Octavo. iv, [errata slip], 276 pp. Complete with hand-colored frontispiece, seven folding maps, and seven other plates. Contemporary calf, rebacked to style. Inner hinges cracked but holding. Twentieth-century bookplate to upper pastedown. Some foxing and offsetting from plates. One map with paper repair to verso. A Very Good copy. A cornerstone of any Polar collection, and the starting point for exploration to the Antarctic. Weddell achieved the furthest south record at that point (three degrees beyond Cook), resulting in his discovery of what would then become the Weddell Sea, as well as the Weddell seal. The voyage was so groundbreaking at the time, certain places such as the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf would not be rediscovered until nearly a century later. The expedition "visited and described the Cape Verde Islands, South Orkney Islands, South Shetland Islands, and South Georgia Islands, wintered in the Falkland Islands, and described Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, and Montevideo. During their southward sailing, they reached the lowest latitude as yet then recorded. This area explored now bears the name Weddell Sea" (Hill). Abbey Travel 609; Hill (1974) p. 322; Sabin 102431. Red cloth boards, with applied paper title labels to spine and front cover; dustwrapper; 452pp. Inscribed on half-title: "To Mr. George Schmitter with best wishes," signed, undated but apparently contemporary with publication. Another hand has added initials and a date of 1934 beneath the inscription; a later owner has added a commercial bookplate to the dedication leaf (facing copyright page). The book is a solid, Very Good copy, lightly dusted at board edges but still quite sound and attractive. The jacket is price-clipped, sunned and worn, with extensive clear tape adhesions to verso (most of these have been removed by a professional conservator, the remainder stabilized, with a few tears professionally mended but no restoration). Good only, but a truly scarce example. The very elusive first edition of Adamic's first book, a classic history of militant social movements in America and the equally militant methods used to suppress them, starting with the labor riots of 1877 and including the Haymarket Massacre, the Wobbly trials, the Homestead strike, the execution of Sacco & Vanzetti, etc. Adamic, a Slovenian immigrant to the U.S., would go on to publish a dozen or so works in his adopted language; as he states in his foreword to this work, he was "...not an active radical, nor a member of any labor union, but my sympathies are with labor; on the other hand, I do not habitually utter the word 'Capitalism' with a hiss..." Second and later printings abound, but In twenty-plus years of searching this is the first jacketed copy of the First Edition we have managed to get our hands on.

M.F.K. Fisher's A Cordiall Water is a short, idiosyncratic collection of folk cures and household remedies, framed by her characteristic wit and reflective prose. The book gathers traditional "receipts" - nostrums, cordials, poultices, and tonics - meant to assuage ailments in both humans and animals, from minor discomforts to more serious complaints. Fisher combines these recipes with anecdote, history, and skepticism, so the volume reads as much like an essayistic meditation on belief, superstition, and care as it does a manual of cures. Fisher later remarked that A Cordiall Water was among her favorite of her own works, in part because she wrote it while living in Aix-en-Provence and felt the prose had a special clarity born of thinking in two languages.
