Description
New York: Harper and Brothers, Publishers, 1862. First American Edition. 574pp. Octavo [24 cm] Publisher's blind stamped brown cloth with the title gilt stamped on the backstrip. Complete with all plates and both fold-outs. Better than very good. Gentle rubbing to boards. Former owner's name small in ink on front free endsheet and neatly gilt stamped at foot of backstrip. A nice copy of this classic travel narrative, of Burton's visit to Brigham Young's Salt Lake. This is the first edition of this outstanding western travel narrative. Already celebrated for his travels to the 'holy cities' of the Old World, Burton made a pilgrimage in 1860 to Great Salt Lake City, taking the overland stage from St. Joseph, and after a few weeks among the Mormons, going on to San Francisco via the Comstock. "The Mormons have been represented, and are generally believed to be, an intolerant race; I found the reverse far nearer the fact. The best proof of this is that there is hardly one anti-Mormon publication however untruthful, violent, or scandalous which I did not find in Gt. S. L. City." (p.249) "An outstanding narrative of Western travel published in London, 1861, (perhaps more often seen in the New York, 1862, edition) is Richard F. Burton's 'The City of the Saints and across the Rocky Mountains to California.' Already celebrated for his travels to the 'holy cities' of the Old World, Burton made a pilgrimage in 1860 to Great Salt Lake City, taking the overland stage from St. Joseph, and after a few weeks among the Mormons, going on to San Francisco via the Comstock." - Carl Wheat.
