Description
London: David Steel, 1810. "Steel's celebrated 'List of the Royal Navy'... was initially published irregularly, then appeared monthly... What began as an alphabetical list slowly turned into a complete gazetteer which included the Hon. East India Company, the name of naval and other officer connected with the sea service, their pay and pensions, etc." This book consists of the entire year's worth of monthly publications bound in two volumes. The type is minuscule, allowing for an incredible amount of information in a compact package. This set of the 1810 "List" lacks the 4-page insert in May and the final two pages of the month of June, 1810. All other months are present and complete at 90 pages each, providing an excellent snapshot of the Royal Navy on the eve of the War of 1812. See Witt 97 who notes, "The title for 1810 has been entirely recast. The publication takes on a much more 19th century look." Bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards with leather spine label. Two volumes. Two volumes, 15.5 cm. Twelve monthly lists, each 90 pp.
