17 cm. 209, [2] pp. Lehmann was one of the great dramatic and interpretative sopranos of the early 20th century, known, among other things, as the great Marschallin of her day, and the foremost interpreter of Strauss. Among the roles she introduced was in fact the Composer in "Ariadne auf Naxos" and the Dyer's Wife in "Die Frau ohne Schatten". Her repetoire, though, was vast, and she had success in many of the major roles in Wagner, not to mention roles in French and Italian opera. After retiring from the Met she became a beloved opera coach, based in Santa Barbara, as well as a rather prolific author about opera and other things. DJ has edgewear, with small chips, rubbing, etc. Dampstain apparent on back of DJ. Cloth affected by the same fairly large dampstain which is though comparatively light. Interior clean, tight.
